Why is my iPhone5 battery draining so fast, worse than my iphone4?

My phone seems to be loosing battery really quickly. It came only slightly charged but I have since fully charged it and notice it drains much faster than my iPhone 4. Is anyone having similar issues? Frustrating!

iPhone 5, iOS 6

When mine was received had about 72% from the start. After a full night charge I was surprised that after very light use, FB, text, emails, no phone calls, all while home on wireless it was down to less than 20% in about 7 hours. I know my iPhone 4 did not drop this much. It would seem that Apple might have a bad batch of batteries.....last time this happned when I had a 3S I brought it in to Apple they hooked it up ran some diagnostic tests. Said the battery was not good, went to the back and got me a new iPhone. I am not worried. They stand behind their products.

Guys,

You gotta try this to solve it but I'm not too sure if it will work on yours.

Step 1 - Backup your iphone by using iCloud or iTunes.

Step 2 - Enter DFU mode
Step 3 - Restore from your backup whichever method you used with (both iCloud or iTunes).

This is what I've found on another topics in this apple forum.

Hope it will work out for all of you guys.

I doubt that would work if you included step 3 as you would simply restore any undefined errors and overwrite the DFU. I'd simply start 'as a new phone' and manually redo everything bit by bit to see if there's a culprit causing this massive drop.

I had this issue yesterday too and did a hard reset and charged from flat to 100% and it seems a little better, though in the past 1.5hrs of very light use and standby it did drop 20%. Ugh.

Hello all

My new iPhone went from 90% to 22% in 4 hours and it was used for 4g for around 5 minutes.

I also cannot FaceTime or text my son on his iphone5 but I can on any other phone.

Pretty disappointed all round.

I'll be asking for a refund if this is as good as the battery gets and you shouldn't have to turn anything off, my 4 had heaps of battery with everything running.

Gary. :(

The same is happening to me, i am pretty much charging it each night.

However, it all depends on the amount of Apps you have downloaded, even if you aren't using them at the current time, they can still drain your battery. i.e - check your web browser (Safari Page) click the bottom right picture of two squares, one behind the other, that will show how many pages you have open! Close them all because this is a running page and will be using up your battery. 🙂

It seems inconsistent. When setting up and restoring via my iCloud backup, the battery was literally draining before my eyes. The back of the phone got extremely hot. It went from 95% to 60% in about 25 minutes. This morning, with it being on charge all night, it went from 100% to 97% in about 8mins, but then stayed there. Last night I was using it with the TomTom UK satnav app in my car. On my old 3GS this would drain the battery fast, and the phone would be scorching afterwards. On the 5 it dropped about 3% in half an hour and was barely warm. I think it's the wifi circuits. When the phone was updating or being first used in the morning and checking emails etc the battery drains quickly. On 3G it's a lot less drain. Turning off lift to activate for Siri slowed down the drain quite a bit.

Basically, the wifi power management appears problematic at the moment. I'm now sending usage stats and diagnostic data to Apple - the only way this will get fixed is if it gets noticed by Apple and I think they'll be scrutinising iPhone 5 data closely over the next few weeks.

I too have noticed battery drain but don't think it's the iPhone 5 hardware. I believe it's something to do with iOS6. Prior to getting my iPhone 5, I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 6. I immediately noticed that my iPhone 4 battery was draining much quicker than it ever had before the iOS upgrade. Sure makes me suspect the iOS as the battery drain culprit.

I doubt it's just software problem because my iphone4 and new ipad both upgraded to iOS6 and got no battery problem. I actually also left iphone5 and 4 on together ON and iphone 4 dropped only 3% (100%->97%) but iphone 5 dropped 21% (100% ->79%), so it can't be wifi issue either. I do believe software problem could affect the battery as it somehow sent signal at background to keep checking stuff, etc and that's why battery drained so fast. Only that I couldn't tell which app it might be, my photo is completely restored (originally I thought that was the reason) as well as everything else.

Another possibility is the LTE usage drained battery much faster as most other smart phone experienced. THough I am on wifi at home so why leave LTE on affects the battery life while I am at home is beyond me. I now turned off all the safari pages (as MelissaWalker20 suggested), which could make sense because of that new iCloud function that sync your safari pages and histories between other iOS devices..... (though also NOT making sense because it doesn't affect my iphone 4 and new iPad......) I do hope this is something a new update in iOS could fix but kinda in doubt.... :/
