I have a macbook retina and installed the 10.8.2 update, now it takes a long time to shut down, before it was quick. I rest pram and smc, still no luck

Well, 16 secs seems like a decent shutdown time to me, but then I don't have flash memory. Maybe that's slow on an Air. I see a couple of error messages but no clues.

Try this diagnostic tool

and post the results (though really, both you and the other poster should be starting your own threads rather than hijacking this one... 😉, your issues may be different).

Aleady had that app. Output is pasted below. Normal shutdown on my MacBook Airs using all versions of Lion was 2 to 3 seconds--so 16 seconds is way longer. Because of the quick boot times, I shutdown my MBA's at least every day. The longer shutdown time happened the first time after upgrading to Mtn Lion.

Of my six user login items, two are run right after boot and are then quit. The other four items are apps that I manually quit before shutting down and capturing the log entry above.

Remove everything from your login items list here

 > System Preferences... Users & Groups | Login Items

by highlighting the entire list, then clicking the minus '-' button at the bottom of the pane that shows the apps (NOT the the one at the bottom of the sidepanel on the left!).

Restart the mac. Then shutdown again and test.

EDIT: Uninstall that trial of Paragon while you're at it. If you unintalled it already, remove that 'com.Paragon...' file from the System > Launch Agents folder.

I deleted all login items and then did five reboots. For anyone doing this, make sure you wait at least a couple of minutes after booting before you shut down. There are a lot of post-boot processes that need to run and if you immediately shutdown a just-booted Mac the shutdown will ALWAYS take a long time.

Anyway, I rebooted five times with at least a 3 minute wait between boots. I also opened a Web browser, went to a random Web page and then quit the browser--just so that one app would have been launched. I also opened a Finder window.

That appears to have fixed my problem. Amazing. I'm heading to work now, so I won't be able to start adding login items back one at a time and seeing which one was causing the problem. I'm guessing pseudoanacron, but that's just a guess. Once I can identify the specific item causing this, I'll post again.

Hey softwater: THANKS.

For anyone interested, on my system, having the "Cookie" cookie manager (available in Mac App Store) open during a session, even if manually quit before shutting down, was causing my longer shutdown time. I've reported this to the developer and he's looking into it. I suspect that other users were affected by some other login item.

I'm going to have to think hard on this because Cookie is so useful for me.

Hi,

I am using MBP 13' (Late 2011) bought in June 2012, which came pre-installed with Lion 10.7.3. Have upgraded it to 10.7.4 & then eventually to Mountain Lion 10.8 on 3 Aug 2012.

Today installed 10.8.2 with a hope of a better battery backup & quick boot up and shut down (similar to Lion) but no luck. The boot up seems to have got further delayed by about 10secs from what it was with 10.8 or 10.8.1 & so is the shutdown.

My normal usage is with bluetooth mouse & WiFi. I do not have much items expect 'iTunes Helper' under Login Items. Can you pls assist me?

Try this step. (below) iTunes helper is always in login items and doesn't slow down the boot.

go>computer>mac hd> library> Pull the folders "Launch Agents, launch deamons, and Caches" to the desk top.

It may ask for your Admin password.

then restart.

At this point you can trash those three files. This is a great step to speed up the computer in general. Both on start up/shut down and in all applications.

In the threads above, I indicated that I thought the "Cookie" app, when set as a login item, was causing my slow shutdown. Upon further testing, that doesn't appear to be the case. The problem resurfaced later in the day with ANY login item--any app.

I then deleted the loginitems user preference and began to add back my login items. So far, so good. It's working, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks boisebimmer for replying.

Sorry for some questions before going ahead (as am just a few months old to Mac):

1) Are these folders not required mean are they similar to temp files?

2) Will they be recreated on reboot?

3) After, the reboot I should just delete them from Desktop?
