iPhone 5 gets very hot

Even i am facing the same problem. my iPhone 5 is just a week old. It gets hot when using 3G connection to browse or play any game or play music on the phone. I ve tried all the option i read on this post but none work. Can anyone tell me the email address where i can lodge a compliant with apple?

I'm almost 100% sure that the main cause of heating is any cellular connection- E, 3G, LTE. I'm running it on LTE/3G most of the time and it heats in, like, 5-15 mins. But it's still cold, according to iPod touch 4g on wifi and games :) . No panic! PS: wifi doesnt heat it up at all!!

I might have found the issue. Or at least for me. I am on my 4th iPhone 5. The first one went into pocket heater mode within a few days. The 2nd one lasted a week. The third one about 3 weeks. The current one lasted about 3 weeks also. A complete wipe fixed but then the issue came back.

Well. I fixed it yesterday, I think. I had some iCal appointment I had accepted on the phone but never would sync to the cloud (the were set up right). I couldn't delete them until I created a new calendar called junk and moved the appointment to that calendar. Then I could delete the appointment. And guess what. The battery issue went away. I have not tried to accept the appointments again to see what happens. Either on phone or iCloud. But curious as to what would happen.

The appointments were mime.ics (or something like that) with flight info.

Based on my observations, I consider the reason the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4 also run hot is due to the fact that they are operating in an ambient temperature exceeding 25 degrees Celsius. This can occur for example because the phone is in your shirt pocket and it is a warm day or you are doing some exercise. If the air temperature exceeds about 25 degrees the same problem will occur. If you can put the phone on a stand and there is some wind about, it will operate alright, but if there is no wind, it will heat up and draw down the battery very readily. I doubt there is any fix that can overcome this and I suspect it is a functional limitation of the batteries that are used. In a controlled environment, such as where there is air conditioning, there appears to be no problem. Turning off apps and wifi etc will not work if the ambient air temperature is greater than 25 degrees C in my experience.

I have been following this thread since it started, I did factory reset as new and everything listed here. But nothing helped. So i went to apple store and they replaced my iphon 5.

Guess what........ i still have the same problem.

So i guess there is no solution. Keep changing the phones untill you get the right one.

My friends using iphon 5 never have this problem.

My phon gets hot when i make video calls through skype or fring using 3g draining the battery in few minuts.

Normal internet usage and phon usage is fine.

Now i dont know what to do.

Well my first iPhone had that problem too.

I went to the Apple store and I had it changed. Now, it still heats a bit but it's acceptable. It is normal that the device gets hot a little bit due to the fact that the back is made with aluminium (it conducts heat). What is not normal is when you can barely hold it because it's too hot. So if your iPhone doesn't heat that much, you'll just get used to it. If the battery drains quickly, juste give your iPhone a couple of weeks. My first iPhone's battery was draining really quickly but within three weeks, the problem was almost gone.

I just want to add to the discussion that my wife's white 16GB iphone 5 gets very hot after using facetime for about 15min. She sometimes uses it for phone calls for more than 1 hr, but it does not get very hot compared to what happened the last time she did facetime. We will try to check it out more.

I'm a first-day user of iphone 5. Today i fully charged my phone then start to use but phone is overheating and battery drained in nearly 3 hours. It makes me sick. Is the reason hardware or software i couldn't find any solution in the web. I bought it form new york but i live in istanbul and there is no apple store to swap. How can i use international warranty?

I bought brand new iphone 5 for me and my wife

it makes me sick to see such poor battery life which iphone 3 GS and Iphone 4 didn't suffer from,

the phone also heats up and become so hot that it's scary.

Please don't buy this phone.

But now we are spending our time and money trying to fix apple problems.

I think Tim Cook should resign over this fraud of a defective iphone 5 phone , and it's good that scott forstall was fired too.

This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

If you can't make a good product, then don't bother to take people's money

What is Apple going to do about this issue? I got my iphone5 just a week ago and followed all procedures to prevent battery drainage and overheating. Still it feels like a portable microwave!! I don't think is normal to not be able to speak on the phone beacuse it gets so freaking hot.

After 2 phones and multiple restores, this finally worked:

After backing up your phone, Settings->General->Erase All Content and Settings.

Then set up as a new phone.

DO NOT RESTORE from backup as you may be bringing the problem that was causing the overheating back on your phone.

Slowly add your most favorite apps from the App Store, waiting a day or so to make sure your problem isn't caused by a bad app.

If this doesn't work, take your phone to the Genius' for a new battery/phone.

BEWARE. When you backup your phone, it isn't that easy to get to some of your important data like documents in your favorite programs or photos if you are not using photo stream so pull those out of iTunes.
