Add to iPhoto not working from Mail app

I have Mac OS 10.8.2 installed along with iPhoto '11 (v9.4). When I receive an email that has photos then try to use the "Add to iPhoto" feature from the save menu in the email, nothing happens. I have tried repairing iPhoto and even rebuilding the iPhoto but it is still not working.

I can save the attachments to a folder - that works - but the save directly to iPhoto simply does not work.

Any ideas?

Good catch, EricS! So Apple's known about this since at least early October. It's obviously either NOT 'just a minor issue' that's easy to fix or it would have been addressed by now. Either that or they get so few complaints about it that it's super low on their issue list and not a priority to fix. I'd think a lot of complaints about this would be recorded however, given how often I and people I know try and add photos to iPhoto directly from Mail. So I have to think that this issue is just a lot harder to fix than we would think on the surface of things. Hopefully it will get resolved soon though!

Thanks again!

P.S. As for the guy who was ranting about people supposedly ranting against Apple- The whole reason for these boards is to DISCUSS issues with OTHER Apple users. To seek solutions from other users. Often, someone's seen the issue being described and often even has a fix for the problem. Hence, why people post their issues to this board. What, did you think the Apple discussion boards existed only for people to come and post about how great Apple is? It is and they do but they also seek the wisdom of other users out there. Get a clue! Of course, a response like this is probably what the poster was after- trying to get attention. So I may have given him/her exactly what they wanted with this. We'll see by how and if there's a response. Sheesh. Gotta love how brave and outgoing the anonymous internet makes some people! 🙂

Have a read of the Terms of Service you agreed to when you signed up. While misery may love company, you promised to use this forum to seek technical help from other users and not to vent or rant.

No one ever said that employees never come to the forum. What we say is that Apple don't promise to read anything here. They do promise to read the feedback and that's why we recommend that route. FWIW in my dealings with engineering and support it's clear to me that quite a few don't even know this place exists.

I setup a new account on my computer, a new mail account on my server, and analysed the problem trying to follow log entries while Mail failed to export to iPhoto.

I believe this is related to Apple's Application Sandboxing. The restrictions on Mail are turned up pretty high (as appropriate) to prevent any chance of malware from spreading from the inbox into the OS or other applications and when you try to export to iPhoto, the request is simply denied by the Sandboxing routines.

Apple should have removed the choice to export to iPhoto until they find a working solution.

As for myself, I find that it's easiest to simply drag an image directly from Mail to the iPhoto icon on my Dock. If you have multiple photos, you can shift-click or command-click as necessary and then drag them as a group to iPhoto's icon (or directly into the iPhoto application if it is open and you have enough screen real estate).
