iPhone 5 Bluetooth issues with car

My iPhone 5 is having issues with Bluetooth and my car. It pairs with no problem and I can make calls with no problem. If my phone rings and I try to answer it with the car Bluetooth controls the call picks up then immediately goes back to listening to the radio... But the call is still connected and the phone thinks its still connected to "my car". So I need to quickly pick up the handset and switch the source to phone or the other person will hang up. If it helps the car is a 2010 Infiniti. Any ideas? I already tried re-pairing it. I also tried resetting the network settings.

Thanks in advance

I have a 2011 Infiniti M37x. The Bluetooth connection worked fine with my iPhone 4s, but since upgrading to the iPhone 5 I cannot answer incoming calls. And the problem occurs with my spouse's iPhone 5. iOS 6 upgrades have not fixed the problem. Making outgoing calls is no problem.

JUST WANT TO SAY THE SOLUTION ABOVE WORKS!!! I deleted the phone from the car's Bluetooth paired phone list and renamed my iPhone. I paired the phone again and it answers correctly!! I don't understand why, but it works!

I changed the iPhone name as instructed and I still cannot receieve a call longer then 5 seconds. Its still connected but I cannot hear anything. Is there a step I'm missing?

I changed the name and my GPS recognizes the name and pairs. You mentioned renamed it and repaired it...

Is there a repair step that I'm missing? Or is this happens on its own after renaming the phone?

Thanks

I had a call with Apple Tech Support on this problem this mornign. The following is the feedback I left for apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html I suggest everyone on this forum leave their comments as well, as Apple apparently doesn't give a S%#t about us.

"My iphone 4 worked fine in every car with every IOS version including 6. I got my new iphone 5 and have problems. I pair, I can make calls but when I receive calls in my 2012 Infiniti M37m the bluetooth disconnects. The only way to get the call is to answer on my iphone, then switch it to MyCar. This is extremely dangerous and unlawful in most states! It defeats the entire purpose of having handsfree!

I called Apple with the problem and they needed to have me at my car so they called back this morning as they said it is a setting issue either in my phone or car and they needed me in the car. They called this morning and the first tech had no idea of my problem. After 10 minutes she said she can't handle this and elevated it. Then a Supervisor Kevin came on who I was EXTREMELY disappointed in his assistance and attitude. He initially told me that this is not an Apple problem. They made the phone the car manufacturers need to fix their software to work with their phone. I told him of the forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4349029?answerId=20255150022#20255150022&ac_cid=tw123456#20255150 that has 10 pages of complaints from people with all types of cars, so this is not a car problem but an Apple problem. He told me even though this is on an Apple site, Apple does not read or monitor their own forums. Pretty said and poor customer service from a company that used to pride itself in customer service.

His attitude was it is not Apples's problem. We made the phone if it doesn't work in the car it is the car's problem, even though my iphone 4 with IOS6 worked fine. He then said that is because it is a hardware problem in the iPhone 5 and there is nothing he can do about it. If he sent me a new phone I would have the same problem. Three is nothing Apple can do at this point to fix the problem.

So in summary 1st Apple tells me it is a setting issue in my phone or car. Then it is a car manufacturer problem. Then it is an Apple hardware problem. It is a problem that Apple has no fix for and has no idea how or if ever it will be fixed. It also seems that Apple couldn't care less if it fixed or not.

My conclusion after this phone call is a few people in Apple know of the problem and don't give a **** that it is a major issue for the customer.

Steve Jobs must be rolling over in his grave.

What is Apple going to do to fix this problem hopefully as soon as possible?

A VERY unhappy customer with your product and your service representatives."

Thank you for your very detailed and thoughtfull post Njklutz. It really is a shame Apple is losing what essentially made it the most valuable company in the world. It truly breaks my heart because I have also felt the quality of service and QA in their products drop significantly since Steve Jobs left us.

I have 2 MacBook Pros, 1, MacBook Air, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, Apple TV and 1 Airport Extreme Base Station in my household. I have been an Apple evangelist since 2004 and converted not only my families but most of my friends as well. Their products have always been superior and provided the best end user experience. Unfortuantley between these bluetooth woes and all the WiFi issues (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4322714?start=2190&tstart=0) that are still present on both iPhone 5s in my household, I can no longer be an advocate for the iPhone 5 (and iPad mini which also has the same issues with WiFi).

If iOS 6.1, which was currently released to developers does not fix these two critical problems, I am going to have to, for the first time in 8 years, buy something that is not Apple. I always defended iOS over Android but if 6.1 doesn't fix it, I am left with no choice but to go with the best device that works, and as of right now that would have to be the Samsung Galaxy S3. I don't care how beautiful the iPhone 5 is and how great the quality of its components is, if it doesn't work - it simply doesn't work.

Apple technical support doesn't always have visibility into which high priority bugs the iOS team is addressing. The best way to make Apple aware of the issue it to file a bug report at bugreporter.apple.com. The more reports filed the higer priority this issue will become and it will get addressed.I'd also contact your car company and ask that they work with their Apple contact to escalate the issue and file an internal bug report. It's pure speculation but I think that because of the variety of handfree systems that are effected, Apple is aware of the issue and looking for a common fix. Let's see what happens with iOS 6.1. That will be the first major iOS 6 revision and should address the majority of the outstanding issues. In the mean time we should all continue to put pressure on our car companies to address the problem on their end as well.

The problem is not limited to bluetooth in cars. I use a Plantronics Voyager Pro HD Bluetooth earpiece. The PVPro connects to the iPhone 5 when it is turned on. If a call comes in, I can press a button on the PVPro and the call will be answered on the earpiece. If a second call comes in, and I either hang up from the first call, or place the first call on hold to answer the second call, the phone switches the call to the "iPhone". I have to pick up the phone and change the audio back to the PVPro.

I've been an Apple user since 1982...yes, that long ago. I've never been this deeply disappointed about the quality of the product they put out. I hope it gets fixed soon!

Just got the iPhone 5, replaced my iPhone 4S (which had iOS6 on it) and this 5 will absolutely not pair to any of my car's hands free radios. It's not working on my Benz E class, or BMW 7 series and the 4S (and every prior iPhone model I had) all worked perfectly. In my area it's illegal to not use handfree, so this is a big pain - I can't understand how Apple makes products with such serious flaws - I hope the fix comes real soon, I'm about to reacivate my 4S or just buy a new Galaxy 3 - this is weak.

I submitted one of the earlier replies to this thread the week after the iPhone 5 came out in September. Since then, I've read all these replies as they've come in, and simultaneously, my iPhone 5 has received numerous phone calls in my Infiniti g37, and my wife has received numerous calls on her 5 in her MDX. Our initial problems with pairing have somehow resolved--not sure how. We re-paired the phones twice with our vehicles, and since the last time about a month ago, we are able to receive calls via steering wheel buttons, the calls connect fine and remain connected. Also, my in car bluetooth audio streaming consistently works fine. While we're pleased to have the essential functionality (fully handsfree in car phone bluetooth connectivity), I'm frustrated not to know the cause, and I keep waiting for it to fail again, raising the spectre of the dreaded intermittent problem which is notoriously difficult to troubleshoot. As an earlier replier indicated, I would expect iOS 6.1 will resolve these problems for good, but in the meantime, when I next take my car to Infinit, i'll raise the issue with them, too. It wont hurt if others do the same with their car manufacturers. I'm sure it's on Apple's radar screen by now. As an aside, I agree that Apple has fallen down in several ways this past few months. If they are the company they're supposed to be, they'll right their ship. Or else they'll fade away like Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp. Survival of the fittest in capitalism generally helps the consumer.

I had the same problem with my I phone 5 and my 2011 Infiniti G37. Upgraded the phone to the IOS 6.0.1 and it did not help. So after seeing that there were others with this problem and Apple did not know how to fix it, I returned the Iphone 5 since I was still within the 30 day period. I went back to using my Iphone 4 which never had a problem with bluetooth in my car. The IPhone 4 has been upgraded to use IOS 6.0.1 and it still works fine, so it is not the operating system of the phone, it is in other software. I do not expect Infiniti to solve this problem, so I am hoping that Apple will. Until then I am using the 4. It would be helpful if any of you who have this proble, let us know if it gets fixed.
