iPhone 5 Bluetooth issues with car

My iPhone 5 is having issues with Bluetooth and my car. It pairs with no problem and I can make calls with no problem. If my phone rings and I try to answer it with the car Bluetooth controls the call picks up then immediately goes back to listening to the radio... But the call is still connected and the phone thinks its still connected to "my car". So I need to quickly pick up the handset and switch the source to phone or the other person will hang up. If it helps the car is a 2010 Infiniti. Any ideas? I already tried re-pairing it. I also tried resetting the network settings.

Thanks in advance

Your problem is the prevailing one. Good news for the Nissan/Infiniti owners. A disk will be sent out this week to dealers which fixes this problem. Call your service manager and make sure he knows to call you to set up an appointment when the disk is received. You can call 800-Nissan1 to confirm.

There is nothing in the current IOS updates that will remedy this problem.

I have been in constant contact with a person in the executive offices at Apple. They know of the problem and are working on it as well.

I would keep the pressure on the other vehicle mfgs. Honda/Acura seems to be the next largest problem on this thread.

Once I receive the update I will update this board.

I just went to www.myacura.com, and they have updated the information surrounding the compatibility of the iPhone 5 with newer Acura's. I have a 2013 Acura RDX, and for this model Acura notes:

"Due to the phone software, incoming calls will not be received at random occurrences on the Hands-Free system. We have communicated these issues to the device manufacturer. Please check back for updates."

Specifically, it notes that the iPhone 5 will have issues with (1) incoming calls, (2) certain data connections, and (3) sending text messages. This is exactly the problems I have been experiencing, so at least Acura is now posting that it is aware of the issue. No word on when/if a fix is coming.

Redbirds,

Same exact problems as me. I spoke with the service manager at my dealer and he said a technical service bulletin was sent out last week regarding the issue and he expects the software today or tomorrow. With any luck I'll have it installed this week. I'll report back when I get it updated.

Nissan has handled this very well (from tech phone support to the service department at the dealer)

I have a 2013 Nissan Altima with similar issues as all of you. I emailed Nissan and got the same response of needing to upgrade iPhone to 6.0.1. I'm also on 6.0.2

So I called their number and specifically asked whether there's an software update for the stereo/bluetooth head unit. Support says a new update has been released on January 9th and that I should contact my local dealer to get it installed.

I like to know how many others have called their manufacturer to find out whether there's an update to their bluetooth/stereo

I E-mailed Acura's HandFreeLInk support and although they are aware of the issue they have no plans to issue an update here's the e-mail response I recieved;

Thank you for contacting us in regards to your HandsFreeLink system.

Unfortunately, at this time the iPhone 5 is not compatible with the 2013 Acura RDX because of the incoming call issue. At this time, we are not aware of a fix for this issue. Any kind of change that would resolve this issue would need to be made to the phone and would likely come from Apple, probably in the form of an iOS update. You will need to contact Apple with questions regarding a time frame for the fix. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The HandsFreeLink systems will not be updated to accomodate one type of phone, as this issue is specific to the iPhone 5. The previous versions of the iPhones with iOS 6 work just fine with the system. There is something in the iPhone 5 that does not work properly with the HandsFreeLink system in your vehicle. Our engineers have provided this information to the Apple engineers.

If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at 888-528-7876. We are available Mon-Fri from 7:00am-8:00pm CT.

Sincerely,

HandsFreeLink Customer Service

I'm sure there is something Apple can do to help resolve these issues but Acura needs to take some responsibility as well. The technology in 2013 Acura models is barely updated from what they were selling back in 2007. The HandFreeLink is only fully compatible with Blackebrry devices and that alone speaks to where Acura is with their technology.

I just spoke to my local nissan dealer and have an appointment for 1:30 today to get the update installed. I will let you know if it seems to resolve the issue, but they service manager did agree that the update was specifically supposed to address the incoming call issue.

Have you had any troubles accessing your handset phonebook? I seem to notice this when I have my iphone streaming, but can't say for sure that's the only time.

I agree with you about the service on this both at Nissan and the dealer levels.

I have an BMW Navigator IV Garmin GPS. Made for IBM Motorcycles but its the same as the ZUMO 660. It also doesn't answer calls. The issue you are all having problems with, so is the Navigator IV!! I'm so glad your getting resolution (Hopefully) with the bluetooth issues in your respective vehicles. Impressed your vehicle manufacturers are stepping up to the plate.

I called Garmin and asked them if they've heard of the bluetooth problems with the iPhone 5 and the Navigator IV? The person stated they are aware of the problems but Garmin isn't working on the issue and likely "won't"!!!!??? I don't know if it is because it would require an internal hardware fix vs a software fix. But, this is very much Garmin's typical lack of support...

For those of you with a Garmin Navigator IV GPS here is Garmin's direct BMW Navigator Assist Number: 866-455-7012. Maybe a few more frustrated callers with help move Garmin into a supportive role!!!???

I have the Zumo 665. Same problem. It's hard to work-around when riding the motorcycle. I sometimes spend 12-hour days on my motor; and use the hands-free phone capability whenever wife or family called me. But with the iPhone 5 . . . not any more. It doesn't work.

I've found that Garmin has absolutely excellent support. I've been a customer since the first Garmin 2610 came out, maybe a decade ago. (so long ago, I don't remember).

In this case, it's clear (to me) that Apple created the problem and it's up to Apple to fix it for everyone. That Nissan is making a fix for their high-end car owners that have new cars is admirable. But iPhones used to work with all our cars and motorcycle GPS devices just fine until the '5' came out. Suddenly, we have problems and they're mostly the same root problem for all of us.

Apple apparently has decided to ignore our plight. It's helping me to make a decision on which smart phone to buy next time. If they don't ever fix it, my next smart phone won't be from Apple. (since it's rendered two of my vehicles' hands-free mode operation useless).

I have a 2011 Infiniti G37 and live in Syracuse, NY. There is one Infiniti dealer here, and they have received the disk with the supposed "fix" to Infiniti's bluetooth to make it compatible with the Iphone 5. Although I am very excited about this and feel that Infinti/Nissan has certainly done a better job for their customers than the other manufacturers so far, I was the first person to call the dealer and ask them to install it. Frankly, I don't want to be first! So please if any of the rest of the Infiniti owners out there get this patch installed, can you please post the results and your experience on this board? Please include how long the process takes. Thanks for your help.

Jan 17, 2013 8:24 PM in response to Karennan

What I worry about is that after getting the Nissan/Infiniti update, Apple releases their own iOS update that breaks bluetooth again. And I hope this Nissan/Infiniti update doesn't make things worse; hopefully Nissan have excellent Quality Assurance testers.

So if someone already got it installed or getting it installed within a few days, please post a review of the update.

Thanks.
