Why are the subtitles doubled on iTunes movie purchases?

I've got the same issue. I was thinking it was related to the fact that I'm playing the 1080p version on a Apple TV that only supports 720p. The subtitles are slightly offset.

What Apple TV are you using and is it updated to the latest OS?

Same issue, bought the Avengers yesterday, and had double subtitles when Black Widow is being interrogated. Really annoying. My subtitle settings are off as well on both the Apple TV and my actual television, so I don't know why the captions were automatic. Any fix would be awesome.

Summary: Basically whomever put this movie package together screwed up and you can't do anything about it.

Detailed:

There are 3 typical ways to show subtitles.

1. Embedded/Overlay text on the video track

2. Forced subtitle track

3. Regular subtitle track

Normally they would use either method 1 or 2 but it is wrong to do both. However, it is a Catch-22 problem.

- If only method 1 is used, the subtitles are always shown even if you didn't enable subtitles or your video player doesn't support subtitle tracks. (However, they might not be in your language)

- If only method 2 is used, and your video player didn't support subtitles then you wouldn't get any subtitles. If it does support them, which the AppleTV does, then it will always show them regardless of your "Subtitles Enabled/Disabled" setting.

It seems that this movie uses both methods 1 and 2 which is why you see duplicated subtitles.

Method 3 is the track you can control from the Subtitles menu. If you enable the subtitles, it will show them for all the speaking parts, not just the Russian in this scene.

I hope this help you to understand what is going on but unfortunately there isn't a [legal] way to fix this.

I'm having the same issue. I think its only this movie thats doing it. All my subtitles are off in settings. Anybody hear of something yet with a fix?

I have the same problem. With the same movie. This is ridiculous. They need to fix it or refund our money.

I am also having this exact problem with Avengers. 1080p Apple TV running 5.1 OS.

What I find incredible is the lack of quality control.

I has a refund on an animated feature a few months ago as the encoding was so bad that solid blocks of colour appeared as alternating light/dark dues.

I'm having the same problem with multiple movies, ranging from Avengers to the first Transformers movie. Doesn't seem to be an isolated issue with a particular film's format and Smudge suggests. Have the problem on both AppleTV and my iPhone 4S.

I'm having the exact same issue with The Avengers movie as well as the first Transformers. It's super annoying! I don't have AppleTV, but the Transformers movie was showing it twice on my iPad. I use my MacBook Pro to watch movies on and is where I first noticced it. I've checked and rechecked my settings, removed both movies, re-added them, and nothing. I've written Apple twice now and am waiting for a response. Hopefully this issue can be resolved! It'd sure be nice to watch a movie without a bunch of text hogging the screen!

Strange that Transformers does this based on it's age. Has it just been released in HD?

I am having the same problem. In addition, even after the characters finish up in their native language, the last subtitle stays on for perpetuity. The only way to get it off the screen is to exit out of the movie and then go back in.
