Can't hear through earpiece in iPhone 5

I'm having some issues with my mew iPhone. It seems that with most calls I'm sending or receiving the ear piece on the phone does not work.

I've discovered by trail & error (sometimes) if I turn the speaker phone on and then off again the ear piece will work.

The issue is consistent through phone calls and with visual voice mail.

Anyone had a similar issue?

hi all i think nasguy is on the money with his headphone jack booger theory....

i had an iphone 3 a while back and when i was in colombia i was walking along the street as you do and a car went past and a splash went all over me any my phone which was in my hand, and when i got home the fckn earpiece wouldnt make any sound 😢 . i thought...well maybe some water went up the headphone jack....i cleaned it out and it was right as rain 😀.

Just now i was down at the gym in brizvegas and went to make a call in my iphone 5 and fck it no earpiece sound 😟.

so i googled it and found this page....nasalguy and his booger theory reminded me of one of my experiences in colombia, and just now i rolled up a piece of tissue into a small joint replica and did a good old booger twirl clean out of the jack socket, and low and beyold now all is tip top 🙂 . just spoke crap for an hour with a m8...sound was fine, but we still only talked p*ssy related banter, but apple wont be able to fix that

hi

this is not strage as like most people from here stated

it happns when the phone was dropped numerous times

the digitizer detach itself as a result put pressure on top left side of the frame

the speaker assembly has springs and sometimes those springs do not make any contact with the flex cable hidden underneath

please look if the digitizer has a belly look everywhere arround it

to permament fix the issue is to replace the entire lcd assembly

and is not a manufacturer error is the end user abuse

thanks

Hi

I had this same problem with my iPhone5 and the replacement one they gave me. iOS7 update cured it for some strange reason. It can be the bluetooth connecting to a speaker and it can be because it has been dropped but mine was a software issue. It just shows there are a few things that can cause this. My handset has been protected front and back from new and I'm ultra careful with it. Those that are adamant of one specific thing causing this issue are talking crap...

Unable to make phone calls with the phone applied to my ear. However, I was able to make phone calls using the speaker. The headphone jack worked as well, as I was able to listen to songs. However, I was unable to listen to music using the iPhone built in speaker!

Cleaned out the headphone jack with a toothpick and then a toothpick with a Kleenex wrapped around it. WOW! A bunch of crud came out of the headphone port!

I then tried to listen to my music with the iPhone speaker, and it worked! Made a phone call with the phone to my ear, and that worked also!

Note, I use my phone a lot with headphones, and with an arm band when I run. It's good to clean this out every now and then. Also note, I've owned my iPhone 5 for 1 1/2 years, and never had this problem before.

Hi All,

My issues were this...

  • Started getting very very low sound from earpeice one day (after warranty period) which i could not resolve, using speaker option in calls and I could hear the caller perfectly (of course).
  • Two days in I lost all sound completely through earpiece and pushing in on the top of the case seemded to improve this however after a couple of days doing this it was far more miss than hit in getting the earpiece to work; to clarify this was both in active voice calls and listening to voicemail through the earpiece
  • After suffering for several weeks I purchased tools and earpiece repacement part, successfully repaced the part and tested by listening to voicemails, eureka, it worked, I could hear voicemails.
  • the day after I answered an incoming call only to find silence once again and I had to revert back to activating the speaker option (right, at this point I'm biggining to get a little ****** off now).
  • Checking again I can hear voicemails but active voice calls are still a problem although, pressing the case once again seems to ahve a temporary effect.

I find myself on this support forum for the first time and surprised to see that this is as common an issue as it seems to be.

Anyway, to my point, the other poeple may be onto something with the headphone jack socket getting "CRUD!" in it as sure enought a turned my phone off and took a paper clip to investigate and a bunch of compounded pocket fluff (CRUD) came out, a few little tests later and the problem seems to have gone away.

I sumise that the compounded CRUD causes interference enough to fool the phone into thinking headphones are plugged in and that it is in handsfree mode and that pressing the case causes a stronger signal from the earpiece component helping to switch the phone back to non handsfree mode, just a theory though.

I will keep an eye on my problem and if it has been resolved more permanently will update this post again.

Earpiece or Receiver on my Iphone 5 was not working i tried all of the options below, its working now

  1. Verify that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack, including headsets, headphones, or adapters.
  2. Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not switched to silent.
  3. While on the Home screen, adjust the volume buttons. If you see the icon below, indicating that headphones are attached, there may be debris or an object lodged in the headset jack:

  4. Check the headset jack. If there is an object lodged in the headset jack that is not easily removed, have the iPhone serviced to remove object.
  5. For Original iPhone: If there is light debris, such as lint, in the headset jack, try connecting a pair of headphones to the headset jack and then remove the headphones. Repeat this several times to remove the debris.
  6. If you have installed a protective film on the display, either ensure that the receiver is not covered or remove the film completely.
  7. Check the receiver mesh (which is on the top front of the device, above the display). If it appears blocked, use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to carefully and gently brush away any debris.
  8. If you have paired with a Bluetooth headset that is nearby, either use the headset or turn Bluetooth off (choose Settings > General > Bluetooth).
  9. Restart the iPhone.
  10. If restarting the iPhone doesn't resolve the issue, try restoring the device.

I have a 5 a space grey with same problem. I put it on charge and the next time I made a call I could hardly hear the other person. Tried cleaning the mesh and no luck, reset settings and still nothing. I read that a few people had problems with the contacts to the speaker so I decided to flick the phone at the front and back of the earpiece and what do ya know..... Good as new now! Give this a try before you reset or get a new phone. Worked for me!
