iPad 3 and iOS 6 - Home button not working

Since updating to iOS 6, the iPad 3's home button has been acting quite flaky. It often stops responding all together, forcing me to use gestures to quit apps or to access the multitasking panel. I've tried rebooting the device and re-calibrating the home button but the improvements are short-lived.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks,

Kenroy

I too had the same problem. But to fix it follow this steps

1.Open setting > General > Reset

2.In Reset tap RESET ALL SETTINGS (It wont delete any of your data)

3.After resetting wait for the iPad to restart and finally you will get response from your home button

4.It might not be very responsive at first but after few days of use your home button will be back to normal.

done all the above, home button not responding comes and goes... can't find why nothing helps.

sometimes after reset it works for some time and then it stops responding at all. nothing works for a while and then when I get the ipad after couple of hours or after work it works... couple minutes later it stops... or it works again... there is nog app or time or certain action... random breakdown... it sure *****...

No. I reported the bug a couple days ago and I just checked to see if its status had changed. It has not changed, so I don't think they have even read it yet. I would encourage everyone to report the bug. Maybe then it will get attention. I reported it here:

https://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/

which may be only for developers (which I am). There may be other places to report it and if so you should report it there as well.

Sounds like a hardware malfunction.

If you don't want to get it fixed, I have a workaround for you:

In the Settings: General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch = ON

This will place an inconspicuous button on the iPad's screen, and when you tap that button, it will enlarge and show four options: Gestures, Device, Home and Favorites.

Tapping Home on the screen will simulate pressing the hardware Home button on your iPad.

The AssistiveTouch button can be moved to just about anywhere on the screen according to your convenience.

I am an Apple Enterprise customer and put a ticket in with Apple and was told it's a hardware malfunction, and if it's out of warranty, sorry. But we can send it in and pay for a fix.

I have zero problems with the home button prior to the upgrade, and on reboot after upgrade, it doesn't work at all. What a coincidence this "hardware" problem didn't present itself until the software upgrade, which I can't undo.

To answer question above - by full factory reset I meant I plugged it into iTunes and did a restore without restoring any backup to device and problem continues. I did this twice from 2 different machines at Apple's suggestion.

This is most likely not a hardware issue. It was fine with IOS 5.1.

The problem started after the IOS6 update which added the SIRI function to the home button.

I reset all as was recommended and it is working for now.

My guess is that a new operating system function with respect to the home button is now failing.

There is good information on what do if your home button fails here:
