iOS 6 update - cannot connect to wifi with proxy

We have 300 IPad 2's to configure and they cant connect to our wifi. Since the upgrade we can no longer connect our proxy network as we did before. We use an explicit proxy where we manually enter the proxy address. WPA2 Security. We contacted Apple support and after an hour they said they didn’t know how to resolve the issue and needed to research. This was 5 days ago so im reaching out to the Apple community. We contacted our proxy support BlueCoat and they have escalated the issue to their top level support. After the iOS 6 update we are basically dead in the water.

We select DHCP under our network settings and select Manual under the http Proxy settings. After filling in the Server, port, authentication info and try to connect, it immediately brings up a safari page that states "Error Opening Page - Hotspot login cannot open the page because it could not connect to the server".

The other issue we have even with iOS 5 is we could not connect to https sites.

Russell, I do have a work around. There is an option on the sonicwall to disable the pop-up window when a user authenticates. Once I turned that off everyone was able to login with no problems. One thing to consider, and you are probably already aware, is that when you turn off that pop-up the user will not be able to view the time remaining for their login session and there won't be a link for them to log out. I figured that none of my user were actually logging out anyway (judging by the number of times I find them leaving themselves logged on to their PCs) so I was ok with turning it off.

On the Sonicwall, yours may be a little different, go to Users -> Settings. Scroll down to "User session settings" and untick the box for "

Also, If you are using the option for the Sonicwall to display the Acceptable Use Policy, you may have to disable that as well. I turned it on last week then iUsers started showing up in my office because they couldn't connect anymore.

I have a call in to Apple's elevated support but they have not gotten back to me...since October.

That screen that pops up after you connect to the network and open safari seems to be the auto-login feature. For me it was interferring with signing into the sonicwall since it doesn't seem to allow popups and since it failed would automatically disconnect me from the network before I could try logging in through safari.

To get around it I went to my wi-fi settings and hit the blue arrow over on the network and turned off the auto-login. After that I was able to log in through the safari browser without issue.

Thanks for detailed reply. Unfortunatley changing those settings did not work for our environment, but a subsequent post below by ISD Dusty, saying to upgrade to the just release IOS6.1 and adjusting the new setting "Auto-Login" to NO under your network SSID's Wi-fi settings, resolved the problem. Yeah, Finally, I can use the ipad on an enterprise class network again.
