Iphone 5 sometimes touch screen unresponsive

Just got my Iphone5 last Friday and found it occasionally unresponsive, I cannot tap into any apps, and sometimes I cannot even swipe to unlock the phone.

But in other times it is fully functional, so guess it is software other than hardware issue. Already tried restore it once, the problem is still on and off.

Anyone having similar issue?

iPhone 5, iOS 6

marcelcn nailed it: My iPhone 5 (black, 64 gig) freezes (gets partially unresponsive) once the charge reaches 95%. Taking off the cover, this stopped happening - but if I lay the phone down (while still plugged in), it freezes in both cases (cover on/off). Clearly a static electricity issue. After picking it up again, I have to briefly hit the off/on to make it respond again.

I tested it with both original and third party chargers (original cables), and the problem only happens with the old charger for my iPod Touch 2. gen. iPhone 5 charger (same specs; 1 A output) and third party (2.2 A output) are both fine.

Thanks for inspiring me to do those checks, I'll now reserve the old charger for my iPod only (but removing the cover would work, too).

I had my second iPhone 5 replaced with a new iPhone 5 due to the fact that whenever I had my iPhone charging, my screen would go nuts i.e. unresponsive, random events (like my phone has been hacked). So, to clarify, I've only had this phone for a half a day and now (again, BRAND new phone) it's showing the same exact problem my last phone had. I did use my last back up but I don't see how this would cause a problem since I created it weeks prior to this issue popping up . The guys at the Apple Store said it's a hardware issue. They took my last phone and the charging cable to the back to test it but couldn't reproduce the noticeable problems. The guy came back and replaced my iPhone with a new one and said my cable was fine. So as of right now, I have no idea why this issue would pop up. Again, this is only happening to me when I have my iPhone plugged in and charging. It's very frustrating....

I wont name the guy at the Apple store but should (from the 4th street store in Berkley) who checked my phone at the Genious bar (NOT) but after going twice now ( first girl did co,plete reinstall which did not help) and this last guy telling me that they have had a lot of complaints about these screen freezes there was nothing they can do and will not replace the phone. I just got fed up as I have 3 of them here and only 1 does it. I pushed back and mentioned these forums but he didn't care.

So I am looking now at selling all my apple stuff and moving on to a galaxy and he didn't really care about that either. I have had it with the poor service and what appears to be a hardware problem with some of these phones. He then told me to take a snaphot picture of the phone (how the heck is that going to help) and practically inferred I was lying. I get the feeling they know its some hardware problem.

I am just living with my problem for now but again this am I have 2 here on the table and I can slide the slider on one and the other I cant, but in a few hours I am sure it will start responding again, Not sure if its static electricity, or a cold screen/ fingers or what but why is it only the 1 phone.

Anyway, I am not going back again and I am beyond the 30 days so ATT wont do anything as I tried this last week, they say its apples problem, But since I have the itunes library I need to move the family off together and transition all 4 phones to a new platform and sell all the phones' .BTW that new itunes is terrible too wow how sad.

I was planning to buy a mini too that day but after this genus bar appt I did not and have not bought a tablet yet.

Anyway my dilemma ends here as I just do not want to go back again and good luck to all you but apple is losing it and maybe that's why the stock is selling off. They have just about lost my families business after this since I am paying for these phones.

Sincerley,

Totally fed up.Steve

I have just discovered tonight that my screen does this Jittery kind of dance, while scrolling through web pages with my iPhone 5 it was shaking weirdly and hurting my eyes when I stop scrolling and leave my finger on the screen it jitters up and down I also noticed when I type sometimes it incorrectly enters the wrong letter I thought it was just me typing wrong but after being very careful and deliberate with my keystrokes I know it's not me and it is the touch screen responding incorrectly to my touches. Then after a little experimentation and reading some of these comments in the forums I discovered if I unplug my phone while my finger is touching the screen and it is going all jittery as soon as I unplug it it stops. Then I took my cover off plugged my phone in held my finger on the screen while it lay flat on the table the only thing touching the phone was my index finger and guess what it started to jitter but as soon as I touched the metal side with the my finger on my other hand it stopped again.

Now, I have a hard case protection, so I don´t have contact with the aluminum body of the iphone. Taking the case off, now touching the aluminum, plugged to the cable, the screen is totally responsive.

This took care of the issue I was having. I installed a new outlet in the kitchen that has two USB ports and one regular outlet and this started happening. It only does in on my 5. The wife's 4s and the four Touch's (1 3rd gen and 3 4th gens) in the house are un-affected.

While touching the bare phone, it works fine. When I grab the case, it works for about 3 more seconds then starts getting jumpy and quits responding again after 7 seconds. Very strange.

If you are having issues while it's being charged it's likely a bad charger. I tested this with three iphone 5's and 4 chargers. The bad charger would cause the same screen touch issues on each iphone, changing cables did not correct the problem. As soon an another charger was used the screen response issues go away and things are normal. The charger that was bad was from Amazon and was sold as an OEM. It's look the same as the others but I have a feeling it was a knock off because it didn't come in Apple packaging.

All three phones were iphone 5's running 7.0.2. Two chargers were ones packaged with the phones and 2 packaged with iPads. The bad charger was from Amazon had been working until one morning I discovered my phone didn't charge overnight and was non-responsive to touch. That's when I did my testing.

Hey guys!!

I also was experiencing this problem. It's not because of the lightning cable or the iPhone 5. I experienced it on my 4S with the original charger from apple that came with the phone.

What I believe the problem is mainly experienced by users who have full body cases just like I have. When I took off the case, it worked fine. It has to be a problem concerning statics and it depends on the charger in my opinion. Using a non-apple charger even with the case on the phone doesn't produce the jittering.

However, I just took of the case, cleaned everything thoroughly and then put the case back on. Now, the jittering has vanished even when I am using the same original apple charger with a case. Strange huh?

I hope you guys get rid of it too. It's really annoying.

I've been having this same issue as well.. I have an iPhone 5S on iOS 7.0.3.. this is actually my 3rd iPhone 5S, I've returned 2 for personal reasons, and I've noticed this issue on ALL of them.. I don't know how different the digitizer is compared to the iPhone 4S, which was my last iPhone and I certainly didn't have so many moments of unresponsiveness with it as I am having now, but certainly something is different with Apple's newer phones.

I came here today to say that I believe the problem is with my finger/finger tips.. just now, I was taping & swiping on my phone and there was no response to my (finger)touch.. after I let out a huge *sigh*, I grabbed my pen+stylus and sure enough, the phone responded JUST FINE to the stylus... After 3+weeks with the new iPhone 5S, I'm led to believe the screen is MUCH-MORE sensitive to (IDK? say~) the temperature of your fingertip???
