@me.com domain gone from alias; can't send or receive email; anyone else?

I am an original iTools (@mac.com) subscriber. I switched to MobileMe and last year to iCloud. I have the max of 3 aliases allowed under iCloud.

Earlier today, 9/26, I could send and receive email from/to all of my 3 alias accounts in both Mac (desktop) Mail client and on iOS 6, but this evening, the "@me.com" version of one alias is gone from icloud.com's accounts preference list, which only shows:

alias_name @mac.com

alias_name @iCloud.com

Trying to send or receive mail from/to -- alias_name @ me.com -- results in either an SMTP Server error (when sending) or a delivery failure notice to a (working) account I sent from, which reads:

Remote host said: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: alias_name @ me.com [RCPT_TO]

Reporting-MTA: dns;nk11p00mm-spool002.mac.com (tcp_intranet-daemon)

Arrival-date: Thu, 27 Sep 2012 03:15:46 +0000 (GMT)

Original-recipient: rfc822;alias_name @me.com

Final-recipient: rfc822;alias_name @me.com

Action: failed

Status: 5.1.1 (unknown or illegal alias)

The other 2 aliases both list:

alias_name_here @mac.com

alias_name_here @me.com

alias_name_here @iCloud.com

and obviously work as expected (though I haven't tested to see if "@iCloud.com" variant works yet or not).

Has anyone else experienced this, where the @me.com domain has disappeared as an option for an alias? Did it come back on its own?

I've called Apple Support and the only route we could think of was to sign out of iCloud in System Preferences and then sign back in, which unfortunately did not resolve the issue. I was told there is work in progress that is likely behind this, but there was no ETA for completion other than to check back in 24 hours.

I'm relieved to report that on this memorable day that my @me.com email alias has returned. It was gone for one week.

It seemed to have taken specific intervention on my account by the technical support personnel to correct the problem, based on a call I received yesterday afternoon. It looks like all the mail messages sent to me during this past week are gone for good, unfortunately.

I'm expecting a follow-up call from Apple support, and if I learn anything new, I'll post it.

Roger - I too do not have my @me alias. Over 24 hours now. Any updates from Apple on when the @me email situation will be fixed?

I've not heard anything: they may not even know themselves - it's not always possible with intractable technical problems to predict a resolution time. Some people have got their addresses back, but it's probably happening piecemeal.

Today is Day 12 for me.

Just ended a call with the Apple support rep who returned my call from Friday; the case has been escalated as high as it can get (engineering) and it's up to them to resolve it. He's going to ask them for a status update.

I politely expressed my frustration with the delay and apparent lack of customer support -- it is not the Apple response I've been accustomed to for 17+ years.

I have the same problem since Friday (I think). I also spotted one other anomoly/corruption with the "broken" alias - anybody else see the same as number 3 below?

I have a main account and 4 aliases. The main account and 3 of the 4 aliases all have alias@icloud.com, alias@mac.com, and alias@me.com.

The broken one has alias@icloud.com but is missing alias@me.com and alias@mac.com

Looking on icloud.com email -> preferences -> accounts :-

  1. The list on left correctly shows main account + 4 aliases
  2. The three working aliases show the "Description" field as the same name as the alias.
  3. BUT, the broken alias shows the "Description" field as "iCloud" - the same as the description field of a main account. In discussion with cust support they also mentioned there was something funny with what was showing as my main account.

Anybody else seen the same corruption with their aliases that are not working?

Oh and like many others the one that got corrupted is of course the main one I use for loads of online accounts, flights, etc etc!

Happy to report that my issue has been resolved; I asked to escalate and the response / offer was to put my account into "troubleshooting mode" (the engineers have you reset the password on your Apple ID to be a password of their choosing so they can access your iCloud account and see exactly what you're seeing in order to identify and resolve the issue). You have to agree to a disclaimer, of course, but I felt it was worth it.

Did that on a Sunday afternoon, my missing @me.com alias was restored sometime between then and Monday morning and still works currently (knock on wood). The missing alias is once again listed on iCloud.com > Mail > Preferences > Accounts and via Mail in both Mountain Lion and iOS 6.

It took almost 2 weeks to get this resolved but the persistence paid off.

hi guys, I think i finally got the solution how to fix the issue that we are talking about here.

1. login to http://appleid.apple.com

2. you might find your lost @me.com address is displayed as your primary email, which is weird, and wrong.

3. edit it, correct it.

4. update your secruity settings, to force server re-freshing your account.

5. login to iCloud, mail -> preferences -> accounts, your lost @me.com should be there again.

it's all about apple mistakenly asigned wrong Primary Email when new @iCloud.com was deployed.

still, I would never imagine the apple would drag me into this, and seems apple never treat this as important.

hope it will help!
