@me.com domain gone from alias; can't send or receive email; anyone else?

I am an original iTools (@mac.com) subscriber. I switched to MobileMe and last year to iCloud. I have the max of 3 aliases allowed under iCloud.

Earlier today, 9/26, I could send and receive email from/to all of my 3 alias accounts in both Mac (desktop) Mail client and on iOS 6, but this evening, the "@me.com" version of one alias is gone from icloud.com's accounts preference list, which only shows:

alias_name @mac.com

alias_name @iCloud.com

Trying to send or receive mail from/to -- alias_name @ me.com -- results in either an SMTP Server error (when sending) or a delivery failure notice to a (working) account I sent from, which reads:

Remote host said: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: alias_name @ me.com [RCPT_TO]

Reporting-MTA: dns;nk11p00mm-spool002.mac.com (tcp_intranet-daemon)

Arrival-date: Thu, 27 Sep 2012 03:15:46 +0000 (GMT)

Original-recipient: rfc822;alias_name @me.com

Final-recipient: rfc822;alias_name @me.com

Status: 5.1.1 (unknown or illegal alias)

The other 2 aliases both list:

alias_name_here @mac.com

alias_name_here @me.com

alias_name_here @iCloud.com

and obviously work as expected (though I haven't tested to see if "@iCloud.com" variant works yet or not).

Has anyone else experienced this, where the @me.com domain has disappeared as an option for an alias? Did it come back on its own?

I've called Apple Support and the only route we could think of was to sign out of iCloud in System Preferences and then sign back in, which unfortunately did not resolve the issue. I was told there is work in progress that is likely behind this, but there was no ETA for completion other than to check back in 24 hours.

Hey andycool - thanks alot! This worked!

You have to follopw exactly what andycoll wrote - especially the part of updating the security settings in the AppleID panel (on AppleID website).

I also gave this information to the Apple support (I allready had a ticket open) - maybe it helps others...

Hi all

Unfortunately the solution didn't worked for me too...I changed the security settings (secret answers) but nothing was changed in the mail preferences within the icloud webinterface.I use apple products since 1991 and this is the WORST bug EVER....my ticket is still open.

Andy, thanks a lot for your valuable tips! I lost my aliases today and I have to send several emails to suppliers around the world..!!! So, I was really scared of not being able to fix this issue asap!, but your tips brought me back! thanks a lot

..what do you mean with "correct it"? My .me.com address isn't my primary email anymore, but it is still listet as alternate email adress. Do I have to delete it there? I'm afraid of this since this is my only proof to apple that i had this adress....

This morning 31st October I couldn't retrieve my email from one of my alias me.com accounts.

I re-entered the password but that didn't work. I changed the password via icloud.com for the alias account and it accepted my new password but wouldn't let me login to my mail via icloud or by using Apple Mail or Sparrow on my iMac.

I can receive email to the main me.com email address and other alias accounts its just one of them that is not working. I have tried deleting keychain entries for the alias account.

I don't get a login error in Mail or on my iphone but there is no new mail showing. I get a login error using Sparrow.

When I login to my primary email account on iCloud none of my alias email addresses are showing in mail/preferences/accounts.

I got the email from Apple telling me I now have an Apple email account name@icloud.com. I was happy to get this as I don't like atme.com. but when I chose the new one in the iCloud website,i could not sned an email from the new icloud.com but O could send the same email by changing the sender to the original me.com account. Grrr.

OK I sloved the problem. I deleted the icloud account and strated again by adding a new account in mail preferences. When I put in name@icloud.com all the necessary details was automatically inserted I did not get an opportunity to mess it up. so it worked both sending and receiving. I hope this helps some of you.
