@me.com domain gone from alias; can't send or receive email; anyone else?

I am an original iTools (@mac.com) subscriber. I switched to MobileMe and last year to iCloud. I have the max of 3 aliases allowed under iCloud.


Earlier today, 9/26, I could send and receive email from/to all of my 3 alias accounts in both Mac (desktop) Mail client and on iOS 6, but this evening, the "@me.com" version of one alias is gone from icloud.com's accounts preference list, which only shows:


alias_name @mac.com

alias_name @iCloud.com


Trying to send or receive mail from/to -- alias_name @ me.com -- results in either an SMTP Server error (when sending) or a delivery failure notice to a (working) account I sent from, which reads:


Remote host said: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: alias_name @ me.com [RCPT_TO]

Reporting-MTA: dns;nk11p00mm-spool002.mac.com (tcp_intranet-daemon)

The other 2 aliases both list:

alias_name_here @mac.com

alias_name_here @me.com

alias_name_here @iCloud.com


and obviously work as expected (though I haven't tested to see if "@iCloud.com" variant works yet or not).


Has anyone else experienced this, where the @me.com domain has disappeared as an option for an alias? Did it come back on its own?


I've called Apple Support and the only route we could think of was to sign out of iCloud in System Preferences and then sign back in, which unfortunately did not resolve the issue. I was told there is work in progress that is likely behind this, but there was no ETA for completion other than to check back in 24 hours.

@davelancel -- I've had a case # with support open since last Thursday morning (it went down sometime mid-day on Wednesday, 9/26), and mine is still not fixed.


Like AliasATMe.com, I'm wondering who opened a support ticket and had their issue resolved, vs those who didn't open a ticket and also have had their issue resolved. One would think that those with an active case # on file would have the issue resolved promptly, but maybe I'm being too logical.


Just 24 more hours until a full week since mine went down, while others have only been down 2-3 days (based on their posts to this thread) before getting fixed. Very, very frustrating.

Hello again to my new @me.com friends! Regarding whether a support ticket speeds things up, it hasn't with me. I've had a ticket open and have had several calls with two senior support reps, and I still don't have a functioning @me.com email alias. This is day six of a total outage.


One item of interest in yesterday's call with Apple support. When I mentioned the @me.com was my primary business email address, she said that if I had read the fine print when signing up for MobileMe I would have seen that Apple does not recommend using their email service for business! Has anybody else heard this? This makes no sense to me.

iCloud is intended as a personal service, not a business one: anyone who depends on email for their business should obtain a proper business account, where they would be paying for better support and reliability - also using an @me.com or @icloud.com address announces to your customers that you aren't prepared to pay for a business service.

Roger, .mac and mobileMe were not free services, and up until recently I considered Apple to be a company known for good products, including quality support and reliability.


I now agree with your point that since I depend on email for my business, I better pick a better vendor than Apple. I hate to let my customers see that I don't have enough sense to use a quality company, not some "fly by night", flakey operation like Apple. Thanks.

Thanks Roger, for confirming that this relatively expensive apple service is something shoddy and unreliable that should not be used by anyone for whom email is important. An important message from a level 8 support forum ninja. If only apple had put that on the marketing material, I would have gone elsewhere and would not be so royally scr3wed by them now. Actually I would argue a 6 day outage even on a personal email service is quite a lot, and makes it a pretty crappy paid personal email service.

Que? iCloud is free at basic level. You only pay if you want extra storage, and it's the storage you are paying for. The email service is entirely free - any free email service isn't really a good choice for a business where profits depend on it. However I would agree that even as a personal and free service these various outages and glitches aren't acceptable.
