@me.com domain gone from alias; can't send or receive email; anyone else?

I am an original iTools (@mac.com) subscriber. I switched to MobileMe and last year to iCloud. I have the max of 3 aliases allowed under iCloud.

Earlier today, 9/26, I could send and receive email from/to all of my 3 alias accounts in both Mac (desktop) Mail client and on iOS 6, but this evening, the "@me.com" version of one alias is gone from icloud.com's accounts preference list, which only shows:

alias_name @mac.com

alias_name @iCloud.com

Trying to send or receive mail from/to -- alias_name @ me.com -- results in either an SMTP Server error (when sending) or a delivery failure notice to a (working) account I sent from, which reads:

Remote host said: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: alias_name @ me.com [RCPT_TO]

Reporting-MTA: dns;nk11p00mm-spool002.mac.com (tcp_intranet-daemon)

Arrival-date: Thu, 27 Sep 2012 03:15:46 +0000 (GMT)

Original-recipient: rfc822;alias_name @me.com

Final-recipient: rfc822;alias_name @me.com

Action: failed

Status: 5.1.1 (unknown or illegal alias)

The other 2 aliases both list:

alias_name_here @mac.com

alias_name_here @me.com

alias_name_here @iCloud.com

and obviously work as expected (though I haven't tested to see if "@iCloud.com" variant works yet or not).

Has anyone else experienced this, where the @me.com domain has disappeared as an option for an alias? Did it come back on its own?

I've called Apple Support and the only route we could think of was to sign out of iCloud in System Preferences and then sign back in, which unfortunately did not resolve the issue. I was told there is work in progress that is likely behind this, but there was no ETA for completion other than to check back in 24 hours.

From my understanding you are only allowed up to 5 aliases on icloud. The automatic icloud.com that was converted from me.com count in those 5. So if you had 3 aliases on me.com one of your me.com emails were automatically deleted.

This is the response I got from Apple Support.

I just wanted to send you an update about the issue that you were having. I just received a notification that was sent out to all of our advisors here at AppleCare, they said that they are aware of the issue that is going on with iCloud aliases, looks like you are not the only one, that they are currently working on. They did not inform us of an estimated time, but they stated they would send out another notification once they have figured out and resolved the issue. So I will keep in touch with you and provide you with any updates I receive about this issue. And if necessary, we will still be able to work with engineering about the issue if the resolution does not fix your account.

It's the other way round. iCloud allows only three aliases: MobileMe allowed 5. If you migrated from MobileM with 5 aliases, all 5 will be maintained but if you want to create a new one you have to delete three, not one. No existing aliases should have been deleted but as your quoted response from Apple says, something odd has been going on.

This is not my understanding and certanly not my case. All my aliases still there ( 5 of them I had cause of mobileme family account) they all have mac.com and me.com but one of them the most important one still exist as mac.com and icloud ( all have iCloud ) but they removed the me.com

You can easiely check this by logging on to mail via the browser then mail preferences>and aliases you will see all of those variants in there.

By the way I had Apple care calling me this evening and they admitted this is a know issue and are busy escalating it to the iCloud engineers but no clue on a timeline for a solution.

10/1 update: Left a message with the AppleCare tech I spoke with last week Thursday; he called back and confirmed that it is now a known issue affecting (an apparently small number of) users. No apparent known cause as yet, but engineers are investigating. Like others, I also was not given an ETA other than "hopefully sometime soon".

*sigh*

I requested that they post something to the iCloud Status page so that people can keep tabs on the issue there and he said he would pass along that feedback. Otherwise, it's basically on me to follow-up with him every few days until the issue is resolved.

My @mac and @me where always working.

I was aware of the @icloud yesterday while was asked to fill the 3 new question-and-answer during an app download from iTunes.

I have tested and see that all work and the @icloud mail is received into my usual icloud inbox therefore it seems all 3 are ALIAS.

Same on my iPhone.

On Mac I see that in the select window for the outgoing server there is now also the chance to select @icloud

Quick update - my friendly support guy phoned me as promised this morning. Really just confirmed what we knew. The iCloud implementation team aware of the problem and working on a fix but not putting a timescale on it.

So delighted to report that as of around 9:00 pm BST email popped into my inbox to the deleted me.com address. Checked my account settings and the me.com alias address has reappeared alongside the new icloud.com version. Touch wood all appears to be working to send and receive. No sign of lost emails though.

Now, while I can't fault the service from apple support guy, I musn't let sense of relief disguise the fact that Apple owe me and others affected a formal apology and recognition of costs incurred solely as a consequence of their blunder.

Good luck to the rest of you.

My Apple support rep called me a few minutes ago and told me that she had no update from the engineers, and that Apple has not acknowledged that this is a known issue. I asked how it seemed to be a known issue in other parts of the world. but not to North America. No idea. She offered to call me back Thursday with an update.

Since some others have been reporting that their @me.com mail is working again, I just tried mine again, but it's still not working.

Did I mention how unsatisfactory this is?

@David Bruce: I'm in California and the Senior rep I was escalated to confirmed this morning that it is a known issue. I guess they haven't yet gotten the word out to everyone. You may want to direct your rep to this discussion thread.

Also, I'm in the same boat -- happy that it's working for others, but mine is still not fixed yet.

Hi all, my broken alias is working again suddenly this morning. I can now see again in my accounts tab all the variants mac.com me.com and iCloud.com

No feedback or email from Apple rep though just me checking and discovering that it has been restored..

No very strong on communication these apple iCloud engineers apparently

I hope it stay this way with no more bad surprises.

Good luck to everyone else’s still waiting for the fix.

Cheers

I was just about to get in contact again with support today after noticing my alias of @me.com was gone last thursday, when I found out that after 5 days, everything is back to normal. Now I was hoping that maybe some emailmessages would come in from the past days, but I gues a lot of them are just lost. Anyway, more than happy that the problem is solved.

@me.com domain gone from alias; can't send or receive email; anyone else?
