Deleted Numbers in iOS 6

Hey all

I don't know if this problem came with the iOS 6 or it was there with the previous versions too, but here is what I'm facing.

I recently updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 and today I replaced the phone number of a contact with a new number. Somehow the old number is still there in my phone and still linked to the same contact. When I go into messages and type the contact's name, the number comes under 'Other'.

The strange part is that the phone is not showing the number in my Contact list.

Also when I delete a contact, the number is still there in the phone under the type 'Other'.

Anyone else experienced this problem? Is this some OS bug?

You see, the same ideas present in email application - once you sent email to someone, not stored in your contacts, you can see his name and email marked "other" in gray colour in some cases when you will fill "sent to" field, BUT (!!) this "other" email has a blue arrow at the right side - when you will press this arrow, you can store this email adress to your contacts, OR make a "Remove from recents" (see pictires below)

Why they not make blue arrow with possibility of permanent removing for "other" numbers in SMS applictaion? Who knows. mrg2507,can you ask Apple to make it?

Alright so I synced my phone with iTunes. Nothing happened. Still the same problem.

But I did notice something strange.

This is for sure an OS Bug. Today I changed the contact information of another contact, and surprisingly, the previous phone number of that contact doesn't come as 'Other' when I compose a message. Probably because I didn't send a text to that number since the day I started using my Phone.

Pretty strange bug, I hope Apple fixes this in the next upgrade.

Hi Rob

Thankfully you have already made this post. I was coming on here to make this post.

I had this happen to me last week when i renewed someones number in my contacts. There number is still visible in messages.

I spent an hour on the phone to Apple and the guy i was speaking to had never seen this problem before and tried loads of stuff with me and none of it worked.

I have once again just had a friend text me there new number and once again there old number even though ive deleted it is still sat there when i compose a new message.

This is the second bug ive found with IOS6 / Iphone 5 and am getting very close to returning this phone and going for the S3. Its full of bugs!!!!!!

Does anyone know how to get rid of an old number for a contact appearing on messages? I have deleted his details, added him back in my contacts with his new number but when going to messages and typing his name, both his new number comes up and old number as 'other'. Is there a way to get rid of that? I have done the standard delete contact, add new contact with his 1 new number, restart the phone but no luck and its quite annoying. Any advice please?

Yes, it would be good to encourage a fix for this -- it shouldn't be that hard to fully delete an old contact. I've got the same problem and it's a minor but annoying issue that has also resulted in a number of failed messages when I haven't noticed right away that the contact I'm trying to text is showing up as the 'other' ie old number instead of a more current one. Is there somewhere else we can report this? I heartily support that idea as it must be a simple job for clever programmers!

cheonweb, that doesn't work, which is the nub of the problem. If you 'create a fake contact' the old one is still stored in the phone somewhere else and will override the contacts list, showing up when you try to text the 'new' contact. The only way I've been able to get around it -- which is not really solving it at all -- is to store a contact I previously stored as, for example, "Sally Harris" as S.J. Harris, or else every time I tried to text Sally, I would get her old (wrong) contact, even though I had 'deleted' it. And it kept 'failing to deliver' at first before I caught on to what was happening. It's a pain, a minor one, but still a pain.

Maybe my English are not good. I will try again.

I have a Contact by name "Sally Harris" with number "1111111111".

Sally changes her number to "2222222222".

Im going to her contacts and i add her new number.

Then copy her old number and delete it.

Create a new contact by name "@@@old" and assign the old Sallys number that previusly copied.

Now i have a Contact "Sally Harris" with "2222222222" and "@@@old" with "1111111111".

What will be happens?
