    This is still a problem.

I'm having this problem too... Very frustrating!

I have the same problem. Deleted contacts are displayed as "other" when I want to compose a new message. I didnt have this problem before but itis happening in iOS 6. I have tried itunes, iMessage, icloud, all the sync possibilities, but none worked. It is a very annoying bug.

Same thing happening with me. So far the only fix I have found is restoring my phone back to factory settings and setting it up as NEW. I am hoping soon there will be an easier way

I am hoping to avoid a factory reset. Perhaps someone has another solution?

Nope, don't know of any other way.

I did report this issue as a software bug to Apple, hoping that they would look into it and resolve the matter.

I suppose we should wait for the next iOS 6 update to come.

Does anyone know how to get rid of an old number for a contact appearing on messages? I have deleted his details, added him back in my contacts with his new number but when going to messages and typing his name, both his new number comes up and old number as 'other'. Is there a way to get rid of that? I have done the standard delete contact, add new contact with his 1 new number, restart the phone but no luck and its quite annoying. Any advice please?

The only way (according to other posts) is to do a total phone restore back to factory settings, and set up as NEW. If you set up as an iTunes or iCloud restore the same thing will happen. I did it this weekend. Yes it is a pain but that is the only way I have heard.

Installed new iOS update today and it DID NOT resolve the issue.  This is a huge miss, Apple.

I did the same. Updated to iOS 6.0.1. 2 days back. The number is still there under the 'other' tag. This is very frustrating.

How about we all report this as a bug, a good number of people doing this would surely bring this to the attention of the concerned developers.

Yes, it would be good to encourage a fix for this -- it shouldn't be that hard to fully delete an old contact. I've got the same problem and it's a minor but annoying issue that has also resulted in a number of failed messages when I haven't noticed right away that the contact I'm trying to text is showing up as the 'other' ie old number instead of a more current one.  Is there somewhere else we can report this?  I heartily support that idea as it must be a simple job for clever programmers!

This is an incredibly anoyying bug. I've sent some important texts to wrong numbers before realising this was happening. Curses

I don't have this issue so i can't check, but...

Does anybody tried to assign the old deleted number to a new fake Contact?

I mean to create a new contact (lets say "Old Numbers") and assign the deleted number.

    What will happens?

  • aprilpopcorn Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

cheonweb, that doesn't work, which is the nub of the problem. If you 'create a fake contact' the old one is still stored in the phone somewhere else and will override the contacts list, showing up when you try to text the 'new' contact. The only way I've been able to get around it -- which is not really solving it at all -- is to store a contact I previously stored as, for example,  "Sally Harris" as S.J. Harris, or else every time I tried to text Sally, I would get her old (wrong) contact, even though I had 'deleted' it. And it kept 'failing to deliver' at first before I caught on to what was happening. It's a pain, a minor one, but still a pain.

Maybe my English are not good. I will try again.

I have a Contact by name "Sally Harris" with number "1111111111".

Sally changes her number to "2222222222".

Im going to her contacts and i add her new number.

Then copy her old number and delete it.

Create a new contact by name "@@@old" and assign the old Sallys number that previusly copied.

Now i have a Contact "Sally Harris" with "2222222222" and "@@@old" with "1111111111".

    What will be happens?
