iTunes Match subscription says expired

I just got the iPhone 5 and I have iTunes Match subscription until July of 2013. So plenty of time left and I have it turned on on my phone and when I'm on wifi it seems to work fine but if I'm on cellular data after about 20-30 minutes of using it it says my subscription is expired and everything stop working. I haven't tried to call apple yet but it's extremely frustrating. Anyone know what's going on?

Just got off the phone with AppleCare. They acknowledge that this is not a problem with my iPhone itself, and that it's likely a problem with iTunes Match. Restoring won't work since that won't affect your iTunes Match account. I suggest that everyone start calling AppleCare about this, and start making some noise. Apple doesn't really watch these discussions much, so talking about it here, although helpful to each other, does not actually address the problem with Apple. The tech that I just talked to is escalating the issue up to the group who handles iTunes Match. We need to give them some more examples.

Here's the run down of what I told AppleCare:

  1. The problem ONLY happens when I'm on a cellular network. In my case, it's AT&T.
  2. It never happens on my iPad (wifi only)
  3. It never happens on my Mac mini
  4. My MacBook Pro, which is the master system with all of my iTunes content is also unaffected.

One other thing that is worth mentioning is that I use iCloud as well, but with a different ID that transitioned over from .Mac to Mobile Me to iCloud. This started as a paid .Mac account, and is now a paid iCloud account. I use iCloud for synching my contacts, bookmarks, iWork files, my notes, reminders, and iPhone backups. It's possible that the iCloud account is conflicting with my Apple ID used for iTunes and Mac app store purchases, which is also used with iTunes Match. One problem here is that long time Apple customers like myself who started out with a .Mac account before the iTunes store launched still have the old account in place. It was logical to simply keep the .Mac/Mobile Me account and move it to iCloud as a paid account. I never thought about the possibility that this could be a problem moving forward. Apple sees this as two Apple IDs, even though I've never used the iCloud ID in association with any purchases that I've made on the iTunes store, or the Mac app store. Why this would only happen when I'm on a cellular network is a mystery to me. I'm wondering if any Verizon or Sprint customers have this problem. If so, please speak up. My data plan is a 4GB package that is part of the Mobile Shared plan.

@RobbB. Try turning off Match in settings and see if your music, that you downloaded to your phone, is actually there. It might be.

@KTGHowie.... Not related to iCloud if on a different ID. Mine is the same and I use iCloud for everthing you do. This started with iOS6. I've got an iPad2, as well, no problem with a subscription expired error but several of my Matched tracks are screwed up, playing only halfway, mixed with other tracks.

It might be related to AT&T but only on Apple's end. I don't think AT&T is causing the problem although everyone I've posted with here seems to be on AT&T. I'm on a grandfathered "unlimited plan" so data caps/usage doesn't seem to be a problem.

I've called and talked to AppleCare as well. I also encourage people to call them. Apple amazes me that they own these forums but never seem to find any of the problems noted here. And this one is growing.

Hopefully the Tier2 tech I talked to can actually get their engineering department to find this and get it fixed!

Unfortunately, it was not there. All of my music was gone from my phone. The only way I could get iTunes Match to work was to turn my phone to Airplane mode, then turn Airplane Mode off, then turn on iTunes Match. Now I have it off on my iPhone and synced all of my music back from iTunes. I'm afraid to turn it back on on my phone! It took over an hour to sync all my music back, and that was much quicker than downloading it all from iTunes Match on the phone.

You're probably right. I decided to call AT&T today, and I spoke to someone in iPhone tech support. The tech asked me to power the phone off without disconnecting the call first, and he then cleared something out of their system. He asked me to wait a minute or so before powering back on. After that, my iTunes Match worked normally all day on an LTE connection. This is looking increasingly like at AT&T issue, and not an Apple problem.

Just got an email from the Tier2 tech I've been working with. I won't post his name or email address but this is the text of the email.

James,

I just got response from iTunes Engineering. They are aware of the iTunes Match issue we are working on and they are working themselves on a resolution. They have also informed me that there should be a resolution in place with the next update to iOS 6. Engineering has asked us to wait until that period occurs.

If you do not feel like waiting, I understand. If you want a refund, please let me know and I can talk with the Engineer who has given me this information.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Let me know what I can do.

Thank you,

W.....

It does appear it's an issue with Match, and it might only be on AT&T's phones (there is some cell company customization for iOS) and there should be a resolution at some point soon. When that is, who knows. But, if you are unhappy with Match, or it's going to be a while until you renew (mine is next week) then I think you should ask for a refund.

So I spent all day with AT&T, Apple on the phone and the apple store. AT&T gave me a brand new sim card, and apple loaded my itunes match on one of their iphone 5s and it worked perfectly. Then they just gave me a new phone.

Loaded my backup and BAM, not working again. 😟

Currently trying to restore to a new phone without backup and seeing if something works on a completely new slate.

Does it still work when you are on cellular data only? Can you confirm? I would be half tempted to do a clean install, and NOT restore from a backup if it would fix the issue.

Also, this is probably a good time for Apple to start thinking about a free month of service since we have been having issues for the last two weeks and cannot listen to our music. Just sayin. 🙂
