USB-tethering issues (OS X 10.6.8, iTunes 10.7, iOS 6)

S.O.S. I've been getting sick for weeks now after every step I've taken using the group discussion I wasn't successful literally at all. I even clean install my laptop desperate to regain the connection. I really like the usb-tethering, please please help me on this??

I have MB white running SNOW LEOPARD with iTUNES 10.7 and iOS 6 iPhone 4s yet still not detecting USB on my Network under System Preferences.

I have a MBP 10.6.8 iTunes 11.0.1 with Iphone 5 6.1.3

Downloaded the kext utility, unzipped it and put the .app file into my applications folder, then I dragged the kext file from my laptop (AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext version 2.2.0), watched the utility does its magic.

easy peasy.

I rebooted with my plugged iphone via the usb cable and immediatly the system put up a window stating:

A new interface has been detected

the "iphone USB" network interface has not been set up. To set up this interface use network preferences". Proceeded into network preferences to see the setup and you can see your iphone on usb connection... (make sure your iphone's hotspot is set to usb during OSX reboot)

Thanks to all you guys and makers of the kext utility its now fixed! ;-)

Hello Hibernian56

I am working with:

Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on MacBookPro Intel (Core2Duo - 2,5GHz)

iTunes 11.02 which seems to be the most actual one

iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone 4 (no 4S).

and USB tethering wasn´t working...

first i tried to deleted the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext manually and reinstalled iTunes.

- no change

second i replaced the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext manually with a known good one (form an working machine) - no change.

Originally - after the reinstall of iTunes i had the Version 2.3.6 installed

So i gave the "Kext Util" a try, moved the 2.2.0-kext on that "Kext-Util"-Icon and that finally worked.

Thanks a lot to all of you out there!➕🙂➕

Kind reguard msch

p.s. therefore i think in my case the user-rights have been corrupt too!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I had the same problem now, in sep 2013!

iPhone 4s, iOS 7.0, iTunes 11.1.0.

I'd like to write some tag words on portuguese for people from my country easy find this post, that I took 6 hours googling...

Eu usei o kext 2.2.0. É necessario apenas utilizar um.

Até mais! 😉

Thanks to Hibernian56,

Why Apple does not solve this problem with an update? This is not normal. I lost a lot of time on the phone with technical support, I even moved to the Apple store and replace my iPhone. Nobody at Apple has told me a solution. The problem the same day using at home my iMac OS 10.7.5 and same result at work on MacBook Pro OS 10.7.5.

This situation is inacceptable and is still unresolved with Apple engineers.

Thank you Hibernian56and everyone else on this thread who added their experience. Finally able to tether by USB today after pulling out my hair for past few weeks!

I am using the following: iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.4, MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5, iTunes 11.1.3

I downloaded http://cvad-mac.narod2.ru/Kext_Utility and moved to Applications folder then opened and ran utility.

I then downloaded Version 2.2.0 http://db.tt/Fahk9VBe and dragged the downloaded icon onto the utility screen above and waited until it said 'enjoy'!

I rebooted MacBook Pro and iPhone and am happily tethering via USB again. Didn't even need to open network settings as others did above.

Thanks again community members.

C'mon Apple, time for a fix!

I am running on Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes 11.1.3 and (iPhone 4) 7.0.4, and have had the tethering problem as described in many posts above. Thanks to Hibernian56 and others in this thread I was able to resolve it a couple of months ago using the Kext utility, kext v.2.2.0, and verifying the permissions through Terminal. Finally, tethering worked again! Again, many, many thanks -- without these instructions there would have been no solution to the problem.

All this suddenly ended yesterday: tethering stopped working, the iPhone USB service in Network | System Preferences went 'stale', the USB service could not be replaced as the OSX did not recognise the iPhone (despite showing up in iTunes, i.e. the USB connection working), creating a new Location did not help. In other words, back to square one.

After several trial-and-errors and redoing what I had already done a couple of months ago but this time to no avail, I finally got tethering working by booting the iPhone. After reconfigurating the computer it seems to me that the culprit this time around was the phone. The point being: if you are stuck after having set up the computer as described in the other posts above, booting the phone and then booting your computer with the phone connected with the USB cable may lead the OSX to recognise the IPhone, and you are good again.

I have Macbook Pro on OS X 10.7, iTunes 11.3 and I planned to tether it to my iPhone 5s on iOS 7.1. USB connection was not an option in my Network Preference. I never did get a straight answer for the tech support/sales assistant from the Mac Store so I resorted to this forum. Good thing I followed Hibernian56's troubleshooting guide and now my computer is tethered to my iPhone while I'm posting this reply..

No fuss and simply beautiful!

Thank you and more power!

**** Simplified solution from above worked for me ****

Had this issue from a few days ago, firstly imessage stopped working and was stuck waiting for activation, sorted by resting network settings (not good as loose wifi settings and VPN's etc, but also manually removed Certs to be sure, reboot iPhone etc) sorry slightly off topic but thought that may have been the cause of tethering - not the case.

decided to rename the AppleUSBEthernetHostold.kext in system/library/extensions folder - as us can see has old added to the name - to be deleted in a day or two to allow for some reboots but works perfectly

went to apple site and downloaded latest iTunes (ver 12.what ever is there now)

no reboots or anything else, even had phone plugged using usb

installed itunes and just as it finished everything started working, but i am logged in at the tame as an administrator

Hope this helps everyone as I read a lot of articles with lots of "down load and use this" from some site which i didn't like the idea of.
