iPhone 5 can't send SMS - gets an error when sending SMS

People - I'm using a Sprint iPhone 5 with my local GSM chip. Everything works fine, except sending SMS.

All basic troubleshooting has been done: checked SMS settings, erased Network Settings, checked SMS Service # through *#5005*7672# and it is fine, restored the phone and re-checked everything above again... and nothing. :-(

Please help?

Hi Avi India,

Currently my dial assist is set to on.

And yes, I did manually save contacts with international dial code included. That came from my Nokia days which was not a smart phone and needed the code included so that's how it cam across to iPhone.

What I don't know (since this is my first iphone) what the dial assist setting was when I was having the issues. Perhaps in hind sight if I just turned the dial assist off, it would have worked.

But I did manually go through 700 contacts to remove the international code - in your case +91. This means that all numbers are now entered as they are dialled from a local in country telephone.

During my hours on the phone and in store with Apple and Telco noone mentioned the dial assist setting but I am glad I edited my contacts since now it works as it's meant to. And correct codes will come with dial assist set to on when I am overseas.

I wasted days of my life and hope it helps someone to avoid that assuming off course that your problem is identical.

ps. I did all my editing with full keyboard and iCloud. Now it is unlikely that I will ever lose my contacts. rgds Viber

Hi viber,

This is surely not our problem. The problem you had, I had with Nokia phones too, and I think this is a feature offered by the carrier, not by the phone. Meaning the carrier figures out that you are in roaming and try to call your country's number or a local number.

In our case, we all have local carriers SIM and using local number, so there is no need of country code. Using the same SIM and the same phone number, on any phone it works, but only on this Sprint iPhone 5 we can't send SMS.

The problem message "Not Delivered" appears after about 0.1 seconds, which means the phone doesn't even try to send the message through the carrier, but stucks in an internal error of some kind.

Thank you though for the suggestion, but this isn't the problem.

HEY GUYS...SOME POSITIVE NEWS....

in reply to my mail to the biggies...Tim Cook and gang, today i finally got a call from APPLE.

i did have a conversation with the Executive Relations person....i discussed at length with him the problem, i am people across the globe were facing.

he did ask me a couple of routine questions and then told me that he will be getting back to me next week.

in the mean time he did tell me that he would be sending me a mail, which will details a few instructions that may help me get the sms thing activated.

it did follow the steps but it didn’t work for me, so i did reply to them saying it didn’t work and I will wait for their call, but i am pasting the details below, just to see if it works for you guys.

- remove the current SIM from the iPhone (in the 'can't send SMS' state)

iPhone to be connected to wifi

- Insert the SIM that came with the iPhone

- Wait for iPhone to give pop up "iPhone is activated"

- Upon notification of successful activation, re-insert the SIM you are using

- This should resolve the issue now

I FINALLY HAVE A APPLE CASE ID, SO I AM EXTREMELY HOPEFULL THAT IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS IS RESOLVED

Hurray guys, keep writing in, it has to work!!!!!
