Mountain Lion USB Key

Hi Folks,

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro from Apple that came with 10.8 pre installed. My previous Apple laptop came with the OS and apps on a restore DVD but this one doesn't. How can I get a copy of Mountain Lion to put on a USB stick? The Mac App Store wont let me redownload it without paying again for it. Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Adam

Sure Barney. Here is a couple. I like the first one the best as there are instructions for mounting the Recovery HD while booted into OS X and stopping the Auto Install from continueing so you can save the Install File.

10.7: How to get a full Lion install disc for a new MacBook Air or Pro - Mac OS X Hints

How to make a bootable Lion install disc or drive | Macworld

Basically it is all about SAVING the original downloaded install file (Files in a Package).

You can do it from booting to the Recovery HD and pointing the install to an External drive but you have to watch the download and when it finishes and Auto Reboots to start the install you need to Disconnect the external so you save the downloaded Install file.

Then I have found This program the best for making the USB install Thumb drive.

I don't believe there is any way to do that with a pre-loaded system. You can create an external recovery HD with the Recovery Disk Assistant: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848

The other option is to just clone your current system using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

Yes there is a way, actually several ways, to Get, Save and Make a USB Install thumb drive of Mt Lion.

It is the same from Mt Lion as it was for Lion. Google is your Friend.

As I can't find an example for a Pre-loaded system, can you please post a link to a tutorial that describes how to make an install disk, usb, whatever from a factory pre-installed version of Lion or Mountain Lion.

Since the pre-installed versions are not downloadable, how do you make an install disk without the installer?

If there is a method to interrupt the Recovery HD reinstall where you can capture the installer prior to it running, then I suppose that would provide a method. Again, I haven't seen one that describes how to do that.

There is no "original downloaded install file", on a preinstalled ML machine.

Sure there is. You can even boot to the Internet Recovery system to get the original OS X version that came on your system. It may be of the newest POINT release, like 10.8.2 instead of 10.8.0, but it is still Mt Lion.

Same goes for Lion. If your system came with lion Pre-Installed Internet Recovery has to give you Lion as a download even if you have upgraded to Mt Lion.

Most of the time Apple doesn't update the Recovery systems, the built in one or the Internet one, for several weeks after a New Point Release. So it all depends on when your system was made and what Point Release it came with. If you bought a Mac a month or more after the last point release and before a newer point release you can get that specific point release install download using the methods I linked to.

I know about internet recovery, it seemed as if you were recommending the (correct) procedure for an upgraded machine, (which more people should use). Just so long as the user does not use this package to install ML on a different machine.

Well where and how they use it is up to them. I have no control, nor do I want to have any control, over how other people conduct themselves in this respect. I suspect Apple has some built in system that would stop the install of Lion or Mt Lion obtained from a system they came preinstalled on from installing on an older system that came with an earlier version of OS X.

Don't know and really don't care.

Take care.

Just pointing out that we are not recommending stealing copies of OSX, that's all. ML (preinstalled) can only be used on the machine it came with, ML (purchased) may be used on all machines you own, or control (whatever that means, I have 37 machines of various ages, can I install 37 copies of ML on them from the same purchase?)

Since Apple has gone to the Download system and do not offer Multi Pack purchases, like they did with Snow Leopard DVDs, I suspect they really don't care. If you have X # of Mac computers that can run Lion or Mt Lion they figure they already made all their profit off the computers so have at it installing on all the Macs you have.

Well that may be true, but the terms of license are as they are and I try to adhere to them, I just clone an example of each machine type (I only have 3 machine types, MBP 13" from 2008 to 2011, Mini's and 1 iMac) to an external disk and use it to update the rest, (all machines run identical software so this is quick & simple), and I did purchase some copies of ML, maybe I'm legal but I am not sure.

There is one further thing to add to this. You can download Mounttain Lion from the App Store without paying again - you need to identify to Apple that you have a machine that cam with Mountain Lion. Since you recently bought the MacBook Pro the serial number will allow Apple to know this. I forgot where I did this but somewhere in support it tells you how to do the rest. You will receive an email with a code that can be entered on the App Store and viola you are away.

Once more this is not true, please stop posting misinformation..... If (and only if) you bought ML from the app store you may install it on any and all of the Macs you own, if you bought a new Mac with ML installed you may NOT install it on another machine, clear?

Csound1,

You have completely misunderstood what I am saying. I am NOT suggesting that it will install on another machine only the one for which it is licenced. The reason this was required was that the transfer of files from my old machine caused Lion to replace Mountain Lion and I needed to upgrade it back to Mountain Lion.

And you don't need to go to the App store to DL ML if it came on your system. Your instructions are misleading and IMHO incorrect.
