Is there dust inside camera lens of iPhone 5?
I bought my new iPhone 5 on 28th of September from a local Telco.
Today I noticed inside the camera lens there is dust.
I'm very disappointed 😊
iPhone 5, iOS 6
I am having this problem too. Brought iphone5 from the Apple New Zealand Store last week and it turned up and had a big peice of lint is all I can say inside the camera. A good 2mm long. Apple sent me a replacement phone today but this one is full of dust and the case has a dent/scratch on it above the volume switch!
Am seriously fed up now. If the next replacement comes like this its going back for a refund and I'll buy something else!
I must say i have recieved a replacement because of a different error and my replacement as yet has no dust in lense unlike my original but am not holding my breath that the new one will not develop this fault as i am quite certain my original never had dust out of the box itsa shame apple are appearing to.get so lazy because there are lots of other amazing fones out there i love apple stuff but with there limitations and now there build quality appears to be slipping they are starting to fall short of other phones iv got a samsung note that my little boy of 2years uses to watch cartoons on and the software with its lack of limitations and great features far exceeds the iphone five book your ideas up apple i do still love you but im thinkin of filing for devorce
I've had my iPhone 5 since October and the dust is just now starting to show up in my photos... very frustrating. I have cleaned the lens every way I know how. Think I'll head down to Apple Store tomorrow and see what they say. Will let this group know...
BTW this picture is not zoomed or cropped. That's the whole image.
No, the dust/dirt is happening during the manufacturing process (this same problem also happens on the screen itself.) Dust or dirt gets in before the phone is put together, that's how it's happening! I recommend anyone who purchases a smartphone to inspect their phone before deciding to keep it. This means physically inspect the build quality, buttons, inspect the screen during boot up for dead pixels or other screen defects, then download a dead pixel test app from the app store (I just use the colored flash light app myself) and run tests to see if any dead pixesl on the screen...this will also show if any dirt or dust is under the glass as well. I put my phone through numerous tests, if it fails it goes right back!
There is no quality control at Apple! My last iPhone 4S I had replace 5 times at Target for these same issues, eventually you will get a phone that is perfect.
I've read the same about dust getting in during manufacturing, but I can tell by some of my older photos that the dust was not there when I first got the phone. I can see it getting progressively worse in my newer photos.
I do not use a case and the phone typically sits on my desk, in my front pocket, or in a cup holder in my car. It has never been dropped.
I took the phone to the Apple Store, showed them the photo above and they replaced the phone no questions asked.

I returned my first iPhone 5 for dirt on the sensor and tested my new one right away and there were no dark spots in my photos, so no dust on the sensor when I got it. Now, several months later, I have three darkened spots indicating dust on the sensor. I wonder if dust could be getting in through the noise cancelling microphone port next to it.
I had my iPhone 5 replaced because of dust under the lens. Apple Support didn't say anything about it being my fault, they just quickly replaced the phone. I've had the new phone for less than 2 weeks and I bought a LifeProof case to try and avoid it happening again, but it happened anyway. I agree with those that think it may be the mic next to the lens as the first few days I had the replacements phone, I left the plastic cover that came with it on until I could get a case. It looks like I'm going to have to return this one...
I had the same issue. I live in Japan and they just replace my iPhone 5 without asking any questions. Seems they have this dust thing for other users also. I saw 2 other users changes their iPhone due to dust in camera..!!
Hope US do the same..!!
I forgot. They took only 1 hour to replace it.!! :)
Dust behind the lense is covered by warranty in all countries . Please call AppleCare or get an appointment in a store to get the device exchanged .
Hope this info helps 🙂
I have just exchanged the fourth ip5. The first and second all have this spek on the sensor, the third one has a couple of burnt pix on the sensor.
I am quite dissappointed with the QA from Apple this time with ip5.
Add me to the list.. Just 6 days old i5 and the dust is beyond what u can tolerate. I use a suction pump ( baby nostrils suction ) and it reduce the dust a bit. Can we get replacement for this? From Malaysia
Apple will replace it. I'm on my 3 rd iPhone 5
I have an iPhone 5 that I got the day they came out. About a week ago, I started noticing that what I thought was a spec of dust on something I was taking a picture of was in fact on all my pics. So I looked at the camera and couldn't believe what I was seeing : tons of dust ! Tried to clean it with air duster can, spraying around the power button, mic and camera lens, nothing changed !
I'm really mad. I've had a case on this phone maybe a week or 2 after I received it, but like for a lot of cases, it doesn't cover the power button and certainly not the camera lens itself. Don't know what to do, I don't want Apple to give me a refurb phone, mine works 100% besides the camera dust.

I'm on my 3rd iPhone 5 because of this issue. My usage and environment is normal, either on my desk or in my pocket. Seems there is an issue with the gasket around the lens. Apple has stood behind their product so far.
