AT@T data overage after IOS 6 update.

My iphone 4s is using data and no apps are running and I have all services shut down. I have AT&T. I called the and they offered no solution but did refund $55.00 of my bill. Is anyone else having this problem on AT&T? I saw that Verizon customers got hit with data overages and Apple wrote a quick software fix but nothing for AT&T.

I check my usage rate by downloading a data monitor and in 20 minutes of my phone doing nothing it had used 70 KB's of data. This is very dtarnge because after 2 years I have never exceeded my data limit.

I've had the same issue, I'm on AT&T. iPhone 4S, high data usage even when I'm on wi-fi at home. I used 150 meg in 2 days and never used the data outside of my house. I've had a Blackberry and a HTC with AT&T and same wi-fi at home and never had a data issue. Spoke with AT&T and they do know there is an issue and put me in contact with Apple. Apple went thru the usual things with me and that did not help. Last resort they told me to reset my iPhone. I did that and set it to "new" phone and blew out everything on my phone. It actually worked, I was not getting any extra data usage for about 3 days, then it started getting data usage again while at home on wi-fi. Had to turn off my cellular data again! Will be calling back AT&T and Apple to complain! AT&T did refund my $20 overage last month.

Really? This thread just stopped before the end of the year? Does that mean this problem has been corrected?

HARDLY!

My daugter's iPhone 4 has been racking up data at a rate or 24MB per night (while she sleeps!) and WHEN all the Wi-Fi bars are lit up AND Cellular Data is turned off !!!

AT&T has been a good egg here and refunding, but not way to tell how long that is going to keep.

Apple opened a support case and threw out your run off the mill, well rehearsed suggestions,

1. Kill background apps

2. Turn off cell data

3. Restore iOS6.

None of that helps!

So, for a few months now, she has not been able to enjoy her phone in fear of running past her 200MB, WHICH HAPPENS ANYWAYS!!! What gives?

The phone now stays 90% of the time with Cell data turned off and she still get the automated messages well before the billing cycle ends that she is running out... *** !!!!

My next stop is the FCC web site. See if there are any filings on this. If there aren't any and after I wipe my "In shock" face, I will be filling a case with them. I urge you all to do the same.

The only problem i continue to have is anything related to video, the phone tends to lose the wifi connection and connects to data then never reconnects to wifi even when the signal comes back. The iOS update at the end of the year fixed all 5 of my iPhones. What i don't understand and maybe someone can explain is the data exchange that occurs in the evening, what exactly is that for and who's is it? It's usually a few kb but i have seen it in the mb range.

The only other suggestion i can offer and didn't see you mention is to turn off icloud and reset your network settings. Also turn off everything in location services under system services except for cell network search, turn off all notifications except for the basic messages and phone. Good luck, personally switching to the HTC One as soon as it comes out.

I just hope that IOS 7 fixes this issue. Even dho I have the " Unlimited " data I hate that ATT throttle me down after I reach 3GB, so I try not to use it a lot I dont want to get a slow network.

I'am at 3.6gb now so now I just dont care any more and use it all day streaming.

I believe that if I get a different smart phone (Samsung Galaxy?) this wont happen.

Shortly after upgrading to IOS 6, I ran the App Store app, and it recommended I install some free Apple apps, one of which was the Podcast app, which I had not installed before the upgrade. After installing these free Apple apps, I ran Podcast to see what it was, but after reading the splash screen, I went no further. A few hours later I was getting warning alerts from AT&T about getting close to my cellular 200 MB data limit even though I was connected to Wi-Fi, and I was not using the phone. This was never a problem under IOS 5. So, having quickly found this thread on the Internet, I did a hard reset and deleted the Podcast app. It's been about an hour, and my cellular data usage has stopped increasing, so this may have fixed it for me.

I started experiencing this problem last night. I typically use about half a gigabyte per month, but I apparently used about 4 gigabytes while I was sleeping and my iPhone 4 was connected to my home wi-fi. AT&T has said that they will not charge any overage fees, but they won't tell me which web sites are serving me the data. Apparently I have to get a subpoena to find out what my own phone is doing.

I got a few data monitor apps, I rebooted the phone, I removed and reinstalled the Podcasts app, and I turned off the autodownload feature of the podcast app, and I denied it access to the 3G connection. We'll see what happens. So far, data usage is nill, as it should be.

AT&T was, of course, saying that my phone is busted, and that I'm eligible for an upgrade. When I insisted that I need to know who is serving the data so that I can find out if my phone has been compromised, they got very defensive. ***? If they know what's going on, why don't they just tell me what to do?

And, of course, I get the overage warning text messages at 4 am, as if that's going to help. Even worse, the text message informing me of of 90% within quota allowance arrived AFTER a text message warning me of 75% usage of my overage!

This makes me think this is an AT&T issue. Has anyone else eperienced really screwy service with respect to warning texts?

Yup. Pretty much verbatim what I have seen.

AT&T also is "going out of their way" and advance my upgrade eventhough i have still a few months left.

They seem a lot more eager to sell me a new iPhone5 than trying to figure out the problem. Which leads me to believe they already know what the problem is and apple may be on it as well. Also supporting this, apple service manager never contanted me back like the promised me she would.

It is obvious there is a lot more revenue in selling new hardware than fixing older broken one.

Except, of course, there is nothing wrong with my phone. It is almost positively the Apple podcasts app that went on the fritz and downloaded repeatedly. This bug has been well documented. I've been monitoring usage for a day now, and denying cellular access to the app seems to have done the trick.

I will start filing complaints with official agencies against Apple and AT&T. This is criminal behavior.

A software bug that costs a customer upwards of $40 in over usage fees is not cool!

Can you say "class action"?

I have been following my data usage with AT&T for a while now, and I can tell you that within the last 12 months, I have seen my data usage double, even though I have not had any real change in my usage (that I can distinctly remember that is). I went back to the AT&T OLAM site and checked my data usage. Before the change, I averaged about 800MB/month with my low being around 400MB, and my high being around 1200MB. After the usage change, I have been averaging about 1100MB/month with the low being about 700MB, and the high being about 1800MB. Here is the kicker for you, the change in my usage didn't happen when I got my iPhone 5 on Sept 21, it happened in mid June, about 3 months before. There was no distinguishable change in usage after Sept 21 as compared to my usage from June - Sept. This tells me that my change in data usage can't be blamed on iOS 6, since my usage growth happened 3 months before iOS 6 was released. From Sept on, my data usage has been consistent with my usage from June to Sept. If you are seeing a huge change in your data usage, I would wager that it is an app you are using, or an iOS setting that you have that is causing your increase in data consumption.

Some of the obvious things to check are the diagnostics data being sent to Apple, using cellular data for downloading app updates, iTunes Match, app Purchases, FaceTime, or PodCast downloads (in the podcasts app). Also doing any video or audio streaming over cellular data (like YouTube, Netflix, Stitcher, Pandora, etc.) will consume large amounts of data. If you leave apps open in the background that are add based, some apps will refresh the screen to update the ads even if the iPhone is in sleep mode. If you are not on wifi, this could eat through large amounts of cellular data as well.

May 5, 2013 1:12 PM in response to Spearman1ca

You'd loose that wager. What we are discussing here is the data consumption while no apps are running in the background, the phone is on a docking station, while on full wifi, and cell data turned off.

Under these conditions I get my first warning text ONE WEEK after a new billing cycle begins.

At the end of the cycle AT&T has already tacked on 4 new data overage charges to my account.

And there is not a darn thing I can do about it!

Any other thoughts? 🙂

For what it's worth, here is the dispute letter I sent to AT&T after having them waste my time over the phone yesterday. Feel free to file it with with whoever your provider is.

Hello,

I am writing to followup on my inquiry into the excessive data usage that occurred on my phone on the night of May 4. I am contesting all of this usage because I was asleep, my phone was charging, and it was connected to my home wi-fi during that time. The problem seems to be a bug in Apple's Podcasts app. I am contesting all of the overage charges until such time as a complete and definitive determination has been made regarding this usage.

This determination must include the type of data that was transferred (html pages, mp3 files, etc.), the internet sources from which the data was delivered (specific URLs), and the reasons why this happened over 3G even though my phone was connected to my home wi-fi.

Either AT&T or Apple is responsible for this data usage. I had nothing to do with it, and I had specifically disallowed it in my phone settings.

Thank you very much.
