iOS 6: Music playback issues?

After upgrading to ios 6 I've found an extremely annoying problem regarding music playback. iOS 6 doesn't seem to remember where you last paused a playlist, album, etc... it always starts back at the last place you originally started it.

For example:

I have an album with 12 songs. I start it on track 4, listen to a few songs on the way to work. Pull the headphone cord once I arrive and Music pauses as expected. When I return to the car for the drive back home, instead of resuming playback where I left off, it starts back at track 4 again.

Another example:

Let's say I want to listen to an artist, so I go to "All Songs" and just hit shuffle so it plays randomly. I listen to a few tracks here and there, skip a few, all is good. Just as with albums, when I stop playback and resume later it will always return back to the first song played, and play then back in the same order again.

Am I missing a setting or something? I searched the settings app may times and can't find anything even close. Does it have anything to do with me pausing the player by removing the headphone cord? Could it be some app I am using between pauses?

Never had issues with ios 5, so this is defenitely software related. iOS 5 used to remember where I last played music over days -- even if I were to watch videos on the iPhone or listen to Pandora between music playback.

This has been a huge issue for me as well. Everyone tells me that I'm being ridiculous and that it's not a problem, but to me it is. I listen to a music during my commute to/from work, and for at least 5 hours while in the office. I keep trying to find someone - anyone - who has had this problem, but everytime I ask about it, people look at me like I have arms attached to my head. Almost all of my friends have iPhones of various types, and none of them have this issue. As many people previously mentioned, a Google search for the issue comes up with bupkis.

I even took it to the mighty Fifth Avenue Apple store in Manhattan to get some genius help - and was promptly told that they don't know anything about software issues (thus giving the geniuses a less-than-stellar 1-4 record for being able to help me when I go to them with problems).

I am hoping for a legit software fix with iOS 7. Otherwise, I think I've got to move elsewhere, because I can't handle a company that makes such crappy software (compared to how amazing and perfect it used to be) and then doesn't offer any fixes for a year (or ever).

Can't believe a clear problem that was raised months ago has still not been addressed by Apple.

I reluctantaly upgraded my 4S to iOS6 the other day, but this problem is driving me nuts. Terrible for audio books and long play tracks like radio shows. And this is exactly why I reluctant to upgrade: every time I do, it seems like the trade off for improvements is having other, reliable features removed! Come on Apple - someone at least address/aknowledge the issue on this string. There have been enough posts about it.

Same problem here. Has happened for almost a year. I even went to the apple store and replaced the phone. It was great for a while, but now every day I get in my car and it starts at the same track as the trip before. That is, unless I re-shuffle the playlist, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of bluetooth audio? I think the memory statement has some merit, although I kill all backgrounded apps frequently. Been waiting a long time for a fix, don't let us down, Apple.

I've found that if you open the iPod app and wait for the screen to refresh (display the current track\time), THEN pause, it will resume play on the correct track, but still starts that track over.

It's no help for audiobook users that have long\contiguous files, but for those of us with playlists it works around the frustration of listening to the same songs over and over.

I'm not sure why that would be, I have this problem on three distinct iPhone 5s on the latest iOS.

@jimmyknuckles and @CHIKouNe

seems like:

@CHIKouNe uses itunes to manage the music, including restoring from a backup

@jimmyknuckles do you use icloud or itunes?

the support community seems to have to do apple's debugging job and I would need others to test the theory.

like @CHIKouNe, I have itunes manage my devices (no cloud for me) and I do not have the problem of playlists starting from the beginning (could it also be a smart/static playlist related? I use smart playlists almost exclusively and only play albums/songs directly on occasion).

It might help if everyone who has the problem regularly or not answer these questions. Maybe we could try to figure out a common root cause.

This is my list for my iphone5/ios6 that has become my ipod:

specific device?

iphone 5, 64gb

specific ios?

6.1.3 (have not upgraded to 6.1.4)

icloud or itunes to manage the ios device?

itunes

if itunes, wifi sync or usb?

usb

if itunes, sync ALL or only what can fit?

all music contained within several static playlists plus what is in 5 or 6 smart playlists (whatever is in specific playlists)

upgrade from ios5 or ever only saw ios 6?

came from the factory with ios6

restored from another device or used as a brand new device?

restored from another device

if restored from another device, what was the last ios from that previous device?

never upgraded my 3gs, which would have made it ios5.1.something

on average how many apps are used on a daily basis?

3 (safari, moovit, ios6 music player app)

type of playlist

many smart playlists that funnel into one main "radio" like playlist

I anyone can think of any more types of questions to ask, please add them to this list. Hopefully we can find a common cause... it may be as silly as switching from wifi sync to usb sync.

Same issue here on iPhone 4s ios6.1.3, and added note:

-Using another app to listen to audio (Podcasts/Pandora)

-Pausing it by either the pause button or unplugging the headphones

-Leave it alone for as little as ten minutes.

-Come back, and double clicking the home button to bring up the most recent music player, will default to "music" and start at the beginning of whatever song was last used on that app, usually confusing me as to why it's not the podcast I was listening to moments ago.
