iOS 6: Music playback issues?

After upgrading to ios 6 I've found an extremely annoying problem regarding music playback. iOS 6 doesn't seem to remember where you last paused a playlist, album, etc... it always starts back at the last place you originally started it.

For example:

I have an album with 12 songs. I start it on track 4, listen to a few songs on the way to work. Pull the headphone cord once I arrive and Music pauses as expected. When I return to the car for the drive back home, instead of resuming playback where I left off, it starts back at track 4 again.

Another example:

Let's say I want to listen to an artist, so I go to "All Songs" and just hit shuffle so it plays randomly. I listen to a few tracks here and there, skip a few, all is good. Just as with albums, when I stop playback and resume later it will always return back to the first song played, and play then back in the same order again.

Am I missing a setting or something? I searched the settings app may times and can't find anything even close. Does it have anything to do with me pausing the player by removing the headphone cord? Could it be some app I am using between pauses?

Never had issues with ios 5, so this is defenitely software related. iOS 5 used to remember where I last played music over days -- even if I were to watch videos on the iPhone or listen to Pandora between music playback.

So I noticed the following: My iPod App never forgot where I stopped my music. But I always leave the ipod app running and just pause by using the headset remote control. It also remembers the song and position when I restart the phone.

But I figured, everytime I plug it into my computer, the shuffle playlist starts with #1 again, with the currently paused track. I have no idea why, because I do not synch it, not even open iTunes. I will check if this also applies when I use the wall plug to charge.

After I took off all music and synched it onto the iPhone again, it at least does not repeat the same 12 tracks anymore, but like I said, everytime I charge via computer, the current position of the shuffle playlist, whether 8 or 12 or 20 switches to 1 and so a new shuffle playlist starts (which will occure repeated tracks within less than 30-50 tracks which is annoying when you have more than 600 to choose from). I cannot exactly say when this appeared first, but it's been with 6.1.3. as well as 6.1.2.

With nearly 15,000 views and 123 replies to this thread, why hasn't Apple fixed this issue?

Not sure how anyone else feels, but I am getting VERY frustrated with updates that do not address the outstanding broken issues. I don't need Passbook or location based Reminders (since the mapping function does not work properly, neither do location based reminders...i.e. reminders that go off 5 miles AFTER I have left the location), I need basic functionality that works correctly every time.

Like I tell everyone, I love my Apple devices, but I'm less than satisfied with the software updates.

Also got the same problem here very flustrating to say the least, didn't originally do it on my iPhone 5 64GB direct from Apple but since recent update it does it constantly. I can even come out of Music Player check email go back in and it has forgotten the song that was playing and just displays the full track list from the Album.

As stated above numerous times can't believe this has been addressed.

Love my Apple gear but it's losing its shine, after purchasing a iPad 3 64GB on launch day only for the 4 to follow 7 months later, then the numerous other daft little issues like the one in this thread, I will be seriously looking at other suppliers going forward if issues continue and things don't get resolved. Dare I say Samsung and the S4 looks nice as does the HTC One with the dual front facing stereo speakers. Where as previously I've just gone straight for Apple products.

I think there are so many things so fundamentally wrong with just about everything released by apple since about sept last year, words fail me.

I have several really annoying problems with the music playback as well.

ios 6.1.3

iphone 5

I though once the player had backed up a couple songs after I paused it and did other things on the phone, so I naturally skipped ahead to the point it should have remained and didn't think too much of it again other than "how can a company with so much money continue to put out such garbage again and again?".

I caught it again a second time, but the second time I noticed the on screen "player" was not playing the same song than the one that actually was playing.

I think now there's a music player controller app that runs in the foreground and the real music player runs in the background (the background one won't get swapped out if you run an app that needs to run, but the foreground app will). What happens I think is the foreground app loses sync with the actual player app and doesn't get updated.

Now that I think about it, I think it might be related to a buggy feature that tries to "sync your current position to the cloud"... I might want to see if I can turn that feature off... although I might already have done that, but I can't remember.

Another playback issue that is easy to replicate (for me anyway) and annoys the **** out of me is around a device reboot:

- create a smart playlist (e.g. 400 songs) and sync with ios 6

- play a song from that playlist and toggle the shuffle option on and off several times, make sure it's on when you're done

- play a number of songs (e.g. 10, 20, whatever). It now correctly says "playing x of y"

- pause

- power down

- power up

- go back into music player

- it claims shuffle is on, but it's not

- sometimes, when I toggle the shuffle it toggles between "1 of" and will usually jump around between some random number before finally settling down (e.g. 20/400 -> 1/400 -> 57/400 -> 1/400 -> 62/400 -> 1/400 -> 71/400 -> 1/400 -> 71/400 -- at that point, I guess the real non shuffle index is 71, in which case I toggle a couple more times to make sure and make sure shuffle really is on)

So as the saying goes, it's not a bug, it's a feature.... Only, for some reasons, features seem to recur / linger in appleland.

I waited with the iOS6 update for my iPod Touch 4G, so that all the bugs would be out...

but no... this is one mayor annoyance!

I actually use my iPod to listen to music, it's supposed to be a music player and now my old mp3 2GB player seems more sophiticated!

1 - fix the playlist thing, so that it wil ALWAYS restart from the song that was playing when you pauzed

2 - while you're at it, I liked it on my old mp3 player that with "shuffle" and "repeat" on, once all the songs in the list were played -> the next "shuffle" list would be different. Bothered me that on my iPod it would start up the "same shuffle list" as the previous repeat round...

Don't know if #2 is already possible (let me know if so 😉)...

come on, you're freaking Apple FIX THIS... IT IS ANNOYING AS.... well nails on a chalkboard

(I don't understand why I get a whole tiresome firmware update for some languages I have nothing with... but this hasn't been fixed since well back in 2012!)

This problem annoys the crap out of me multiple times a day. Yes Apple, I really do want to hear the same songs over and over again. The one feature that I use most on my phone doesn't work and that just *****.

I was the second person to post in this thread back in October. I have sent feedback about the issue twice (as others have as well) - nothing. Doesn't Apple have dedicated teams that work on the "base package" apps? If they do for the Music app, the whole department should be reprimanded (or fired).

PLEASE FIX!!! The gorgeous screens on the Galaxy S4 and HTC One are looking more gorgeouser each day.

Ok, so I've found a workaround that seems to be consistant. I haven't had this happen in over two months now. It's not the most convenient but it works. Here's what I do:

Open the iPod. Select the music player. Click play. It plays. When I'm done, I open the iPod again (the long way - slide to unlock). I pause the song. I then lock the iPod.

When I come back, regardless of the amount of time, it always resumes on the same song. The only issue I get is if it's a long period of time between use, the resumed song will start at the beginning again. That's a small issue that I can deal with.

While this isn't as convenient as double clicking the home button and pushing pause, or just pulling out the earphones to automatically pause, it's a workable solution.

Hope this helps!

Same problem here and it's annoying as h*ll to not be able to use the native music playing app. Hate not remembering playback position. The only tolerable solution I've found is one app (tried half a dozen) that remembers the playback position - STICKY PLAYLIST by Mysterious Trousers. I don't like the look or controls as much as the native app but seems to work.
