This happens every time I try to unzip a zip file. I'll doubleclick the file and the Archive Utility opens and says it is expanding, but the progress bar just keeps moving those stripes and nothing happens. I have to force quit Archive Utility. This happens EVERY time and I have stuff I need to unzip. Any ideas?
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
I am having the same issue. Looks like repairing permissions and restarting is the fix.

There is no need to install third-party apps
Problem solved:
delete plist, restart. New working plist will appear.

I am experiencing exactly the same problem. Fortunately I also have Stuffit Expander on my Mac and I used that to unzip the archives. It had no problems and the unzipped files are fine.
I get this bug too. Funny, it used to work...
Opening with iPack (3rd party solution) wroks perfectly.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". Then go to Preferences folder and delete com.apple.archiveutility.plist. Now try.

Opened Disk Utility, repaired permissions on the startup disk, restarted and hey presto, Archive Utility is back.
Same issue here. Will try the "repair utility" solution as mentioned above.
Repairing disk permissions and rebooting is the only thing that seems to work for me. This happens constantly, and is a huge pain in the butt.

Repairing permission is not required, just kill appleeventsd process.

The terminal command:
sudo killall -KILL appleeventsd
.. will work - for a while.
Sometimes even:
killall Finder
... will work - for a while.
But it remains an OS X bug.
