This happens every time I try to unzip a zip file. I'll doubleclick the file and the Archive Utility opens and says it is expanding, but the progress bar just keeps moving those stripes and nothing happens. I have to force quit Archive Utility. This happens EVERY time and I have stuff I need to unzip. Any ideas?
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
I am experiencing exactly the same problem. Fortunately I also have Stuffit Expander on my Mac and I used that to unzip the archives. It had no problems and the unzipped files are fine.
I too am experiencing the same issue since moving to Mountain Lion. As Keith says, Stuffit Expander does work on every file that Archive Utility freezes on, which rules out file corruption as the problem.
I get this bug too. Funny, it used to work...
Opening with iPack (3rd party solution) wroks perfectly.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". Then go to Preferences folder and delete com.apple.archiveutility.plist. Now try.

This worked!!
Just opened Disk Utility, chose my boot disk, and then under First Aid, clicked "Repair Disk Premissions" - Reboot and works perfect.

Opened Disk Utility, repaired permissions on the startup disk, restarted and hey presto, Archive Utility is back.

I had the problem with the Archive Utility as described above. Deleting the preferences file did the trick for one file. Then, it froze again. Repairing the permissions eliminated the problem completely. Thanks for the tip.
Repairing disk permissions and rebooting is the only thing that seems to work for me. This happens constantly, and is a huge pain in the butt.

I am having same issue with Archive Utility. Tried fixes listed below, but nothing has worked. It consistently freezes while unarchiving, requiring me to Force Quit the application. My files that I compress using Archive Utility do open correctly using Stuffit expander.
