10.8.2 - Trackpad freezing - kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceGetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0x0 returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying

I recently upgraded to 10.8.2 and now find that my trackpad seems to freeze up on occasion. I started noticing the following message in the system log:

kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceGetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0x0 returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying

This message occurs 4 seconds, so you can imagine the log fills up quickly. If I touch the trackpad there is a lag in response and when it actually responds the messages stop flooding the log. This scenario occurs when I am 'docked' at work and using my magic mouse as my main pointing device.

I am running a 15inch MBP, early 2011, 8 gig of RAM. Upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion.

Anyone know why this issue is occuring?

Hi all,

My trackpad stopped working as well, and it was persistent even after rebooting my machine.

Machine info:

- 13 inch Macbook pro (Mid 2010)

- 16 GB RAM

- OSX 10.9

Solution:

In my case, the problem was solved by putting the machine to sleep (folding it), then connect my Android phone with a USB cable, and then wake up the machine again (opening it), while having it connected. The trackpad worked again immediately.

Potential cause:

As a professional android developer, I frequently have android devices connected to my mac, and at times.. I pull out a device after having put my mac to sleep. This could potentially result in some sort of USB deadlock, which causes the MultiTouch USB driver to fail. I'm currently trying to reproduce the problem. So far I haven't run into the problem again, but I'll keep you guys posted on identifying the cause.

For now I hope the solution above also works for you guys.
