IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the Apple Product.

this is what i've found out from the following website :

http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ipad-english-mein.html

so it is not advisable to purchase an iPad from another country!

Even then it's probably wise to purchase on ones' own country. I've seen mixed reports of international warranty on WiFi-only iPads, with some users reporting no problems getting service in another country while others reporting being denied. So I recommend that people should not count on the warranty being international even for the WiFi iPad and buy in their own country that unless there's a really good reason not to.

Need to be very careful about this issue as it is multi faceted.

Firstly, Apples warranties for mobile products are subdivided by REGION - not COUNTRY. If you go to Apples Waaranty website http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ipad-english-mein.html

the first thing it asks you to do is say what REGION you purchased the item in (North America, Asia, Europe etc). Almost invariably, within this REGION you will be covered (Ipad bought in uk but used in Germany so covered by the European REGION would work etc etc).

There are real problems with a lack of international stadards when it comes cellular device networks making it virtually impossible to have a truly international waranty. As previous posters have mentioned, if the Apple store you take your mobile device to has a replacement that runs on the same cellular frequencies etc then they will most likely swap it out for you if you can prove purchase etc. However, more often than you would think, the standards of the local cellular networks are completely different making the ability to stock a broad enough range of replacements infeasibe and very costly. This is why so many people fall foul of international waranties for items bought from another country.

As has also been mentioned, if you stick to a WiFi only iPad, you will probably get cover worldwide without question as the product is pretty standard worldwide (baring specific language settings etc). Similarly, most laptops will pass under the waranty radar too. It is iPhones and Cellular iPads that really create the hassle. To be fair there is very little Apple can do about this and they make it very plain on their warranty website (check out the link above).

I have been using Apple for over 20 years now and always find that if you book an appointment in store (rather than just trying to call up) they will "normally" try and help you when they can - its one of the reasons I love them so much!!

That is true only for the European Union (or more accurately the European Economic Area) , which is considered to be a single entity for warranty purposes. The only purpose of the Region listings on the Warranty page is to make it easier for the user to locate the warranty statement for their country. It has no other purpose or meaning and most definitely does not apply to where the warranty will be honored. Again, for a WiFi+Cellular iPad or any iPhone, the warranty will be valid only the country of sale, with the aforementioned exception for the EU.

If I purchase an unlocked sim-free iphone from the apple store in the US and activate it with an EU carrier, will I get warranty in the EU country I'm using it (and had it activated) ?

NO the warranty is NOT international .You will only obtain warranty and any post warranty support if you take the iPhone back to the US and you cannot it mail it in

On a side note, can someone please confirm that there is no problem in purchasing an unlocked sim free 5s and activating it using an EU carrier ?

it will work on 3G but not on LTE outside the geography for which it was designed ie NOT EU or europe

As has been said over and over in this thread, no, there is no international warranty on the iPhone. A US-sold iPhone will be supported and serviced by Apple only in the US.

A US-sold iPhone will, if it is truly unlocked, will work with EU carriers that support the iPhone, but only on GSM, not LTE.

If you do not live in the US, I strongly recommend that you do not purchase an iPhone in the US. Buy the iPhone in the country in which you live.

"If the product is portable, meaning that it can operate independently without a power cord, you may obtain warranty service worldwide. However, service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested. If the product is not portable, warranty service may be restricted to the country where the product is purchased. Service options, parts availability and response times will vary according to country." from Apple one year warranty document. You don't need to publish this multiple times we can all see it.

That statement is a generalization from a catalog not a concrete statement of the warranty. If you have a WiFi ONLY iPad you can get international service. If you have an iPad WiFi + cellular you cannot due to approval limitations by authorities. Same is true for all iPhones. If you book an appointment with a US purchased iPhone in the EU and it just needs to be restored they can help you. If it just needs a screen replaced they may be able to help you. If the phone needs to be replaced they won't be able to help you.

Thanks for your answer and contribution to this conversation. Do you have the link of the official Apple's document where it is explained more in details? I found only general information such as:

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

PS: Sorry for the double posting, I'm just getting used to this forum.
