Persistent Subtitles

I have an Apple TV one. When I watch movies the subtitles stay on screen until they are either replaced by new subtitles or I stop playing the movie and restart it. This has only occurred with recent movies such as The Avengers and Madagascar 3. I understand there was a doubling issue with the Avengers, but I haven't seen any subtitle issues mentioned for other movies. Is anyone else having the same problem?

I have also had subtitle problems on For Your Eyes Only and Casino Royale. The problem was the same as Madagascar 3, Spanish subtitles appearing to translate English Text on the screen. Since the subtitles are not for dialog they are not constant, but they are very annoying when they do pop up.

I have notified Apple each time. They politely apologize and refund my money but the reply is a generic response. As of yet I have been unable to communicate directly with a Supervisor.

If this is true (that newer movies are incompatible with 1st gen. units), Apple needs to either clearly annotate incompatible titles in the itunes store or make them unavailable to 1st gen users rather than knowingly collecting money for a product they know won't work. Obsolecence is disappointing but understandable ... a refusal to honestly and straightforwardly deal with the issue is something else entirely.

as it seems there is no solution in the future from Apple, i am moving on...and i am NOT interested in buying one of their new Apple TVS...so if anyone is interested in starting a conversation on what is the best alternative device, I would love to hear suggestions.

it's really too bad Apple has changed so much in the last year...i guess you cant stay on top forever...

I couldn't agree with you more. It seems as if the apple of old is becoming the windows of today. I wonder if Steve was still alive if that would be the case? What is perhaps the most frustrating about all this is the total lack of responce from Apple as to the problem and communication via this discussion group or email as to where they are headed. So now one must assume that #1) they do not read these discussions, or #2) they do and don't care. That's what I think all these long time faithfull posting Apple customers are having a hard time getting their head around. So they leave us this place to post our grievances to placate our anger.

Another to the list. Taken2 and life of pi are effected. I will try the 'set to english' setting that works in some instances, but I do not want to retire my much loved atv1 for the the later streaming only device. If Apple cant sort this, then I also will be moving on. I would also like to what the best appletv1 replacement would be.

Very annoying to experience this while renting Argo on my first generation Apple TV. Those persistent subtitles are not the end of the world but they certainly don't help me enjoy the movie. Disappointed in Apple, guess they want us to buy the newer Apple TV but with a broken HDMI hookup on my flat screen, I'm really stuck in a tough spot. I paid good money for this original Apple TV, and since apple still allows me to utilize this product, I expect a good experience.

FYI to all--i have not heard from "Bob" at Apple since March 1--recall that he is a senior tech with Apple and was supposedly assisting us with this issue, working with Apple engineers. I hate to admit it but i broke down and bought a new AppleTV for our main viewing area and moved the old one to a study--have not used it to see if this issue persists with newer movies--i still see a lot of "Argo" discussion but having been out of internet touch for some 2 months, have not read all posts to see if the issue persists with new releases ?

i fired off another email to "Bob" and will let you know if there is any response.

I'm posting to this thread to document yet another customer having problems with persistent captions. Had to close and reopen The Hobbit at least a dozen times to clear the captions of orcs, elves, and dwarves (not a problem that is corrected by turning off English subtitles). Lack of responsiveness and poor customer support I see in this thread reminds me of why I stopped buying Compaq products 15 years ago. Apple, Please correct ASAP. Repair the trust of your customers.
