My iphone 5 goes "no service".
When my iphone 5 goes out of network, "no service" shows. But the phone doesn't search for network, even if there is, untill I tell the phone to search for network. Why?
iPhone 5, iOS 6

Here in Sweden it is a big problem that only iphone 5 has, and only with the carrier "3".
3 is the name of a carrier here in Sweden.
All the iphone 5 with the carrier 3 has this problem. I have called apple and the carrier. No solution jet.
I have an original unlocked Iphone 5 with OS 6.0.1.
I have restarted, resetted, reupdated "re" everithing... even used the phone 24 hours completely clean in factory settings.
To make sure it wasn´t the phone that had a problem, I tryed with 2 other simcards from other carrier and they worked perfect. The service is coming back with them. Only with all the simcards from three "3" carrier, the network never comes back.
I tryed to put the "3" simcards on the iphone 4s with OS 6.0.1 and they worked fine, the network was coming back.
It seams to be a problem with the combination of the "3" simcard and the "3"network and iphone 5.
I have been thinkin, what is different with "3" from other carriers???
The difference is that 3 doesn have any gsm, edge, 2g antennas. They only use 3g, umts antennas.
All other carriers uses the gsm 2g edge antennas where 3g umts lte is not available.
This could be the problem.
I am afraid that Iphone 5 searches for edge gsm 2g antennas when the 3g disappears and gets stuck there even when the 3g network comes back.
Could it be that in the software it was forgotten to search for 3g again when the 3g network comes back?
I mean the the software tells the iphone 5 to search for edge on and on, but never tells it to search for 3g again?
I wish an apple technician could read this.
Apple is definitely aware of the problem.
They told me a workaround is to switch of mobile data. I think they are right, it now reconnects correctly. Only that without mobile data I could equally get an old Nokia!
It is a problem with Telenor in sweden as well.
I experience this problem, when ever connection is lost due to weak or absent signal. When moving into town again it does not connect.
Should be easy for Apple to fix with software update.
Apple just told me I'm the only one who ever reported this problem. Make sure to call them!!!
I had my iPhone replaced by Apple last Saturday in an Apple Store exchange. Things were going well until and I thought the problem had gone away until this Wednesday when I got the dreaded 'No Service' message again, requiring me to toggle Airplane mode on then off, which restored the connection.
The support rep in the Apple Store told me that I was the only person she had encountered complaining about this issue, and I said that there were lots of posts online on the discussion forums of people experiencing this problem. She dismissed this by pointing out that they have sold 40 million of these iPhone 5 and it would be surprising if there weren't a few issues with some of them, which I suppose is true, but there was no attempt to engage with the fact that this may be a bigger problem.
I am sure all the 40 million iphone 5 has this problem if they come in certain network circumstances, lets hope Apple take this serious and that it is possible to solve with a software update. Other wise this will be a bigger "scandal" than the antennagate from iphone 4.
I have the same problem. i live in sweden and i do not have "3" as carrier, i have "tele2", and as someone else said, i have "re"everytninged on my Iphone 5 and the problem still persists. Please Apple get the next update as soon as possible!
I've had enough. Spoke to a senior apple adviser who said he was unaware of the problem but is going to refer it to engineering and should get a response on Monday.
Irrespective of this I've been thinking - AFAIC my contract is with 3. Therefore it is their responsibility to sort this - ultimately I don't care who is to blame.
Therefore if there is no resolution offered on Monday I'm taking my phone and contract back to 3 and I'm going to cancel the agreement on the grounds that the equipment they supplied is unfit for purpose.
I will then decide whether to go for another iPhone on a different network, or a different phone altogether. All the apps in the world are a complete waste of time if you can't make and take calls.
I'd advise anyone following this thread to do the same - if it's the only way to get anybody to sit up and take notice then so be it.
totally AGREE....
/three-3 - Sweden
Still have this /&%ing!!! bug...... and never experienced this with 3GS.......
// iShit 5
I have recently had an upgrade from the iphone 4s to the iphone5 and am with vodafone as service provider, I have experienced the 'no service' problem since I got the phone last week, I havde a 'sure signal' booster in my house to boost the signal which worked perfectly with the 4s and gave a 3G signal all the time, however I can now only get a signal occasionally (not ther 3G signal though) and it is as if the phone is not picking up the 'sure signal' at all. Even when I am in a town with good connectivity the phone does not appear to picking up the 3G signal immediately.
I think the problem is with the iphone5 and nothing to do with the network.
I hope apple get off their backside and fix the problem with 'their wonderful new phone' that does not work as a phone!!!
Hello all. I have had this same problem. Go into a no service area e.g. building, basement, or general cellular dead spot for any period of time. mostly over 5 mins or more (I have had less), and my iphone 5 won't then reconnect to the network in a known full bars area.
I tried absolutely everything, and tested every change I made. I have.......
phoned Orange.... No success
Phoned Apple ..... No success (had an apple genius (yeah right) call me. He didn't understand the problem told me it was a battery saving feature by design. I think he made that up on the spot to passify me. Presumed I was an idiot. I am not and I believe I have tested this issue perhaps more than any other on this forum.
Reset network settings, reset and erased all settings, reinstalled ios6.0.1 from iTunes, reinstalled from iCloud backup from a 3GS, restored from iTunes and let it sync, reinstalled iTunes and quickly disconnected before a sync. Redownloaded 6.0.1 and installed again.
Got new carrier settings from orange.
Let iTunes give me new carrier settings.
Tried switching on LTE, tried switching of LTE, tried manual cellular connection. Tried automatic cell selection. Tried switching off location services. Etc etc etc etc till I really felt all was lost.............
I can do this troubleshooting because I have access to a guaranteed black spot at work. The technical apparatus room of a television station. Believe me that room is dead. No phone ever constructed has been able to get a signal in there. It is essentially a faradays cage. so what im saying is i can replicate the problem whenever i like.
Then.........
I updated iTunes to latest version that was released just the other day and restored and erased and accepted carrier settings and to my surprise it has worked!!!!!!!
So far anyway ,,, I'm two days in but have tested the **** out of it. Mostly it reconnects back within 2 mins although I have had to wait 10 mins. bUt hey!! At least it coming back.
I will keep you all up to date!!! Thanks to all other people in this forum. I have followed this thread thoroughly.
So in summary. Get the latest version of iTunes that was realeased 4 days ago. And connect and yes erase and restore following every instruction like the idiots apple want us to be.
I have been an apple user since before the Internet existed. . Only recently have I had personal experience of the inevitable decline.
Add me to this.
3 - UK same problem.
Exact same problem on three in UK, iOS 6.0.1 did not fix the problem. Almost at point of demanding refund / exchange but then heard that new iOS 6.1 beta had significant updates to phone firmware. Been using over a week now and all good so far!
Plenty more discussion here:

Have been having the same issues with my iphone 5, now seems to be resolved by the following.........
settings>cellular>disable LTE
LTE is the 4G network which i'm not subscribed to.
Hope this helps someone
This does NOT resovle the problem.
