Q: iPhone 5 camera won't focus

Hey everyone,

I'm having some issues with my phone. I've had to reset my phone completely twice already for bugs and a new one has risen.

My camera officially isn't focusing. I can hold something inches from the lens and it won't focus, but everything in the background is crystal clear.

I'll tap the screen to focus, and over and over, it won't. About every 20 tries, it will for a moment, then go back to blurry. Also, the camera is having the same issue in my apps.

I'm also having a issue with when I open certain things, the screen will become glitchy and pixelated in spots.

Does it sound like my phone is a dud, or is all of this common.

Any tips to help me fix my current issues?

I'm new to the iPhone and this has been a frustrating and bummer experience so far

The phone can't focus on items closer than about 4"-5". But anything further than that should be able to focus for sure in well lit rooms, outside, etc. Do a full restore, if that doesn't fix it make an apt. with apple store and show them, phone is a dud.

Who says the phone cant' focus closer than 4 to 5 inches.  BS.  My iphone 4 did this flawlessly, it could even take closeups of finger prints and they would be crystal clear.  My iPhone 5 did too when I first got it, after updating my os, it no longer will do that.  the front camera will, the back camera will not.

Actually it's about 2-2.5". Any claim of working closer than that is BS.

    Hi friend,

Touch the screen with two fingers (taking a distance between them) and swipe them to make the two fingers be close. It opens the bar to slide to zoom in/out.

    Hope it helps

Kaka, it does not focus period.  It is supposed to auto focus, and did when I got the phone.  Now it does not auto or manual focus.

Apple wants me to give them my phone "plus" 800 dollars to cover the cost of a "loaner" phone, while they look at the issue.  What a crock!

I will tell you how i fixed the problem ( total accident but it worked ) i droped my phone , camera lost focus for distance... objects up close were still clear and in focus..

2 days later i droped my phone the exact same way by accident... it landed flat on the back.. and magicaly the camera was fine again..

Im guessing the problem is in a lens geting stuck or something .. and to fix it you have to shake it back into position..  So although i DO NOT suggest droping your phone or trying to fix it yourself.. it did solve my problem..

Some people report that taping on the camera lense/slapping your phone against your palm fixes the problem although it did not do the job for me.

So yeah , the issue seems to be with a lens being stuck or something..

Hope this helps , if all else fails and you still have your warranty go to an Apple Store, you should get it devise replaces on the spot with a refurbished one.
