iTunes TV show Season Pass is NOT downloading newly available episodes

Problem: iTunes TV show Season Pass is NOT downloading newly available episodes even though new content is fully available on iTunes Store for purchase as single episodes

I purchased Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday 10/11. The 1st episode, called "Growing Pains," aired on the evening of Thursday 10/11 and has been available since approx. 2 am EST Friday 10/12 for purchase/download on the iTunes Store, but it is NOT automatically downloading to my iTunes account even though I repeatedly click "Check for Available Downloads." The button to purchase the single episode in the iTunes Store is activated, meaning anyone can purchase that individual episode for $2.99, but I paid for the whole Season Pass and I can't retrieve this single episode.

My iTunes is NOT recognizing that there is an Episode 1 available for download. I rebooted my Mac, restarted iTunes, logged into the iTunes store to click on "Purchased" content and try to force a download, all to no avail -- the screen listing the episodes available for download under my Purchased account fails to list Episode 1 of this TV show. It as though this Episode is invisible to my iTunes account/download queue. Yet, Episode 1 is sitting on the iTunes Store server and has been there for the past day.

I have clearly identified this problem to Apple Customer Service and they did not seem to intially understand my problem. They told me that it takes a few days for TV networks to make an episode available to the iTunes store, and therefore I should wait for a few days -- this totally misses the issue! The premiere episode has already been provided by the TV network to iTunes, and is available now on the iTunes Store. The problem is a technological server-side one, where for some reason my iTunes download queue is not picking up on the fact that there is new, pre-paid content available for download.

Please help if you experienced similar issues with your Season Pass. I bought a Season Pass for last year and it worked without any problems -- all episodes aired on Thursday nights and were downloaded by 2 or 3 am Friday morning. I am thinking of cancelling/refunding the Season Pass, and just paying for Hulu+ instead of waiting around hoping for Customer Service to finally read my email and DO something instead of telling me to "wait a few days."

Below is my email thread with Customer Service. I can't believe there is no longer phone support to talk to a live person, who should be able to reset my download queue -- or do something on the server-side -- easily.

*Just a girl, in front of the TV after she cut off cable, waiting for her favorite show that she paid for to download.

Hello [ ],

I apologized for any inconvenience this issue has caused. I reviewed your account and it appears that episode is not yet posted on your account. This is the reason why it has not automatically downloaded on your account. With that being said, please try to wait for a few days or try to download the episode using iTunes in the Cloud feature. Your patience in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,

Thanks. The problem is, this Episode "Growing Pains" IS already available
on iTunes for individual purchase for $2.99, and has been available since 2
am EST last night. The issue isn't its availability from the TV network --
it's the Season Pass queue for downloads not recognizing that this episode
should be downloaded.

Yep. I see the same thing as jregner. I swear, though, that last week, Breaking Bad episode Rabid Dog WAS available for download from within my iTunes when I went to look for it. Now this week, I had to go back to the store to get the latest episode.

The work around is working but it makes Apple look like numbskulls.

I have a similar issue to that reported in this thread by various users.

My situation:

- I use iTunes for Mac latest version

- I have several season passes

- I receive the emails informing me of the new episodes

- I can manually download these via my library or via the store

- I have Download Pre-Orders when available ticked in iTunes preferences

- It never downloads season pass episodes as they become available, I always have to do it manually

- No other computers are signed into this account with iTunes, ie it's not simply being downloaded elsewhere

- The Mac I run iTunes on is a headless server, and has four Apple TVs, and several iOS devices connected to it at any one time

- The season passes were purchases on the Mac, not any of the above devices

- iTunes is permanently running on the Mac, but restarting iTunes doesn't trigger any kind of download of newly released season pass episodes. I always have to do this manually. It never ever works automatically.

So why doesn't it work? In fact, I don't think I can ever recall this having worked properly and I've had this or a similar setup for years, with various versions of OS X and iTunes, generally I upgrade to the latest rightaway.

So are Apple ever going to fix this, or am I misunderstanding what is supposed to happen? It's not an unrealistic expectation surely - I make a season pass purchase, and the episodes download when they are released?!

For me this would greatly enhance things because I have a meagre 5mbps connection so having things download overnight when they are typically made available frees up this bandwidth during the day when I need to do other things, like work!

Thank you so much so Sue me. I had a problem where one episode mid-season with a season pass itunes showed an episode that had the purchase button instead of the usual download button. So I came across your solution and suddenly it fixed it and started downloading the episode automatically and the purchase button changed to a download button. Thank you so much for saving me the stress of getting on the phone with tech support!

I have this problem where latest videos will not show up in my Unwatched portion of the TV Shows.

I don't have iTunes set to automatically download, but I just look for new episodes that come out.

At times they do not appear, but also experience the problem of it not finding any new episodes to download.

When I plugin my iPhone or iPad, a setting will occasionally get reset in the preferences section.

So click Edit then Preferences, then look at the Store tab. Often the check box next to the 'Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases' has been un-ticked.

I click it then itunes starts flashing 'busy cloud' indicator as it tries to find any unwatched content.

Often a bunch of already watched videos will now show up in my UnWatched section. I highlight them and mark them as watched. (They will always keep coming back so anyone who knows how to permanently mark these as Watched it would help a lot!)

Once you have cleared the videos/tv shows that are already watched/half-watched that you don't want, you will be left with actual new episodes to download. I manually download them by clicking the cloud option. Not sure if clicking Download Purchases will work. Will have to try that. Though I would make sure to clear any half-watched episodes that are appearing in your Unwatched section first. It may re-download them.

This check box for 'Show iTunes in the Cloud purcheses' will stay clicked even if I close the program and re-open. It seems to always reset the tick whenever I I sync to an iPad.

It's a pain, but you can get iTunes to recognize all the files that need to be downloaded and watched.

The links in the emails do not work for me because Safari is not my default web browser. I think making it your default, or using Safari to read the email will help with the link not working while clicking the current episode. I know when I send/receive gift cards, the link to redeem it will only work if I use Safari to view the mail message.

Hope some of these tips help!

I am having the same problem right now. I bought the season pass for the Bachelorette season 11 and it isn't recognizing the last two episodes available. I was just wondering if maybe The Finale episode and the After the Final Rose episode are not included in the season pass, which doesn't really make since to me, but maybe a possibility. Can anyone help me with this?

I've just ran into the season pass problem which seems to be several years old now looking at the others posts here. I have 2 purchased passes neither of which were available for me to download on the pass but were available for sale in the store. What finally ended up working for me was to quit all running applications, open iCloud in System Preferences, log out of iCloud, then log back into iCloud. Once this was done I reopened iTunes and was able to get the episodes from their respective links in the store. The download available purchases menu selection still did nothing but at least I could now get my content.

Hope this helps someone!

I don't know what your end target was here. I was having the same trouble, episodes wouldn't download on my computer. But i decided to just try it on my iPad, which was where i was going to put the episodes anyway. And sure enough it worked. Sorry if this is not useful information. It should just work on the computer like it is supposed to. And apple should really try to respond when people have issues with their products or services.
