Why can't I use my iCloud email address as my Apple ID

When I want to enter my iCloud email address (like foo@icloud.com) as my Apple ID, the system at appleid.apple.com tells me that I can't use an email address with a domain owned by Apple as my Apple ID which I find odd enough. I tried to create a new Apple ID through appleid.apple.com just to see what happens and even then it says that you cannot use an email address with an Apple domain.

It becomes even more odd when you consider that, if I'm not wrong, you can very well create a new Apple ID and use a new @icloud.com email address if you do it with an iPhone.

I can use my iCloud address as the primary email address of my Apple ID account so it's not a huge problem, but it still annoys me a little bit that the name of my Apple ID has to continue being my obsolete Gmail address.

Does anyone have more information on this?

If you had an existing (non-apple) apple id before icloud, apple gave people the ability to have an icloud (email) account attached to it. By signing into an icloud enabled device, and checking off mail, you are given the option to create an @icloud address (formerly an @me.com one), that is associated with that apple id. This allowed people to continue to use the apple id that had all their purchases, and have an @icloud address. You can sign into any apple services using this address and pretty much ignore the originating non-apple address if you want. If that originating address is no longer valid... well, that's not really apples fault. You can maintain it, or create a new non-apple address to change it to (only reason you'd really need to do this is for the sake of rescue emails).

If you don't have an apple id, and wanted to use icloud, you can create an icloud apple id by signing into an icloud enabled device. This is an apple id in its own right, and therefore cannot be used to change the address of an existing non-apple id.

This is essentially how it works, and is pretty easy to understand.

Now, what you guys are wanting is a new feature, which DOES make sense. I'm with you guys on this. You want to be able to remove the non-apple address from your accounts, and just use the @icloud address permanently, without a non-apple address. After all, new icloud signups can do this...

Anyone wanting this new feature should request it at apple.com/feedback.

Yeah - I didn't know if getting Apple-specific correspondence worked differently if your Apple/Primary email address is a Gmail. Mine is an @me.com, and I get all of my mail to my mailbox. But the OP indicated that they do not get the Apple correspondence to their iCloud address, so wasn't sure if that would be something that could be remedied by having a way to (on Manage your Apple ID) indicate that you wanted all Apple correspondence sent to your Alternate address rather than your primary one....

As I said, I don't have this issue. I see everything on my Mail whether I'm looking at it from an iOS device, my Mac, or via iCloud.com. But didn't know if that was because it was an Apple email address or not....

Cheers,

GB

P.S. - Your Mona Lisa with iPhone is showing up now for me! Much better than the head silhouette! 🙂

Unfortunately there is not an option on https://appleid.apple.com/ to manage and indicate the email address for Apple specific correspondence. It is set to the email address used for your Apple ID. And as discussed, the Apple ID cannot be set to an icloud address (even the one that is set for your account).

Interesting. I did not realize that you cannot set your primary email address to an @icloud.com domain.

Have you tried making your primary email youremailname@me.com and seeing if that sends emails to your @icloud email account? It might. If not, and you use the Mail app on iPhone, iPad, and iMac, you can easily set it up to receive @icloud emails.

It will not let you set up a '@me.com' email address either. When you attempt to change the email address, it says "Apple ID must not use a domain owned by Apple". I can understand not setting up a icloud email address tied to another Apple ID, but it won't let you set up a icloud or ".me" email address tied to your own Apple ID account. Forcing you to use a 3rd party email address. It appears the only time it will let use a Apple domain as the primary email address is when you initially setup a Apple ID. But if you initially setup the Apple ID with a 3rd party email address, you cannot go back and use the icloud or .me email address associated with the account, as your primary email address for your Apple ID and Apple specific correspondence.

I know for a fact that this is simply not true. I'm not saying you are making stuff up, I'm just suggesting that perhaps you are going about it the wrong way.

The primary email address I use for my Apple ID is an @me.com email address, and this is different from my Apple ID.

My Apple ID is an old, now defunct @sbcglobal.net address, and when I switched my life over to an @me.com email, I was unable to change my Apple ID to my @me.com email (for reasons we all know and hate). However, a work-around was to simply keep my Apple ID as the @sbcglobal.net login, but change my primary email address to @me.com

That is what I did and it works fine.

Not sure what to tell you. Perhaps give Apple a call?

I don't doubt in the past Apple might have let you change the primary email address to a @me.com or @icloud.com, but Apple does not currently allow you. The only way to currently change the Apple primary email address now is to change it at https://appleid.apple.com/ . But on this site, the link to manage/change your primary email address is also directly tied to also changing your Apple ID. Apple will not let you change them separately. This might have been different in the past, but now they are tied together. And it will not currently allow you to change it to an Apple domain....such as @me.com or @icloud.com.

Strange. I just logged in to my Apple ID, and I see options to change my Apple ID and, separately, an option to change my primary email address.

One thing that might be a problem for you is if your current Apple ID is already an email that ends in an Apple-owned domain (iCloud, me, etc.). From the support FAQ it sounds like those Apple ID's might not be able to change their primary email addresses to an Apple domain.

My current Apple ID is my gmail account.

Well, there you have it. Still, very strange.

The adviser explained to me it was because in the past, when people got locked out of their account, Apple had no way to send an email to help you recover your account.

But that is just silly, because why not just force people to use an alternate 3rd party email address if you want to use your Apple address as a primary. Plus if you have your account setup for two-factor authentication, they won't send you an email anyway to recover.

Just plain stupid!!!!

Wow, that makes no sense. Frustrating, I'm sure. What did the Apple Support guy recommend you do? I don't see how someone could manage an iTunes account with those restrictions in place.

You can still manage your primary email address (which is also your Apple ID), you just can't use your own icloud.com email address. You have to use a 3rd party email address. Stupid!

The forwarding of mails from Apple is exactly the workaround I'm using. Works good but I'd prefer receiving the mails from apple concerning my apple account on my apple mail address, but thats seems to be too much to ask :/

That's my workaround too!! I have to maintain my unused gmail account, just so I can get emails from Apple concerning my apple account. Apple needs to fix this stupid issue.
