printer unable to convert postscript file

After I upgraded to Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.2 I can't print PDF files because the printer is unable to convert postscript files. I have updated the printer's driver (HP Officejet 6600) and installed the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. I don't know what else can I do. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

Hector

Looking at the specifications for this printer, there is no mention of it supporting Postscript. So it will not be the printer that needs to convert the incoming PS spool file, but the printer driver and operating system to rasterise the PDF or PS file. So when you attempt to print from Acrobat or Preview, what happens? Do you get an error or does the file print incorrectly?

For PDFs that do not print correctly, one workaround you can do with Acrobat is to open the Advanced menu from the Acrobat print dialog and select Print As Image. The quality of the printed document can differ compared to when printed normally, but at least it allows you to print a PDF that errors sometimes.

I am having a problem printing any images on an HP 2600N. I plugged in the HP after not using for a year and can not print any images with 10.8.3. From any app I get mush where the image should be.

The printers are working fine with PC based laptops (very annoying.) I remember having something like this happen five or seven years ago but cannot remember the fix. I can print to a deskjet with no issues.

I was not able to find the printer on add printer so I connected by way of IP address using HP Direct socket and the HP 2600N software connect instead of generic. When i hook up directly with a USB cable I get the same situation.

I checked with the HP web site but they now only have firmware updates because Apple supplies the scripts.

The printer prints text just dandy.

Thoughts?

Just joining in here to say I am experiencing the same problem: since installing OSX 10.9 printing PDFs in the normal fashion does not work. (The "print as image" workaround does work, but slowly.)

All software and drivers report up to date.

Non-PDF documents (Word, Apple Mail, Intuit reports and cheques) all print fine; the only problem I've noticed is with Adobe PDFs, and only since the OSX update.

For that matter, editing Adobe PDFs seems a bit unstable as well; I have pauses and even freeze-ups, erratic behaviour.

I think the problem has nothing to do with my HP 8600+ printer, but is some interaction between OSX 10.9 and Adobe Acrobat Pro Xi (v11.0.04).

I am having the same problem all of a sudden. I get "Stopped - 'Opening raster file' failed" error and refuses to print from Adobe Reader 11.0.04. Like the thread says, I am getting around it by opening my PDFs in Preview and can print fine from there, but this does seem like an Adobe problem. I am using a Brother HL-4040 and printing on a network, and on OS 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, all software up to date. Any ideas why not working? I have a guess - is it because I have Adobe Reader opening in 32-bit mode?

Same problem here. Any new suggestion? I have Mac Adobe Acrobat XI Pro installed in my mac mini with OS X 10.9.1, and I can't print some pdf files from Adobe. My printer is a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 plus. The issue is that the file sent to print remains stuck in the printer queue indefinitely, saying "Printing - Unable to convert PostScript file". I'm aware that my printer does not support PostScript, but I can print the same file with the same printer using Windows Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. I have updated everything: Adobe, OS X and the printer drivers and the problem persists. I can print the file from Mac Adobe after changing to Print as Image, but I don't need to do that in Windows Adobe for the job to be done.

i also think it is a Adobe vs Apple update issue. I finally noticed 10 unprinted items with the same postscript error message. i drop the original file on Preview and sent them to a newly create print setup: it printed.

I am presently trying to update Adobe Acrobat and the installation is crashing on downloading from adobe.com.

In my situation, i do not allow browsers to open pdf files. I have not had much luck with the plug-ins working smoothly.

Bottomline, the print does not work from Adobe Reader app.

Your work-around worked. Acrobat Reader only prints PDFs if "Print As Image" is checked.

The symptom has been observed on my two printers, Brother MFC-7360N and Brother MFC-7820N.

Printing succeeds via Preview / Illusrator CS6

Printing fails via Acrobat Reader XI / Acrobat X Pro / Safari 7.0.2

Printer status at failure: Stopped - 'Opening raster file' failed

Every related software is up-to-date:

Mac OS X (10.9.2 Marverix)

Adobe Reader XII (11.0.06)

Brother Printer Driver (CUPS 4.0.5a)

Brother Printer Firmware (F)

Thanks for sharing, Joshua.

I also tried installing Java, and this has resolved the "print from Acrobat" problem, and also the "print from InDesign" problem, both of which have been driving me crazy.

Fonts look a little bitmappy, but at least they are printing.

I guess now I wait and see what problems I may have created elsewhere by re-installing Java! 😉
