iPhone 5 calls go straight to voice mail

This happens sometime, not always.

The caller heard one rang then the call went direct to voice mail.

I was in the full bar services area and can still receive email and IM via LTE, but I did not see any missed call notification nor incoming calls.

This happenes to my AT&T iPhone 5.

The Do Not Disturb and Airplane Mode are both off

How can I fix this?

Actually, you are all wrong, even if the 'do not disturb' settings are switched off calls still go direct to answerphone after one ring. The answer is to go into the general settings and turn the screen auto lock feature to 'never'. When you want to turn your home screen off simply push the on/off button, problem solved, simples.

Not even Apples helpline could sort this, useless, why this should happen I dont know, maybe Jonny boy Ives could earn his vast salary and get it sorted.

I'm having severe issues going between towers. Even Downtown Seattle I walked out of a building and it said I had 4G. Missed calls that went straight to voicemail, then I receive the notification I have a voicemail some time later.

I called in and certain areas switch over to the Edge Network. But I did a test with 3 family iPhone 5's. Calling them from a land line, only 1 of the three rang. The rest went straight to voice mail. I continued randomly test calling and it varied. But it was obvious not all calls were making it to the phones showing 3 bars of service.

They instructed me to turn off Settings->Cellular->Enable LTE to off. Got mixed results off doing that.

I continually just reboot my phone or flip it to airplane mode, then back off to get it to jog the network. I've also reset network settings a number of times.

I never had this issue before with my 3G or 4S phones.

With so many replies, I'm not sure if I'm replicating this answer, but, for whatever:

The test for me was a call from my iPhone to the offending phone (my wife's) which resulted in standard # of rings.

A call from our office phone (among others) went directly to vm.

I went to Settings/Do No Disturb/Allow Calls From and switched from "Favorites" to "Everyone".

Prob solved!

I've since updated to a iPhone 6. Problem still an issue.

For Do Not Disturb - a schedule of 10PM - 7AM ?? Is there a bug and it will make the call drop between 7AM - 10PM? Or is this just people that turned it on and forgot?

Via AT&T support I've disabled LTE, and the above. Apparently there is some HD Voice deal that is not properly rolled out in all areas. And the phone or the service cannot properly handle things, and your calls go straight to voicemail. I've had AT&T forward unanswered calls to a skype number I have, but the delay with forwarding leaves the person calling you listening to rings that I don't hear. They typically give up, and if they are nice send me a text message.

This issue is well documented across all networks, but I'm confused as to what to do about it. Seems like the "feature" has the adverse effect of dropping 75% of my calls. This is with 2-3 bars showing of service.
