Apple TV Remote not working & synching is not what's wrong

Tried for ages to get my Apple TV Remote to work after syncing Bluetooth keyboard, but thanks to this answer works again. A Big Thank You

Had to use remote on Iphone to Unpair what ever remote was synced

1. Choose Settings > General > Remotes from the Apple TV main menu.
2. Choose Unpair Apple Remote.

I've already tried your suggestion but all I get is the screen where I need to configure the resolution. It is the screen where the Apple logo appears and I must click OK if I see it. However, since my remote still does not respond, I can not click OK. I can not go past this screen. The device is blinking constantly and it does make the normal sound you hear whenever you click. However, it does not do anything!! Heeeeelp!!

menu+back button for 6 secs fixed it for me.

Press the menu and rewind button together and hold for 6 seconds worked for me too, not sure how this got messed up in the first place but great find for a fix!

I'm hoping someone can help me. I can't use the app because it tells me to enable home sharing on the Apple TV but if I could do that it would mean my remote works which it doesn't. I've tried the unsync unplugged for a couple of minutes and changed the battery still doesn't work. Do I throw out the Apple TV & get a Chrome cast?

You will need an original ATV remote in order to setup the remote app (as you have learned). You can try a friends remote to allow you to setup the remote app, you can purchase a new remote or yes you can find a different device (they will also have a specific remote required to use the device). But just like my tv, bluray, amp etc won't work without its specific remote neither will the ATV. You could also look at the universal remotes (I use the harmony one) as you enter a code to allow IR connectivity to the ATV but they can be pricey...
