Slow Wi-Fi connection on Mac Mini - Solved!

This has worked for me. My Mac mini connects to the TV and I don't have a bluetooth keyboard connect to it, I only connect it with the trackpad. But everytime when it boots up, the bluetooth setup assistance pops up. Before this post. I normally just minimise the bluetooth assistance.

My mac mini always have internet problem.... too slow. Its only about 5 meters away from the router. All my other devices' internet speed is just fine. I've tried many other things until I read this post.

Before the fix. Watching youtube on 1080p on the mac mini is impossible. All other devices are just fine.

After the fix. I can watch youtube on 1080p just fine.

Thank you so much, I have been plagued with such a slow internet connection for months now, and would get so frustrated using my Mac mini. I went through several support people all the way up to tier 3 and ended up getting them to send me another Mac Mini after numerous failed support attempts, and I still had the same problem. I got fed up with it and just ran a long network cable from my router to my Mac Mini. This is an awesome find! It runs so much faster now while on the internet!!! Apple should put this in their support documentation.

I am having similar problems with my mac mini...

After following your thread....

1. Apple magic mouse. Connected

1. Ticked. Open bluetooth set up assistant at startup if no key board detected

2. Ticked. Open bluetooth set up assistant at startup if no mouse or trackpad board detected

3. Ticked. Allow bluetooth devices to wake up computer.

4. NOT ticked. Reject incoming audio requests

2. Apple wireless keyboard. Connected.

Same as 1. !

Any clue how to proceed to fix the wifi connectivity.

I was having the same issues with my Mac Mini (late 2012) on the 2.4GHz spectrum. I can't use 5GHz in my house because of where my wifi router is located (cannot be moved), and I need all devices on 2.4 in order to share/stream, etc. My Mac Mini picks up both spectrums so I can test on the 5GHz band, and wifi was always fine.

My issue was being caused from an external USB 3.0 HDD that I have running next to my Mac Mini:

I turned it off, and my speeds instantly were restored to normal speeds (from 2Mbps to 15Mbps)

it's interesting that you mention the external USB 3.0 hard drive being the problem. After a while my wifi issue came back. I have an external USB 3.0 HDD I use for Time Machine sitting right next to the Mac Mini, I never thought that could be the problem, but I've had it from day one since I got the mac mini. I will unhook it and try the wifi again. If that is the culprit, not sure what to do about a time machine solution.

Kryodawg - it doesn't need to be moved very far. I had my drive right next to the mini (but between it and the router), now its on a shelf less than two feet above it (I also tested one foot in front was ok too), and now my speeds are back to 25Mbps, which I am more than happy to get.

I unplugged the drive, and turned back on my wifi, I've never seen it go so fast on wifi. I went to speedtest.net and was hitting speeds on download of 20 Mbps. I will get a USB extension cable, the cable that came with the drive is pretty short, so it is like 3 to 5 inches away from the Mac mini all the time. I'm going to continue to test it, I really don't like the network cable running through my home.

It's been several days, and my wifi is working like a champ! no slow downs at all!

Glad I stumbled upon this thread. I had tried all sorts of things to fix my wifi connectivity even replacing the modem/router box. After reading this thread I unhooked my USB3.0 HD and didn't see much of an improvement. I have an Anker USB3.0 4-port hub connected to the computer too so I decided to yank that as well. Speedtest results after pulling that: Download 58.28Mbps, Upload 11.57Mbps.

BOOM!
