Slow Wi-Fi connection on Mac Mini - Solved!

Wow, just wow. Had been suffering at intermittent and low speed wifi. Unhooked hdd and now back to 30 MBs. Thanks all!

Another happy user. This bluetooth assistant thing is something I would never have figured out on my own. Thank you for a great fix.

I know I'm very late in joining this thread so appologies but I'm praying you can help as I'm about to throw the Mac mini out of the window because of awful wifi speeds. On the Bluetooth solution, I only have the trackpad and keyboard in the Bluetooth assistant...all three boxes are ticked when I open up advanced. Are you saying I should have all of these unticked?

I'm afraid this fix didn't work for me. I'm setting up a 2011 mac mini for my parents and the wifi download speed is atrocious. Only getting about 100kbps. Upload speed is 6+mbps. My 2007 macbook laptop and 2013 android phone both get download speeds of 20-40mbps in the same location, as does my parents old Windows XP desktop with wireless-G card. The Mini is pretty much unusable for internet. Even very basic web pages (such as this forum) take nearly a minute to load.

I have bluetooth turned off, and only have a USB keyboard and mouse plugged in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Worked a treat, very easy to apply with immediate improvement. What really p***es me off is that Apple did not write the code to avoid this conflict, why does it have to be down to a forum to come up with a solution. Well done!!!

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

If using Wifi/Airport...

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

Click OK.

If that doesn't work try changing channels on your Router.

Thank you so much! I suffered for over five years with horrible wireless connectivity on my Mini and tried so many things, including buying a new Wi-Fi access point, but never ever suspected Bluetooth was involved.

Unchecking the boxes that enable the bluetooth keyboard and mouse setup worked great. Back to a reasonable wifi performance. Caution-be sure you have a USB keyboard and mouse somewhere nearby in case of a disaster. I have had much difficulty with getting restarted with a nonfunctional bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

I think that someone at Apple missed a connection somewhere in Yosemite-the configuration of my mac mini has hardly changed in years, except to upgrade OS.

The bluetooth solution did nothing for me but unplugging my USB HDD worked instantly!

Just found out that if I change the 5 Ghz channel from 45 to 165 I can leave those bluetooth boxes checked and speed is consistently high avoiding the interference.

same here. who was to know. disconnected my Anker USB 3.0 hub and the wireless internet now works fine.
