IOS 6 - Listening to Videos with the screen off or in the background??

Is there any way to play a video or a music video on iphone 5 so that the audio plays in the background but you can multitask and do other things on the phone while listening? This is critical to how I use the phone. I was able to do this with IOS 5 but functionality was removed on IOS 6.

Please reply if you have found any work-arounds or know if Apple has plans to include this in the next update. It's very silly that I can't even listen to a music video or video while I'm walking about (turns off the second the screen shuts off or the phone is locked).

Thanks

iPhone 5, iOS 6

Have the video playing, lock the screen then double tap home button when the screen is locked you can then choose play while the screen is locked. 🙂

Lets use YouTube for example.

Start the video you want to listen to in Safari and start playing it. Exit safari (note the music will stop). double click the home button to multitask and swipe left to bring up the music player controls and press play

Start the video you want to listen to in Safari and start playing it. Lock the screen (note the music will stop). Double click the home button to bring up the music players controls and press play.

These features automatically play from the last audio source (e.g. Safari, Pandora, Music Player). Please note that in my example of YouTube once the video ends you will need to start it in Safari again for this feature to work.

I HAVE EXACTLY TE SAME PROBLEM. Now I've upgraded to ios6, the work around discussed before us not working (ie lock the home screen when video is playing and press play or fast forward).

I have purchased short tv programmes from iTunes and now cannot listen to them. I have to watch them at the same time. No multi tasking. Was ok until Apple split mystic and videos app from the "iPod" app. Shame.

Keen to know any work around!!

Thanks

Interestingly enough, I have the same problem here. Playing just the sound from a video with a locked screen is now IMPOSSIBLE. With iOS5, I was able to just listen to a video podcast with a locked screen especially if I'm busy with something else. With iOS6, can't do it anymore and I am not a happy customer 😠. I really don't see a reason to remove this feature. (Btw, tried all the posted workaround and none worked)

Hope there is a fix to this soon.

Thx!

It seems that videos that play in Safari seem to work in the lock screen, but not videos played from the native video player app.

I am running IOS 6.0.1 on an iPhone 4S

For example to play a youtube video with the screen off I do the following:

1. Go to m.youtube.com and start playing the video you want.

2. With the video playing double tap the home button and swipe left and hit play to restart the audio.

3. Now hit the home button (the audio will stop).

4. Double tap the home button and swipe left and hit play. The audio will start back playing and you can now do other stuff on your phone while the video sound is playing.

5. Now you can turn off the screen, double tap home, and hit play and the audio will play with the screen off.

Note: This doesn't seem to work with the video player, so it is likely the video player needs to be updated by apple somehow.

Im truely unhappy this is disabled with new IOS. I always used to stream youtube and keep the audio playing from my Lock Screen.

only way around this is to not install the youtube app, and just play youtube through the safari browser, which *****, but at least its possible.

Hope word gets to customer service at apple and they fix this on the next release. /angry

On Ios 6.1 it doesn't work but I foud a way. From the youtube app you copy the link, open the site http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ you paste the link into the space to convert, you click the convert button and after it is converted (3-4 seconds) you click download. This will open a quicktime player in safari and you can press the home button, entering other app while listening the song and that is all. Enjoy

So here is what I do.... Let me know if this works for anyone else.

1. Play video

2. Double tap home screen key

3. Slide options on the bottom of screen to the right revealing a play button flanked on both sides by buttons designed to skip forward and back 15 second buttons

4. Push the play button

5. Push the lock screen button

voila

oops this seems to only work in the podcasts app
