Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.01 for Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11

Dear Apple,

I'm still happily running Snow Leopard, which was only superceeded by Lion few days past 2 years ago.

I cannot install the latest update to Aperture 3, and now I can't install the latest RAW compatibity update for the D600 I've recently purchased.

Does this mean Apple now has a backwards (in)compatibility policy for software/hardware little more than 2 years old?

I cannot fathom why a RAW update is not compatible with all versions of Aperture 3. This is forced redundancy in my opinion. Not happy...

I understand that this is annoying for you, but it is part of the redesign of MacOS to make it more efficient and not to waste disk space on redundant installations.

The recent raw update - as I see it - is an update to Mac OS X 10.8.x, not to Aperture. Since Mac OS X Lion Apple has started to migrate the raw support directly to the OS, so they do not need to install the raw support as update to many different applications. I have not checked yet - is this update included in Lion as well? I sincerely hope so.

Send feedback to Apple that you need this upgraded raw support also available in Snow Leopard.

Not at all, quite the opposite in fact. Current software will happily open data from two years ago, which is what backwards compatibility means.

What, still no Fuji X-Pro1 raw support? I wonder what the criteria is for the Apple approved camera list.

I'm curious...who does have good, reliable RAW support for the Fuji X-Pro1??

If you buy the latest and greatest cameras, you should expect that you have to upgrade your OS and RAW processing software on occasion as well.

Maybe I'm just feeling grouchy today.

Looking around online, consensus is that the best RAW decoder for the X-Pro1 is the camera's internal JPEG conversion. There's an article here that discusses different decoding software.

And I am too; 😟 each time a new raw update is released, I am reminded of the fact, that for my favorite camera no raw support is available and probably never will be. I am waiting since 2009. Fortunately the in-camera jpeg conversion is very good. If I want to shoot raw, I have to fall back on dng-converter. So I would like to modify your User Tip:

If you buy a new camera and want to shoot raw, make sure that the camera will be supported by your favorite applications, before you buy it.

Thanks guys...exactly my point to RH Francis, fujifan on the thread When will Aperture have support for RAF files from the new Fuji XPro-1? and likely others.

People are pretty quick to get on Apple's case, but maybe, just maybe, there's a lot more to this. Like how complex Fuji has made their RAW conversion for the software developers. If the likes of Adobe, Phase One, and Apple haven't figured it out yet it kinda points to where the problem really lies.

Yes -- I recommend the link, though it is probably best to start with the first link in the linked article (here). I have subscribed to Sean Reid's site for a couple of years. He does excellent -- exemplary -- work.
