Left click not working (freezing) on rMBP

Hey guys,

I own a 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display, and since yesterday, I've been experiencing a weird issue with left clicking. Basically, what happens is that it becomes unresponsive and freezes in its last state (i.e., if I was dragging a window, or making a multiple selection, by holding the left click, the mouse will continue to hold on to the window or selection, and I will not be able to cancel it, because left clicking won't work). I can still move the cursor, right click, and use gestures on the trackpad, but left clicking won't work.

This happens on every mouse device that's connected to the machine. For example, I had a wired Logitech mouse connected via USB, a Magic Mouse connected via Bluetooth, and then the trackpad on the laptop itself. All three input devices functioned the same - no left click, and everything else works.

I was able to 'patch it up' by closing the lid and sending the computer to sleep, and then waking it up after a few seconds. The key was then responsive again. This doesn't work everytime. Problem is, the issue resurfaces after a while, mid-use. I've also had times where I woke the machine up from sleep, and it would start up with no left click, or rather immediately lock.

Has anyone experienced this?

I have been dealing with this issue since Lion and now I'm still dealing with it on Mountain Lion. Sleep/wake cycling the computer only helps sometimes, often I'm forced to turn the machine off completely by holding down the power button. The machine is so unusable when the left click is 'permanently down' that shutting down and restarting the 'correct' way isn't possible. The issue crops up randomly on wake, but the odds of it happening increase if I connect an additional display. Note that the issue also occured with my older non-retina MacBook Pro after upgrading to Lion.

Actually, since submitting the original post, I've had no recurrence of this. It's weird. I posted about a drop in graphic performance, was told to reset the SMC, I did that, and since then it had stopped occuring. Same here.

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having this problem. No apparent fix atm. :\

Actually I just fixed it.... I think. I reinstalled Mountain Lion just now. It was happening everytime I turned my Macbook on from being powered off. I have done 4 power cycles and its not happening anymore. Hopefully it stays this way.

Also my Macbook Pro is shutting down much faster since the reinstall. 🙂

Just got a macbook pro retina display 15in and realized I could not select text or move windows with the mouse. Was really frustating as I need to use the logitech mouse as i work in Parallels/Windows 7 quite a bit and need to get an answer. Not sure if this is what everyone else is running into or just those who have a Logitech mouse, but once I turned off "Secondary Click" in System Preferences>Trackpad and deselect it, my mouse was able to drag and select again.

Now the problem is trying to figure out how to make it work all the time.

I experience the left-click problem frequently. Many times I have rebooted to get past the issue but recently learned a new way to get the left click functioning again. This solution may not fix every instance of the problem but it's worth a shot.

Press the left click button while holding the Command button on the keyboard. The left-click functions resume immediately without rebooting.

I am fairly new to the Mac world but I am learning little by little.
