Left click not working (freezing) on rMBP

Hey guys,

I own a 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display, and since yesterday, I've been experiencing a weird issue with left clicking. Basically, what happens is that it becomes unresponsive and freezes in its last state (i.e., if I was dragging a window, or making a multiple selection, by holding the left click, the mouse will continue to hold on to the window or selection, and I will not be able to cancel it, because left clicking won't work). I can still move the cursor, right click, and use gestures on the trackpad, but left clicking won't work.

This happens on every mouse device that's connected to the machine. For example, I had a wired Logitech mouse connected via USB, a Magic Mouse connected via Bluetooth, and then the trackpad on the laptop itself. All three input devices functioned the same - no left click, and everything else works.

I was able to 'patch it up' by closing the lid and sending the computer to sleep, and then waking it up after a few seconds. The key was then responsive again. This doesn't work everytime. Problem is, the issue resurfaces after a while, mid-use. I've also had times where I woke the machine up from sleep, and it would start up with no left click, or rather immediately lock.

Has anyone experienced this?

ii had the same problem on my iMac. the left click did not work although the mouse moved fine. the right click worked fine. I finally found the answer online. I also own a MacBook Pro with a bluetooth mouse. It had been left on and stuck in my case. The answer is that the bluetooth mouse for the MacBook was close enough to be recognized by my iMac which also has a bluetooth mouse. Something must have pressed on the MacBook mouse and activated it. So the left click was continually activated. This actually happened to me twice. As soon as I turned off the bluetooth mouse for the MacBook, everything worked as it should.

Hope this helps

Mary - It's good that this solved your problem, but this happens with both the trackpad and bluetooth mouse. I'm working at my desk on a macbook pro and bluetooth mouse, and it took several power cycles and open closing the lid to fix it.

One thing I've noticed is if you have an external HDMI monitor plugged in, closing the lid doesn't work as the HDMI seems to keep everything awake.

....aaargh!

I had this problem on my 2012 rMBP (OSX 10.9) for the first time today, and found this thread. Rebooting, sleeping, and command-clicking did nothing.

When I got to the posts about devices in backpacks I realized my Magic Mouse was sitting in my backpack a few feet away. Lo and behold, I had forgotten to turn it off. I did so, and immediately left-clicking worked again. 🙂

Thanks, all.

I'm still experiencing this issue--left click on a magic mouse. Running a MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 | 8GB RAM | Mavericks, OS 10.9.2 and have noticed the issue getting worse in the past few days. I've tried everything in this thread, both technical and simplified (quirky) fixes, i.e. shutting the laptop case and waiting a few seconds, or cmd left-clicking. I only have 1 BT mouse connected, and not others in a laptop case or elsewhere. It is getting to the point where I can't effectively work in Photoshop, b/c clicking, dragging elements and moving layers hangs up to the point where I'm making mistakes. Moving files in the OS has the same errors. A coworker has seen the same issue lately with his MBA, also running 10.9.2.

Any new suggestions would be appreciated until Apple udates again.

I am experiencing the same problem on a MBP 15" late 2013. After opening the lid, single click functions stops working, right mouse click (two fingers) does work. After waiting a while, it comes back again. I've contacted Apple Support and have done the usual rebooting/repairing stuff, but to no avail. No "mouse in the bag" causing this either. I'll post any real solution I can find.

I found out that turning off the bluetooth connection restores the trackpad functionality. Apparently my MBP thinks there is still a (Magic) mouse connected after I close and re-open the lid. This also occurs if there is no mouse nearby at all. My best guess is a problem with the bluetooth stack that is mistaking other bluetooth devices in the area for a mouse connection. I will test it with several scenarios and report back.

I've been trying to figure out the same problem----why my left click randomly stops working on my MacBookPro. Been over this with APpleCare, the Apple store and my university ITS folks. Apple Store even replaced the track pad, still nothing helped.Similar symptoms, seemsrelated to the external monitor. But the problem only happens at work, never at home...Just now read these suggestions about the bluetooth connection and remembered I have a Magic Trackpad in my desk drawer at work that automaticlly connects via bluetooth to my laptop. So just now I've gone to Bluetooth Preferences and removed that device. So far, so good my left click is working but time will tell!
