Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

I just got my 2012 Mac Mini yesterday (mid range model) and have already noticed three instances where the video would blink out for about a half second, and then come right back. This happend twice already when I'm connected to a Apple 23 inch LCD monitor via the included HDMI-DVI adapter and once when I'm connected via HDMI to my Samsung LCD TV. Anyone else noticing this happening on their Mac Minis? Thanks.

Thanks Philip! Sounds promising.

Has anyone at Apple asked you for a status update, or have you sent them any info/detail on it's behavior since the replacement?

If Apple haven't asked for any update info from you, then the logical inference would be that they were confident with the fix, whereas if Apple asked for an update from you then they were not confident and that they were experimenting with a fix.

I will wait a week to ask you for a similar status update if I may impose.

I'm really interested in buying the Mini - its price point and hardware package suits me ideally but this video issue is worrisome. I'm new to Macs (always a Windiws user) but this issue gave me pause. So I haven't bought it yet.

Thanks again!!

After returning my 2012 mac mini a couple weeks ago for the blink/snow issues, i ordered another custom build i7 2012 mac mini connected via HDMI to Sceptre TV. I plugged my shiny new mini in and waited for it to boot up, made it to the welcome screen and blinky blink snow.... back in the box, off to the apple store for a refund.

Will order another one in a week or two unless I get fed up enough to buy a PC instead... or maybe a build a hackintosh. I really just want a working mac mini though... I know that's probably asking to much... it'd be really great if apple would decide to let us know what's going on and that hopefully it'll be corractable via software so we could stop guessing.😕

Hopefully some company will release a thunderbolt video card for the mac (at a reasonable price)... then I can have my mini & dedicated gpu. Apparently some have already have this up & running in windows/thunderbolt so there's hope (at least via boot camp if not MacOS).

It's highly doubtful that anything different will happen for the next 30-60 days. It will take that long for the developers to test the newly seeded 10.8.3.

That would indeed be great, or maybe Apple could release a Mac mini Pro with dedicated GPU and some other goodies.

Yes, 10.8.3 will probably takes some time however a separate firmware update could be provided prior to that. There's also the possibility that something could change hardware wise as some have reported no issues when they replaced their mini. Either way, Apple offers free shipping and a 14 day no hasstle return policy (at least in the states) so I have little to loose and everything to gain.

Interesting little article on refresh rates:

For me, I'm not taking a step backwards to MAKE IT WORK. I'm not going back to a 50hz refresh rate. And I'm not taking one stick of RAM out. Let Apple/Intel fix this product properly.

If I do anything to circumvent the HDMI, I'd go with this as a stop-gap measure:

I was running: terminal, safari, mail, itunes, steam, preview, xcode, itunes simulator, activity monitor. today for the first time my screen went black for 3 seconds and then the screen went to static and wouldn't stop. I unplugged and plugged back in the HDMI and it worked.

I've had 2 second black screen issues every once in a while. Maybe 15 times since owning it.

I am in Australia and the option on my display refresh rate within mac os gave me two options 60hz NTSC or 50 hz PAL, my display is a BENQ GW2450, maybe it depends on the type of monitor you have? I am not too savy about this. All I know is that it solved my problem, I know this is not perfect but it works and I know that Apple should make it foolproof with any type of HZ, but the mac mini embraces the world of third party monitors and periphrals so it is more difficult to pinpoint, but we all love macs because they 'just work' so I dunno exactly.

Also I made sure all my connections within my monitor and mac were all set to proper HDMI inputs, this can create snow if you do not set your monitor inputs corrrectly.

Im older and kind of mac dumb as I want to get a mac and head in that direction... Always had a pc then went and tried a smart phone... didnt like it so went to an apple smart phone and really liked it so I got an Ipad this year and really like that too... Tried windows 8 last week and hated it after 3 days of trying to like it. At 65 I do not want to go there with windows and find myself stuck so looking at Macs.... I like the idea of a mac mini and Im not a geek, Im more like an educated dummy who is simple in my ways. All the complaints about the mini are putting me back as I want a unit I can connect to my 50 inch panasonic tv like I do with my cheap hp lap/netbook dz1 and work my computer from my couch. I play some dvds and now hearing about these blackouts and video problems that I never have with my cheapie and never have with my dells either.... Im a bit put back on putting out some 1400 bucks for a 2.6 ssd mini with some ram and might find my unit will not work as I plan... Im not a power or game user... just normal work stuff, printer and microsoft office stuff but want to work it on my flat panel pano 50 inch plasma which I can do now with cheap pc laptops... What gives with the minis... Are these normal problems with all users or power users and gamers?

Like I said, Im mac dumb but do not want another pc with the new windows period. What should I get?
