Mac Mini 2012 video blinking out

Another "me too" post. I'm in Australia and got a late 2012 basic 2.3 i7. Connected via HDMI to a Samsung LCD TV. Every session is interrupted by black-snow-magenta-green. Changed the lead, used a different HDMI input to the screen and still get the fritz.

This is my first mac and it's not a good experience. I've had an old pc running linux chugging away happily for years. Tempted to give the mac the flick.

Also, it won't play sound over HDMI while the line out is plugged in. What's with that?!

Like wrote earlier, I'm getting occasional flicker with my DP-DVI adapter and I'm also seeing artifacts on black backgrounds, sort of when a GPU is overheating or going bad. I switched to the included HDMI-DVI adapter and the black background artifacts are gone with this connection, picture looks good. But of course after a while I get a blackout and then static. Powercycling the monitor brings the picture back.

This is quite disappointing.

I've got the same problem with my new 2.3Ghz i7 mac mini. Actually it's quite consistent: when I turn on the mini in the morning, I can be sure to see one single flicker within the first minutes while it's running. And then maybe one more somewhen during the day. My monitor is an HP LP2475w, connected via HDMI-to-DVI adapter that came with the mini.

Another thing I've observed is that when the screen wakes from standby mode, it comes up, just to go black for a split second again before it stays on. With my old 2010 mini, the screen came back and stayed.

Yet another maybe graphics-related issue: when I use screen sharing to access the new mini, it can happen that I only get a dark gray screen on the first attempt. On the second attempt, I see the remote desktop.

Annoying, yes. I've pretty much decided to keep my mini nevertheless though, because I don't expect that I get one that works better if I go for a replacement now, and I don't want to go for an iMac or even a PC. And I am confident that the issue will get fixed eventually, either through a software update or an exchange.

Hello to all just like most of you i have the same Late 2012 i7 Quad Core Mac Mini and have the same problems HDMI to HDMI to a Samsung S27950D screen color all washed out and blinks from time to time black or color snow and the only fix so far for the last one is turnning the screen off then on again as for the washed out color i decided to try using the adoptor that come with the mini HDMI to DVI and connect it to my screen with the DVI cable that fix the washed out color but the rest is still present black out and show and most of the time it happens with in the first 10-15 minutes of turnning the mini on.

Never had this kind of problem with my 2011 i5 2.5Ghz AMD 6630 pluged in with the same HDMI cable come on Apple post a fix if is software get to it if not we are to ask for our money back and not happy at all, if only i still had my 2011 Mac Mini with the AMD graphics rocks not this what looks like a problematic Intel HD 4000.

Also now in the display settings the Display Profile is the S27950D just like it was on my old 2011 Mini with the HDMI cable that i don't get on this new 2012 Mini only with HDMI to DVI it wasn't present to select with HDMI to HDMI only HD 709-A Profile was sort of best but still had to Calibrate that one and in the end was light years behind the normal S27950A profile that i get with HDMI to DVI

I called last night and registered my Mini as having the proble. They pretty quickly confirmed that the problem is widely reported.

I really hope they can fix this with a patch or firmware change. swapping out a new machine will be a pain in the @ss after I'ved added RAM and swapped the HD.

I just have the memory upgrade done but even with the stock memory was doing the same thing but yes I get your operation is way bigger to change back if you to return the item.

I broke down and bought a Mini Display Port to DVI adapter today. 24" Samsung display on MDP->DVI and 19" BENQ display on the HDMI->DVI.

The above shows that at least in my case, the problem is not specific to my monitor since the flickers also occurred on my Samsung monitor, but seems to follow the HDMI connector (and perhaps the provided HDMI->DVI adapter).

The other thing I noticed was that the BENQ was much better at showing the lighter colours than the Samsung, even on the HDMI->DVI connector. The problem in this case followed what monitor was connected.

I called support who had me download a version of of OSX called 10.8.2 Combo. They said it may fix the problem. It won't install. That's 650MB I won't be getting back. Not happy. Not happy at all.

No that will not work as the new Mac Mini 6.1 and 6.2 have a special version of ML I try to do all all new fresh install from my 10.8.2 USB and same results no go then I try "command + r" restore from the Apple servers took hours over the Optus cable but in the end that didn't help too. Looks like we all are in the same bag and will have to wait till they release a fix firmware or just a software update hope soon

But just about to try a Display Port to HDMI if I can find my adopter found the DP to VGA but not on my 27" 3D LED S27950D

ME TOO!! I bought the newest of the very basic Mac Mini model here in the Chicagoland area and mine is having the same exact issue as all of you. I called the Apple support line and he had me do a couple of resets (taking the power cable out from the back for 10 seconds and also starting the Mac with the Option + Command + P + R keys held down). That did not help. So I went to the store and got a replacement, and the replacement also has the same problem! The colours on mine are fine, but there is still the flickering problem. I tried different decent monitors and HDMI cables, but they all had the same issue.

This is my first Mac ever and am supremely disappointed. And the fact that Apple support on the phone and also the Store employees are not even aware of this issue is a little troubling. Not at all what I expected from Apple after having such an amazing experience with the iPod/Phone/Pad.

I'm sure they will sort it out.. I just hope they do it soon. For now, though, I am considering returning the Mac. Maybe get one again after they solve this issue.

Well the problem hasnt returned(day 2) since doing the SMC Reset. So hopefully it still doesnt. When I called apple support to just open up a case(USA), they had me go through the same stuff. Even the "supervisor" had no idea.

People that have returned it are experiencing the same problems with the new one they recieved. So I dont think that will help. Hopefully it is sorted with a patch/update. Also, I hope(reading it here) that infact they would alert people who have registered their product, that a exchange is taking place. I just keep checking back here because NO INFORMATION seems to be anywhere. Apple in my experience has excellent service, but with this I am cutting them some slack 🙂 I think they are trying to figure out what the heck is going on, just like the users are.....Patience......

I agree, give them some time to get to the bottom of it and solve it. When I called last night they didn't give me any BS at all, conceded right up front that a lot of people were reporting it. They are calling me back tonight to see if it still happens after the SMC reset. it does.

Wish I had the same experience calling Apple. I've been having the same issues. Screen flickers Black or display becomes snowy. Only way to get the video back to normal is to power cycle my receiver. The rep I talked to didn't even know that the new Mac Mini had HDMI. He said the only way I could be using HDMI is with the DP to HDMI adapter, UGGHHHH...... Told him I'm using HDMI to HDMI. "Oh ya, I see that now". Frustrating.

Yeah, I did a boot in safe mode- Restarted. Came back once(flicker black to on 1sec).

Then I tried the SMC reset 2 days ago. Havent seen anything since(fingers Xed). Yesterday I was on it for a good 1-2 hours with no flicker. Other than that issue here everyone is having, I love it! Nice adjustment from just macbooks. Hopefully Apple gets to the bottom of it and lets everyone know what to do.
