Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) doesn't see HP1200 Printer over network

Hopefully somebody can shed some light here -- I have an HP LaserJet 1200 on my ethernet LAN. Have never had any problems setting it up to print using earlier versions of Mac OS or ever Windows ⚠ -- however as fas as Mountain Lion is concerned the printer doesn't exist. I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers from HP, restarted machine, etc to no avail. Can anybody tell me what I need to do to make 10.8 see the printer across the room?

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

For the Mac to see the printer on the network, it would have to support an advertising protocol like Bonjour. From some of the information I could find on this model, it appears to be an old printer and may not support Bonjour, but may have supported AppleTalk, another advertising protocol that was last supported on Leopard (10.5). So instead of trying to find it on the network, if you know the printers IP address, you can add it to the Mac by selecting IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol.

I can sympathize with your problems. I spent 2 days trying to make my LJ 2100 TN work with OS 10.8.2. The kicker was that when I tried to add the printer to my existing [ethernet] network with my new iMac on Wi-Fi it killed the existing network. No computer could now print! I could still get on-line though.

I did a lot of research on the net; I called my ISP and did learn how to get the IP numbers on each device; I called Mac Tec, they passed the buck, saying because I wasn't using a Mac router they couldn't help.

I solved the problem today; I hope this helps...

When I tried to add the printer to 'Print & Scan' the 'Add' window comes up; and even though I made the 2.12 download, there were no print drivers to be seen. Apple in it's infinite wisdom left out the 'Advanced' icon in the 'Add' window. Right click the header and add it. Now there is a function to actually search for the print drivers.

You will have to choose 'Type'. I tried a few but 'Jetdirect' worked best for me. NOTE: your printer should be on before you make your choices in the 'Add' window.

Add your printer's IP number in the 'URL' field.

In the 'Use' field, select your proper print driver.

If you did it all correctly, the 'Add' button will light up and hopefully add a new printer to the 'Print & Scan' window.

Good luck. [I also had the delete and replace the printer on my other 2 computers in the network to make them able to print again.]

Unfortunately this hasn't worked the oracle for me. As I write my system is still trying to 'set up' the device. I have tried giving it an IP address using my Win XP box that sits on my desk for testing... currently the MacPro and the WinXP CAN print over IP using a shared connection over the Mac G5 tower, but this is long-winded and tedious (and the Mac G5 has to be 'awake').

I've gone to HPs site to have a moan -- when I fill out the form (was this page useful?) saying that it wasn't and hit submit it tells me it 'can't find the page'. I tried their 'support wizard', jumping through all sorts of strangely-shaped hoops, till I came to the part where it asked for the printer serial number (which I was actually able to find) -- then it told me the serial number wasn't 'valid'. As it's the number on the printer and also the only number I have, I was unable to continue. Guess HP are more interested in selling printers and don't actually give a sh*t about customer support.

In fact this is all very reminiscent of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation (if you don't know what this is look up your 'guide' -- ie 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy') and the way I feel about it at the moment, a certain printer is about to receive a 'Short, Sharp Shock' as I send it through a certain window...

In short, it's very close to receiving a 'programming it will never forget'...

Does anybody know of a configuration utility that might help (probably third-party)?

Same problem here with the same printer (HP LJ2100TN). I have a G4 running 10.3.9, no problems printing via appletalk but when I try to add this %&$"#$%& printer to my macmini running 10.8.2.... NADA!!! I was able to make the mini connect to the printer and vice-versa. Using NETWORK UTILITY, I was able to send PINGS to the printer's IP, so I guess it's alive, but when I tried to print, again.. NADA!!

--- xxx.xxx.x.xx ping statistics ---

10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0.0% packet loss

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.608/0.658/0.745/0.056 ms

I think I will also use the window and solve the problem : ((

Same problem with a HP 8150 series and my Mac OS 10.8.2 Mountain Lion. After trying everything I realized that my problem was that the old IP of the printer had changed so the comunication between both devices was not working (obviously neither with my old Mac) . It was only one number difference. I don't know why it changed.

I printed the HP specifications and use the new printer IP number in the "Print and Scan" IP option and voila!.

I hope it can help someone!

I tried this, and just about everything else. Didn't work (even though it could be seen on the network). What finally did was giving up, pluggin in the printer via USB, and suddenly I got asked if I wanted to do a software update for the printer. Did it, and fixed. So despite claims about the drivers being in 10.8, they ain't there unless it sees your printer.
