Be a whacker!

Hi to anyone who dropped their iPad and is a disbeliever! Listen to the good advice here on this forum!

I dropped mine yesterday morning (onto carpet, from a night table), and the screen was blue/black and sometimes it flashed.

I tried all the restore and recovery options, and I knew from iTunes when I connected it with my PC that it was still working ok internally, but the darn screen wasn't working at all.

Anyway, after 2 calls to apple, 3 calls to local repair people, i knew i would have to fork out at least $250 for the new model as it didn't look promising. I was so frustrated, so, i did what was recommended on this site and i REALLY whacked it.(I had gently hit the back yesterday when i first read it, but didn't feel comfortable so I stopped). This time I had nothing to lose, so after 3 minutes of some very hard hits to the back, the screen popped up, I restored it from my iCloud, and all is good again.

Thank you lucky Whacker guy!!!

Sorry folks, bad news.

The whacking method didn't work for long. the next day my screen was black/blue, but nothing worked. So i'm likely out the $250 +tax to get it replaced/fixed. It's 5 weeks past the warranty and they won't consider it (note - their warranty is 365 days exactly so if you bought an apple product on Dec. 22, the warranty expires at midnight on the 21st and they won't accept it on the 22nd (I asked).

Good luck. So frustrated!

OMG!!! Ive been without my Ipad for 3 months plus, I dropped it and the screen went black! I found this post, dont know how I missed it, I literaly gave up hope, thinking I'd never use it again. low and behold I turned it upside down laid it on my knee and gave it a few smacks, nothing! then I almost gave up again... tried once more giving it a good SMACK, (nothing to lose) and pressed and held the power & home buttons viola!!!!! Thanks a trillion times over

Alanfromnewtownards, you are a fricking genius.

I dropped my iPad down carpeted stairs last night. Wide black and grey vertical bars across the screen. I searched this morning and found your thread. I whacked it probably 20 times, never really hard, becasue I didn't want to break it. LOL! The wide bars turned into fine line barcodes and picked up more color with every whack. I then tried the other suggestion and held down the screen button and the power button for 20 or so seconds. My screen went through 3 different color changes and pattern changes before it went completely black. I pressed the power key and and couldn't believe it when that familiar white apple on the black screen popped up, just like nothing happened! Held my breath in disbelief until my screen with all my information and apps popped up,good as new!!! I can't believe it! Fricking genius! 😎 Thank you so much!

Read all the other replies, similar scenario, my daughter dropped on tile and we thought it was done!! My husband was looking up repair services as I was reading this post, so I tried and it didn't work :( . Then I asked him to try it and he was skeptical thinking we were going to make worst or break the screen. We'll I guess it takes a stronger tap than what I did cause it worked and I got to tell my husband, I told you so!!!! Thank you! I wouldn't mind sending a gift in return, I'm sure you saved us a ton of money!!!!

Well done to you and bosalo. Unfortunately, the rules do not allow gifts etc!

Cyndi516, my solution only works in those instances where the drop has not been too severe. It is similar to a loose battery connection in a TV remote control etc. Nevertheless, it has worked for 80 plus people. You could nearly read between the lines what you will now have to do now. Sorry!

Okay so I was excited to hear this had worked for so many people. I then started to wonder if this worked for iPhone 4s because everyone's iPad was working but this is not helping for my iphone. I wanted to ask if the phone had to be turned off, because the phone is on and you can hear the lock sound. Where exactly do I have to hit it, the only thing that happens to mine is that the blue lines start to change color. I would apreciate help.

My 6 year old came dancing into our bedroom this morning with my ipad, and "dropped" it in a perfect arc that took it halfway across the room. It took a good bit of whacking, and multiple hard resets (power and home button), but it finally turned back on. I found the winning combination to be a series of smacks around the edges, followed by a good one in the middle, but the effect could have been culmulative. Thank you, Alan!

My son dropped our iPad, in the Survivor Case, about two feet from the ground. It just slipped out of his hand while he was standing there talking to me. It went black, then blue. I did the smacking thing, maybe 3 or 4 times, and it didn't work at first. Then I got mad and really whacked it. It made the screen go from blue to black, then a discolorized and blurry version of my lock screen came up. I was thrilled with the progress. I gave it a few more whacks and BAM! We are back in business. Thank you so much for sharing something I wanted to do in the first place, but giving me an actual reason to do it.

A customer dropped this off and I told them I would fix it..well that was 2 months ago now they came knocking again and I was hunting for a solution where I did not have to physically try and open the device to fix. I am a tech guy as well and a bit skeptical of this "trick" if i didn't swear..this worked like a charm! Thanks for your wisdom! 😁

unbelievable, i can't say anymore than has already been said here over and over, best save of $250 ever!!! My boys, who caused the inconvenient failure of our so useful ipad are needless to say elated. We tried all the other stuff first to no avail, it was flashing once in awhile with the home and power button pushed and so we were able to enter the passcode and back it up so did a restore and while it was still restoring the backup, the screen being black the whole time, we decided to wack it on the back. We gave my son the honor and one wack totally fine, still in shock, how this is even possible is beyond me and I'm sure most everyone else. Thanks Alan
