My 6 year old came dancing into our bedroom this morning with my ipad, and "dropped" it in a perfect arc that took it halfway across the room. It took a good bit of whacking, and multiple hard resets (power and home button), but it finally turned back on. I found the winning combination to be a series of smacks around the edges, followed by a good one in the middle, but the effect could have been culmulative. Thank you, Alan!

My son dropped our iPad, in the Survivor Case, about two feet from the ground. It just slipped out of his hand while he was standing there talking to me. It went black, then blue. I did the smacking thing, maybe 3 or 4 times, and it didn't work at first. Then I got mad and really whacked it. It made the screen go from blue to black, then a discolorized and blurry version of my lock screen came up. I was thrilled with the progress. I gave it a few more whacks and BAM! We are back in business. Thank you so much for sharing something I wanted to do in the first place, but giving me an actual reason to do it.

A customer dropped this off and I told them I would fix it..well that was 2 months ago now they came knocking again and I was hunting for a solution where I did not have to physically try and open the device to fix. I am a tech guy as well and a bit skeptical of this "trick" if i didn't swear..this worked like a charm! Thanks for your wisdom! 😁

unbelievable, i can't say anymore than has already been said here over and over, best save of $250 ever!!! My boys, who caused the inconvenient failure of our so useful ipad are needless to say elated. We tried all the other stuff first to no avail, it was flashing once in awhile with the home and power button pushed and so we were able to enter the passcode and back it up so did a restore and while it was still restoring the backup, the screen being black the whole time, we decided to wack it on the back. We gave my son the honor and one wack totally fine, still in shock, how this is even possible is beyond me and I'm sure most everyone else. Thanks Alan

I thought this was the craziest thing I ever heard. I really thought it was a joke. I remember hitting the side of my dad's old TV to make it work but that had vacuum tubes in it. Well I gave it a try and hit the back of it about 10 times with the heel of my hand and pressed the home button, and it actually worked.

I sure hope I don't need to do this all the time like an old TV.

Thanks,

Scott

OMG this actually does work!

I thought this was a joke when I first read it, but by the 11th page of reading happy outcomes, I was convinced!

So I tried it: put the ipad face down on my lap (on a pillow in order to avoid damaging the glass), gave it four very firms whacks (my hand was smarting a bit) and... magic recovery!

Thank you so much, and especially to Alan!

Just want to keep this thread fresh. My wife's ipad 3gen stopped working yesterday. It will power on, but just an illuminated black screen for no reason. She told me tonight she was going to take it in to Apple Store in the am, but then she found these threads and couldn't believe the whack attack actually works. I said we had nothing to lose, so I placed it face down on he bed and gave 3 solid wackos on the back. Unreal! Guess who's ipad I'm typing this post on? Yep, 3 whacks and it's working just fine. Wonder why this works? Thanks!

I am so amazed! I dropped my ipad from about three feet onto hard tile, the screen was completely black, no sounds, nada. I was so depressed at the thought of having to pay apple a ton of money to fix it but then i stumbled across this forum. I am so glad I did. My ipad has been in this state for a week! I tried smaking the ipad on a cushioned surface face down, being scared that i could damage it further and then scree flashed! That gave me hope so I placed it on my knees and gave it one good smack, open palm, right over the black apple logo on the back. Turned it around pressed the lock screen button and viola it worked! Everything seems to be in working order! I am so happy!

Amazing!! My daughter dropped my ipad twice in 2 days, on the second drop it stopped working. I could tell that it was still "alive" as I could find it on find my ipad, but nothing happening on the screen. In despair took it to the local apple reseller, and he tells me I will need to send it back to apple and pay $300 to get a replacement. I read these posts, and laid it on my knee upside down and gave it a smack...nothing...a couple more and voila!!! It worked!!! Very relieved, will be taking extra special care of it though now 😉 Thank you so much!!!!!

I have been trying for days to get in touch with Apple and I can't seem to get anyone to respond. I did the same thing as everyone else. I have new iPad mini with retina and cellular and I dropped it. For me to go to the Apple Store is a 2 hr drive one way. Today I tried againto contact Apple and nothing. Anyway, I lookedagain in the discussion groups and found you. I want to thank you so much for your help. You wouldn't think something so simple would work. I remember one time my husband was having trouble with a sprinkler head and threw it in the woods. After a while and a cooling off period he went in the woods and retrieved it. IT WORKED. Not everything has to be complicated to work. Thank you again and God bless you. Have a great week.

I Just dropped my MacBook Pro. It slid off my bed and fell on its side. I opened it to see if it was okay, and it wasn't. The screen was black, but all the buttons worked, etc. After frantically searching the internet for ways to remedy this disaster, and actually scheduling an appointment with the Genius Bar, I found this thread and was so desperate, I thought maybe it'd work on my laptop even though it's not an ipad like everybody else. AND IT WORKED. Holy smokes! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! HOW DOES THIS WORK?! WHY DOES THIS WORK?! I'm amazed and so relieved and so happyyyyyy that I found this thread, because I was about to cry. I'm a performer who has a show in two days and was taking a break from some writing I had to do for this upcoming show. I would have been toast. Thank you thank you thank you.
