In /Applications, select the Pages icon. Then type command+eye to Get Info. What version of Pages do you have installed? What version of OS X preceded this upgrade?

Hi- Thanks for answering so quickly!
The version of Pages 4.2 was installed on OS 10.7.
After upgrading to 10.8.2, it will not launch
Couple of approaches.
In /Applications/Utilities, run Disk Utility on your boot disk. Under first aid, choose verify/fix permissions.
Now try to launch Pages v4.2 again.
If no success, it may be time to remove the Pages preferences.
Hi VikingOSX- Thanks again for staying with me on this!
The first approach didn't work, so went on to your second option.
I got to 2.2 and was unable to change "This Mac" "Library" to "Preferences"
I am able to open the Preferences file. Should I select ALL the preferences and move them to trash?
Wait. Found "Preferences" "By Host" and found 2 Pages prefs. Are these the ones to trash?
The preference to delete is in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences, the one to delete is com.apple.iwork.pages.plist file & then restart Pages. In Finder, hold down the Option key while clicking on the Go menu & your user Library will appear about halfway down the list. I doubt it would hurt to delete the "By Host" plists but they aren't the one in question.
In reference to my section 2 steps above, this included graphic is what that search retrieved for my machine. I had some iWork baggage from Lion, which explains all these Pages preference files in my example. My Pages works fine.
Peggy is right about the com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist file. Did that help you get Pages working?
Hi Peggy - Thanks for the insight and the excellent graphic! Unfortunately it didn't work for me. When I clicked to open Pages it just created a new Pages.plist and then refused to launch. I think I'm done... too frustrating.
Thanks again for the multiple responses! As you can see I'm still unable to open Pages. I've spent more time trying to fix this than it's worth. I'll probably trash everything Pages-related and buy another word processor.
Cheers!
There is another possibility...
If you purchased Pages '09 v4.2 from the App Store, you can re-install it.
If working well, move the previous copy of Pages to the Trash and empty it.
I know this has been frustrating. Hope this solves it.

Please elaborate on what exactly you mean by it "won't open".
Do you try to launch it and get an error message from the Finder (for example, something like "This application is damaged and cannot be launched....")? Does an icon for the application ever appear in the Dock when you try to launch it? Does it start to launch and then immediately crashes (Finder will display an "unexpectedly quit" dialog)? Or does it start to launch and never seems to "finish" launching (in other words, it basically hangs and is unresponsive)?
If the application crashes, please post the contents of the crash log here.
Otherwise, if the application seems to be hanging, can you, before attempting to launch it, open the Console.app application (it's in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder), and see if anything is reported when you attempt to launch it? If so, please post it here.
Hi Mark - Clicking the icon in the dock causes it to bounce, which it does for about 2 minutes. The application hangs and is listed as "not responding" in the force quit window. Here is the listing from Console.app that I believe applies:

Hi VikingOSX - I tried your solution, got to point 3.a and found that only the latest purchase (Mountain Lion) was listed with "download" ... all of the other purchases, including Pages still had "Installed". Clicking Pages in that list with the Option key down also did not change its status in the info page that came up.
Sorry... at this point I feel like I am waisting your time.
Mark, here are additional listings from Console.app in case I didn't include what you were looking for:11/4/12 1:51:11.167 PM mdworker[466]: Unable to talk to lsboxd

My Pages 4.2 program just started this the other day. Click it and it opens for a second and quits. I tried the same preference suggestion and got the same results you did. It still won't open. Greg
