My new IPad mini has poor wifi reception. Goes in and out. My IPod, IPhone, Ipad1 and Ipad2 work finer. I think it has wifi antenna issues. Does anyone else have this problem?

I changed my router out for an Apple AirPort Time Capsule and guess what, my iPad mini no longer has any issues with the wireless dropping off, although watching the WiFi signal strength icon it does seem to alternative between 50% and 100% every couple of seconds!

Clearly a sub-standard WiFi chip in the iPad mini and I guess my new AirPort router is blasting out stronger waves than my old router, which my ISP actually supplied with the service. For those wondering what my old router was, it's a BT HomeHub 2 device.

iPad wifi antenna issues

I bought a used like new iPad mini 3G few months back and traveled to Italy for business

I started having some connectivity problems but mostly was hotels networks related because it was on all the devices I had with me 2 iPhones, 1 samsung and a laptop

The iPad had the weakest reception.. I also bought a SIM card from Orange that they didn't activate during my 8 days stay in 3 different cities !! Anyway that add to my frustration. The real issues first happened at the airport few minutes before leaving

The iPad stopped connecting I thought it was a security thing..

Once home the problem persist so I started looking for answers from resetting the network to reset all settings then came the greyed out wifi icon in the control menu.

One weird proposition was to heat up the antenna than turn it off cool it down the restart it, weird as it might seem, it worked for a while!!

But it happened again as the guy said suggesting it's a combination of both hardware and software issue and his method was a temporary fix.

So each time it happened I went on and heated up the iPad on a heater after trying the suggested solutions mentioned on many forums including Apple's, as a last resort.

It toke couples of combinations of methods for a few time and it work gradually as a patient coming out of a comma!

Last week after I was stuck again but this time the iPad was not cooperating I stumbled on a step by step guide to dismantling and replacing the antenna,

To my surprise I discovered that I was heating the wrong side of the device and the Ipad antenna was at the bottom along side the Home button and not as the iPhone the guy was heating that I saw on you tube !! So I guess the heat was desipating thru the iPad till the antenna or it has nothing to do with fixing the issue.

Never the less it was frustrating to have to go through many connectivity problems,

From the device not detecting any network to detecting and not connecting and once asking for the password many times then going in connection loop and keeps dropping. So I heated it again this time on the correct side till I saw the temperature warning, cool it down then restart the process of trial and miss lately adding to the arsenal the airplane mode approached on and off in conjunction with wifi button on and off....

When I think I got a pattern or a succession of steps like resetting turning off the device, hard reset by pressing the home and start button together and so on.

To discover that it was not quite the cast.

It's like hit and miss with a grain of faith and pray!

Not to mention all the tricks with the router's settings and channels noise to reception coverage I've tried it all you name it...

My conclusion: it's most probably a hardware issue combined with a radio firmware bugs. My guess is there's some defective second grade antenna that passed the quality control phase and they're out in the market and the reputation of a big firm is not helping to admit and resolve the issue except for those lucky to still are under warranty coverage, the rest can just keep struggling as I'm doing and never give up.

Or just drop it and buy a different device.

Note: that's my first Apple device after being an "anti-Mac" for decades except for a old mini iPod back in 2007. Way to go Apple! You made my preconceptions concrete.
